School Report.

1898.

TO THE CITIZENS OF SPRINGFIELD:

Once more the time has come when we are called upon to make our annual report of the conditions of your schools for the past year. We trust the report will be satisfactory. Owing to the increase in the a- mount of money which you so kindly gave us last spring, we have been enabled to have three terms of school instead of two as heretofore. We have also en- deavored as far as possible to retain the same teachers throught the year or at least for two terms. Whenever practical it has always been the purpose of your present Board to avoid making a change of teachers from term to term, as we believe the standard of our schools can be much better maintained by adhering to this plan.

Having no scholars for a school in Fowler division this year. we have maintained schools in only five di- visions, with the exception of one pupil schooled in Enfield and two in Grafton. Conveyance was furnished Noyes children to Morgan Division and Budrow chil- dren and Colby child to Maxfield Division.

Your Board intended to have twenty-five weeks school in each division, with an extra week in Center and Maxfield divisions due them from last year. Hence the spring term was ten weeks in those two di- visions and nine in the others. We thought it advis-

33

able to have the fall schools commence the last week in August, hoping there would be no hard storms before we could have two terms of eight weeks each. It seems the scholars were not ready to enter school then or their parents were not ready to have them do so, as quite a number were not in school the first week; and a larger number were unable to go after snow came. The teachers in various divisions called our attention to several cases where pupils were obliged to be absent one day; we print their names and others who were absent only one day; also the names of those perfect in attend- ance after entering school. But again we would en- deaver to impress upon the minds of both parents and scholars that the Roll of Perfect Attendance includes the names of all who have been present every half day without being tardy.

As the teacher in Morgan division desired to teach ten weeks in the fall term, and as at the close of the term only four of the fourteen scholars enrolled were able to be present, we had only two terms in this division, knowing it would not be possible for the chil- dren to attend a winter school.

Without making a detailed statement of each school or teacher, we are of the opinion that, as a whole they have been much better than usual. Our many visits to the various schools have convinced us that good work was done and especially at the Center, where very thorough work was done through the year. In Maxfield division the Roll of Perfect Attendance for the spring term had nine names and five more had very few marks. Sanborn division however, comes in ahead again this year, both for perfect attendance and deport- ment. Improvement in studies follows as a matter of course, when parents, teacher and scholars are all inter- ested in making the school a success.

Thanks to the energy of the teachers, combined with the hearty co-operation of parents and scholars,

1

34

three new flags were placed on as many schoolhouses last summer, so that now the stars and stripes float over every occupied schoolhouse in town. Later in the year, the pupils in three divisions, aided by their teachers and parents, gave entertainments which were greatly enjoyed by those attending. As a result new curtains make three school rooms more attractive, and the pupils at the Center have a fine clock to aid them in their work, while the pleasant school room at Sanborn Hill is made doubly attractive by the addition of chairs for visitors.

In conclusion, let us say that we have endeavored to make such a judicious use of the money placed in our hands, that you will feel justified in giving your board an equal amount for the coming year.

Thanking you for courtesies received, we respect- fully submit the foregoing.

DAVID P. GOODHUE, School Board ELLA MCDANIEL, of

MINNIE T. CLARK, Springfield.
