circumstances of the student. Three years, however, will be re- garded as the full course. It is believed that this time, in a major- ity of cases, is quite short enough to meet the present academical requirements, and to lay a safe and thorough foundation for future progress.

The academical year commences with the Fall Term, when the Junior Class in this department is formed. The importance of commencing the course at this time, and pursuing it regularly without interruption, through the several classes, cannot be too deeply felt by those who aim at thoroughness and completeness in a classical education. Haste and irregularity, in most instances, result either in entire failure, or in loose and superficial habits.

Students can be received at any period in their preparatory course, provided they are prepared to enter either of the regular classes.

CANDIDATES for admission to this Department must be able to sustain an examination in the following studies, viz :- Orthogra- phy, the first principles of English Grammar, Colburn's First Les- sons, and Written Arithmetic through Vulgar Fractions.

extending through a period of three years. It is hoped that the ad- vantages of such an arrangement will be sufficiently obvious to all, who aim at a correct English education. Experience, it is believ- ed, has proved that one year's uninterrupted study is of more value to the student than twice that amount at widely separated inter- vals, by terms and half-terms. A systematic course, therefore, is both economy to the parent and of incalculable value to the pupil. Every attention, however, will be paid to those whom necessity compels to take a shorter course.

YOUNG LADIES will enjoy all the privileges of the Institution with regard to Library, Apparatus, Lectures, &c., and also the benefit of instruction in the Male Department in those studies which can be most successfully taught there. That course of in- struction will be pursued which will have direct reference to that which is solid and useful, giving strength and discipline to the mind, and cultivation and direction to the moral feelings and gen- eral character.

BOARDING HOUSE, &C

About forty young ladies can be accommodated in the Boarding House, where they will enjoy special social and domestic advanta- ges under the immediate care of their Teachers. Assisted by a general superintendent, the young ladies themselves perform the domestic labor of the house, thereby diminishing the expense of board, and in no degree retarding their progress in study. The whole expense of the house, exclusive of wood and lights, has not exceeded $1,25 per week.

Term Bills are one half required in advance. All bills, without exception, must be settled before young ladies leave at the close of the Term.

22

APPLICATION, &C.

Those who wish to enter the Boarding House, should make ap- plication at least four weeks before the commencement of the Term. In case of failure in any engagement, notice should sea- sonably be given.

Each young lady is requested to bring with her a table spoon. and tea spoon, towels for her own use, and bedding for her bed. Articles of clothing should be distinctly marked with the whole name. Young ladies should also be provided with suitable shoes, &c., for stormy weather.

NOTE. Those young ladies not connected with the Boarding House, and not under the immediate direction of their parents, are under the gen- eral direction of their teachers, in regard to their rooms, boarding-places, and any special rules of the school.

GENERAL REMARKS.

BENEFICIARY FOUNDATION.

From the funds of the Institution assistance is rendered to fif- teen or twenty young men, annually, who have the gospel minis- try in view, and are in indigent circumstances. Such have their tuition remitted and receive an appropriation of $1,00 per week during term time. Tuition is likewise remitted to such other young men as have the same object in view, and are assisted by other benevolent societies.

RELIGIOUS SERVICES.

The regulations of the school require every student to attend public worship on the Sabbath, at such place as parents and guardians may designate, and when no such designation is made, at the place where the teachers usually attend. They are also re- quired to attend the stated morning and evening devotions in the chapel, and a Biblical exercise on the Sabbath, under the direction of the teachers.

The great object which the Instructors design to keep contin- ually in view, will be to develope the intellectual and moral charac- ter-to discipline and call into action the mental faculties-while at the same time they inculcate the great principles of morality and religion. The guardians of the Institution wish it to be distinctly remembered, that no young person whose habits and influence are of an immoral tendency will be permitted to remain in the school ; as considerations of an individual nature must always be sacrificed for the general good.

EXAMINATIONS, &c.

There are public examinations of all the classes in the several Departments, at the close of the Fall and Spring Terms, before the Trustees, or a Committee, chosen at their direction. Parents, guar- dians, and all others interested, are respectfully invited to attend.

24

On the evening of the day of the Annual Meeting, there is an exhibition in Elocution by the First Class. At this Meeting, like- wise, Essays in English and Latin Composition are exhibited by the same class.

TEACHERS' CLASS.

There will be familiar Lectures given on methods of teaching, the management and government of schools, and the responsibility of the Teacher's office.

NOTICE.

In making application, in respect either to the Male or Female Departments, Parents and guardians are requested to be particular in stating the age, general character, and private habits of the can- didates for admission, and the time they are expected to remain in school.
