As eras of prosperity and depression have followed one another in the history of the American people, so Colby has had its ups and downs of fortune. As New London Academy it blazed forth in the educational sky in 1837, as a meteor flashes into brilliancy in the darkness and

almost as quickly vanishes from sight. Appearing once more in 1853 under its new designation as the New London Literary and Scientific Institution, it attracted numerous students from the outset but threatened to languish until the large brick building was erected on the hill. With that event and the benefactions of the 'seventies it prospered and in 1878 was rebaptized as Colby Academy, only to fall into a serious decline in the 'nineties under the combined influence of fire and fate- ful finance. Again it was raised from the depth of de- pression with the new century, broadening its activities and strengthening its resources, only to be caught again in the perplexities of the period over the wisest policy for enrollment of students. It was a hard decision for the trustees to make to shut the boys out of Colby. They had carried Colby to victory on the platform of debate and in athletic competitions. They had brought honor to the old school in business and the professions. But it is a law of nature that sacrifice is the nurse of progress. And so in 1928 the academy became a school for girls only and presently emerged as a full-blown junior col- lege. Under the wise administration of President Sawyer the curve of prosperity has risen sharply on the graph of the years. In material equipment the institution was never before so fortunate. The disheartening poverty that dogged the academy and clogged the wheels of progress for ninety years has been banished.
It is midnight on the rocky summit of Kearsarge. The old year of 1936 is dying, and the New Year is waking in its cradle. The moon rides just past the full in a cloud- less sky. By its light the watcher can discern the piles of brick that mark the college on New London hill nine miles away. Once more it is a time for memories, for ghosts to walk and spirits of the past flit by. But it is a time for the future as well as the past, for the promise of a second century for old Colby that will outshine the

first, and for a world that will mellow and sweeten, let us hope, as it learns the way of mutual service and sacri- fice and faithful endeavor as Colby boys and girls have been learning it on New London hill. Hail and farewell! Long live Colby, Academy and College!
COLBY
LURA M. DEAN, '97
Many eyes have looked upon it, Many feet have crossed its threshold, Many minds have struggled bravely With its mysteries and its problems. Many youth have trod its pathways With uncertain, eager longings, Looking forward, looking backward, Sighing o'er the fleeting present; And their hopes and aspirations Have grown brighter as they journeyed, Till they bore away the laurels In the world's broad field of battle. Many storms have beat upon it, Fire and flood have raged against it, Yet it stands as firm as ever, With a truer, nobler aspect; Stands to be a grand reminder That our strength is in our union,
That the right and truth must conquer Till their foes are crushed forever. Many hearts have thrilled with pleasure O'er its progress and advancement, Many prayers are still ascending To the throne of the Eternal - Prayers of earnest, fond entreaty, Prayers that rise from deep affection - That a grand and glorious future, Full of peace and sweet contentment, Full of influence, pure and Godlike, May be held in store for Colby.
