We, the undersigned Auditors for the town of Enfield school board, have examined the account of the Treasurer for the year ending Feb. 15. 1897, which we find to be correct and properly vouched and submit the above report.

FRANK T. CURRIER. ) Auditors.

L. N. SARGENT,

School Report

. . OF THE . .

TOWN DISTRICT.

The treasurer's report shows the cost of our school, num- ber of weeks, and by whom taught. We give the number of scholars in each school and the names of pupils who have at- tended a full term without an absence. Lottie Bucklin has the highest honor on the roll, not a . mark for three terms. Sadie Russell leads in perfect recitations, only five answers missed in two terms of five studies each term. A set of charts and works of reference have been purchased supplying a much needed want. As the Center school is well graded we suggest that the school board at the opening of the next school year present a course of study that will meet the wants of the pupils ; make the text-books uniform in this, and all schools and thus remove many mixed studies. Some of our school houses need repairing; it will be necessary to raise funds for that purpose.

Center.

No. scholars registered :- Grammar school, 20; Primary, 21. On the roll of perfect attendance, Lena M. Banks, Ida M. Colburn, Myrtle C. Fisher, Nina C. Kidder, Dora A. Lawn, Daisie E. Lawn, Charlie A. Banks, Ralph Follansbee, Harlie V. Howard, Walter C. Morse, Offie C. Perley, Ernest O. Bailey, Jennie Quimby, Arthur Lawn.

East Hill.

No. of scholars, 11. Perfect attendance, Mary Bucklin, Blanche Stevens. Ernest Akerman, Lottie Bucklin, Lewis Cochran, Flora Bucklin, Miner Cochran, Eva Akerman, Oli- ver Brown.

Montcalm.

We have not the register ; we found at each of our visits to the school 10 scholars.

Remarks.

Another school year has added its record to the history of the past and though the record of the schools of Enfield for 1896 may be laid away and in time forgotton, the influence the schools have had upon the town and those who have been

39

taught, will be felt through time and the commencement of time is but the beginning of eternity. In supporting our school every citizen desires that our schools shall add to the intellectual worth of our town, and every one feels a personal pride that Enfield is so well equipped in educational facilities. Some of our schools have been very well taught, some of our teachers among those of the best. We make no individual re- port of what the work in each school has been as we could only speak of them briefly and would in no way add or detract from the merits of teacher or pupil. Every one represented in our schools knows, or should know the value of them, whether good or bad. We suggest to teachers who have fail- ed to make their school what an ideal school should be and have felt inadequate to the duties of the school-room, deter- mine to be no longer a failure, but resolve that every day's la- bor shall be more effective than the last one ; that every term's experience shall make the next a higher success ; that every successive class taught in any given branch, shall be better managed, more effectively drilled, more deeply and thoroughly roused to an earnest and cheerful activity, than any preceed- ing one. He who rises through difficulties to an eminent pos- ition is stronger in that position than he who is born to it. To parents we say if you are to pass judgement upon teachers, schools and school management, do it without prejudice or malice ; never be indifferent to the educational interest of your children ; remember that much devolves upon you in fitting the child to do life's work well. To the children of our schools we say to you that ere long will be entrusted to your care the management of our schools also the affairs of state and nation ; qualify yourselves for the high and noble duties that await you.

There is a grand and lofty destiny to be achieved, labor for it ; and now while in the vigor of youth is the time to for- tify yourselves for the emergencies that await you, may you improve your opportunities in a way that you may become a bright and shining light in whatever place you occupy is the wish of
