CHICAGO HISTORICAL SOCIETY
INTRODUCTION.
In the preparation of The Ministry and Churches of New Hampshire, this chronological list of the pastorates was drawn up for my own use, and with no view to publication. It is now granted to the courteous re- quest of the General Association for the press, in the hope that it may be found useful.
It is simply a list, in the order of time, of the beginnings and endings of the pastorates. It does not distinguish ordination from installation, but, by the insertion of an asterisk [*], it does mark the cases in which pastors died in office. The beginnings of successive pastorates are num- bered in order, by the regular series of figures in the left hand cohnnu ; and the endings of the pastorates, whether by death or dismission, are similarly numbered in the right hand column. The difference in these Algures gives, therefore, the number of pastorates existing at any given time. Thus, at the end of the year 1800, 290 pastors had been settled, and 182 had died or been dismissed, leaving 168 in service. There is, also, in the same columns, an irregular series of numbers in parentheses (+) which refer backward in the first column and forward in the last, to the other term of the given pastorate. An example will illustrate the simplic- ity and convenience of this arrangement. Laban Ainsworth was ordained 1783, Dec. 10-the 202nd pastor. The number (752) at the end of the line shows that he was the 752nd in the ending of his long pastorate. Turn to this number in the final column, and it gives the date of his death --- 1858, Nov. 17. The reverse reference, from his death to his settlement, is as direct by the (202) in the first column.
For other details we refer to the volume already mentioned. In that work the different ministers in each town are given, acting pastors included, with ordinations, installations, dismissions, and the vital facts of the birth, education and death of each minister, the organization of churches, &c. In this list the name of the town, only, is given, and it should be noted that Franconia is always to be supplied with Bethlehem, and Hebron with Groton; that Meriden is in Plainfield, Fisherville (the church) in Boscawen, Great Falls in Somersworth, and Salmon Falls in Rollinsford.
As this Appendix is likely to fall widely into the same hands, and inter- est the same circle of inquirers, as The Ministry and Churches of New Hampshire, it seems appropriate to add, at the end, a list of such further errata as have been found, and are not corrected, on the final page of that work [or Congregational Quarterly, 1876,'p. 600]. On that page I make an exception in favor of "original sources" of information, as trustworthy. But two of the birth dates, here corrected, were furnished me by the gentlemen concerned, and the same is true of several other items.
