Report of Fire Engineers

The Board of Fire Engineers submit the following report for the year ending January 31, 1921 :

APPARATUS

Souhegan Hose wagon, Eagle Hose wagon, Pine Valley Hose wagon, Motor Pumping Engine, Neptune Fire Engine and Hose reel, all equipped and in good condition.

HOSE ON HAND

3600 ft. 21/2 inch, 200 ft. 11/2 inch, in good condition.

The committee appointed to purchase the new motor fire truck purchased a triple combination fire engine (pump, chemical and hose) of the American La France Fire Engine Co. It was accepted by the town after of- ficial tests and was placed in commission and has prov- ed to be a valuable addition to the department.

We would recommend the appropriation of $3200.00 for usual expenses of the Department.

Shepard Park Commission

To the honorable board of Selectmen of Milford :

In submitting our annual report for the year 1920 we wish to state our effort has been mainly the care and maintenance of the town's property rather than making additions to same. The small amount of money which we have expended during the year bears little relation to the amount accomplished, as a very large part of the work has been done by voluntary labor. on the part of those interested in improving the park.

We wish especially to acknowledge the services of Mr. Henry Snow in lowering and raising the flag pole to make needed repairs. The small amount of apparatus on the children's playground will be in need of painting and other small repairs before the opening of the season. Also it will be necessary to replace some trees that were damaged by the severe winter of 1919-1920.

We recommend that the part of the park bordering on Nashua Street, which is at present seeded down, should be plowed, fertilized and again seeded in the near future. This needs to be done to improve the looks of the park at this time and before the trees attain a greater size.

We would respectfully request the same appropria- tion as last year, the sum of $50.

P. R. WOODMAN, THOMAS F. O'NEIL, JOHN F. PIROVANO, Clerk, Shepard Park Commission.

Report of Water Commissioners

To the Honorable Board of Water Commissioners : Gentlemen :

The activities of the water department have been confined largely to re-setting the main gates, many of which could not be closed. We have repaired six goose-necks and have had two hydrants broken by automobiles. We have had an experimental filter in operation throughout the year, which has proved high- ly satisfactory in removing the disagreeable elements in the water.

In July our No. 2 boiler, which is the older of the two, was condenmned by the Insurance company as unfit for service, making it necessary, if we continued our steam plant, to purchase a new boiler.

We had previously decided to install an electric pump, which was put in operation in January. Judging from the fifteen days which it was operated, we can run by electricity for much less than the present cost of coal. This pump also shows by the amount of water pumped that the steam pumps are much worn and are not pumping by 20,000 gallons per day what the indi- cators register.

We have had urgent requests to extend the mains on Oak street, Smith street, and East Union street, but owing to the high price of pipe we could not see our way clear.

The fact that our boiler has been condemned and the pumps nearly worn out goes to show the general conditions with which we have had to contend during the last three years.

Respectfully submitted, ROBERT F. CAMPBELL, Superintendent.
