REPORT OF THE SCHOOL BOARD

OF THE

Town School District of Northfield

In submitting our annual report to the district, we will say as a whole we think that our schools have been a success.

For the past year we have been fortunate in being able to re- tain the services of four teachers who have taught in our schools before, and are sorry that we cannot retain them longer. If the district would vote to raise us a little more money so that we could pay our teachers seven dollars per week, we should have no trouble in securing the services of first class teachers. There is one thing that we wish to mention ; when the school board are unfortunate in having a teacher who is not as good a disciplina- rian as could be wished, for the parents not to hint such to the scholars.

We have classed the Tebbetts school with the. Rand school for the past year, for the small sum of $1.50 per week for trans- portation. We think that this gives more interest to the scholars and less expense to the treasury.

We had to bring the fall term of school in the Hodgdon dis- trict to a sudden close for good and sufficient reasons, which leaves extra money in the treasury to be schooled out in that district this year.

In the past year several of our scholars have gone to the graded schools at Belmont and the Union District. This shows that they desire more schooling than we can give them.

We shall need some text books this year and we hope that the district will be generous with us and vote to raise what we need.

It gives us pleasure to note that the attendance is equal to

32

that of last year, and we hope to improve more the coming year.

We wish to thank you all who have in any way assisted our teachers and pupils, and your interest that you have manifest- ed by the visits to our schools.

CHAS. L. BARNARD, LILLIAN E. MOORHOUSE, OTIS C. WYATT,

Board of Education.

ANNUAL REPORT OF THE BOARD OF EDUCATION

Of Union School District No. 1, in Tilton.

The board of education of Union School District respectfully submit the following report :

Our schools have made good progress during the past year. We have aimed for steady, sure advancement rather than showy work.

The attendance and punctuality have been better this year than ever before.

Our principal has been doing some supervisory work in the schools by having an assistant a part of a day each week. We are now contemplating plans whereby this work can be done more systematically and our principal have more time for this work. This can easily be done by procuring an assistant for our principal's room for one day in each week and thus giving him time to look after the work in the other grades. Thereby we shall receive as much benefit with less expense as we should if we united with other towns in hiring a superintendent.

The present day methods of training children in the public schools have called forth from parents much comment and crit- icism, partly on account of so called "fads" and partly because of the new ways of teaching old things.

In the days before the kindergarten had taken its place in public schools, children were plunged with no preparation whatever into first readers and primers. The training of the child which begins in the kindergarten is invaluable.

42

When the little one is advanced, his mind is in that recep- tive condition which accepts readily the more serious grade work.

Our primary grade is much to large for one teacher as the children are allowed to enter so very young. The most of them are too young for first grade or primary work, thus the teacher has to divide her time between primary and kindergarten work.

Much better results will be secured when the two are separat- ed.

We can look upon our fire escape with much pleasure and satisfaction. It has cost more than was at first estimated, but we thought it advisable as we were to have one, to have it right in every respect, and we hope the district will be well satisfied.

The number of different pupils enrolled two weeks or more during the year is as follows :
