FOREWORD

HE late Henry H. Metcalf published in 1919 the first volume of New Hampshire Notables which has since become a valuable reference book in newspaper offices, libraries and elsewhere. In the foreword to his edition Mr. Metcalf expressed the hope: "that some one else may be sufficiently interested, in the not distant future, to continue the enterprise, and prepare and publish another volume along the same line."

1981124

The publishers of the present volume have tried to follow as closely as possible the ideas of the original com- piler. We have spent a year collecting the biographical sketches and pictures of the New Hampshire men and women included in this book and we hope it will be found as valuable as the previous edition. This volume is not in any sense a Who's Who in New Hampshire. There are probably many more men and women, either natives of New Hampshire or present residents of New Hamp- shire, who are equally worthy of recognition.

The design has been to include only living subjects, and this purpose has been departed from in only two or three exceptional cases. Nevertheless quite a number of those whose sketches are presented have died since they were arranged for and printed, the fact of death in each case so far as known being noted in the "Addenda" along with material facts, developing in regard to other subjects since their sketches were put in type, and the noting of certain errors which have been detected in some cases, while doubtless others have been overlooked. It is prac- tically impossible to avoid mistakes, typographical and otherwise, in a work of this kind; but it is hoped that this volume is as free therefrom as is usually the case.

$ 0.50 Tuttle Jan 12-1978 PO 8656

The abbreviations used are simple and readily under- stood, such as "b" for born, "m" for married, "s" for son, "dau" for daughter, "ed" for education, and the custom- ary abbreviations for names of states, orders, organiza- tions, societies, etc. It has not appeared necessary to insert a table of abbreviations.

The printing of the volume having been commenced as soon as material came to hand and was properly pre- pared, the sketches are necessarily not arranged in alpha- betical order. To have done that would have involved delay until the last sketch was procured before printing was commenced, and a consequent delay of many months more before the appearance of the work. Reference to the alphabetical index which has been prepared will enable one to find any particular sketch readily and without in- convenience.

New Hampshire men and women have always been active and prominent not only at home but in all parts of the country and you will find included in this volume sev- eral nationally known men and women with definite New Hampshire connections.

This volume is entirely a New Hampshire product, all the work. both editorial and mechanical, having been done by residents of the State of New Hampshire.
