GILMANTON TOWN REPORT
Report of School Board.
To the citizens of the School District of Gilmanton we herewith submit our annual report.
The advancement made by our schools during the past year has been quite satisfactory. Not all that we could wish in some localities, but taken as a whole the noble work of educating the children has been pushed with vigor intelligence and determination.
Whole number of schools supported during the past year has been eleven. Number of scholars enrolled 177. Refer- ence to our statistical table will give information relative to teachers, length of terms, salaries etc.
The board have not made any very extensive repairs on buildings the past year but have had an eye upon the pro- perty and made minor repairs in several cases. A sub stantial flag pole has been erected on the Iron Works school grounds at quite an expense. New blackboards have been installed in some of the Lower Gilmanton schools and the Allens' Mills school has received two coats of paint outside, which with other repairs make the old school house look quite attractive.
There are very many important subjects which we might call your attention to at this time in relation to our schools but we eliminate all and come to this most vital matter, namely :- the constant attendance of our children at school reference to your file of town reports will remind you that this matter has been carefully and earnestly directed to the parents attention.
Our average attendance for the past year has been far too low and looks as if this feature of our school work is being overlooked by the parents in this district. No school can be run with any degree of success unless the rules of punctuality and every day attendance are strictly observed.
The influence of children coming into school late or not
42
GILMANTON TOWN REPORT
at all for the day cannot be estimated. We must put this easy-going-slip-shod method of attending school out of existence, no man succeeds in the business or professional world unless he first learns to be punctual and regular.
Our money, the efforts of the teacher and most deplor- able of all, the school time of the children, price-less boon, are all wasted if these laws are set aside.
Our last legislature enacted a law requiring the state to furnish financial aid to districts of small valuation and large territories but the amount of this help depends upon the average attendence of the pupils.
We urgently appeal to parents and people of our good town to assist us in obliterating tardiness and abscences from our registers.
The board is still handicapped by the fact that in all towns about us teachers are receiving much larger salaries than we are able to offer. It looks as if this district would have to increase its salaries or make the "other fellow" pay less, otherwise our very able corps of teachers is in danger of being depleted.
Before closing these remarks we wish to express our ap- preciation of the faithful work performed by our teachers during the past year and also to thank the parents and good people of our town for their encouragement and kind words which have helped us beyond measure in making our school year a success.
With high hopes for the coming year, we solicit the aid of all the people of our town in helping to make 1910 the best school year in Gilmanton's history,
ALICE A. MORGAN, School Board
FRANK N. MERRILL, of
STEPHEN L. WEEKS, Gilmanton.
