It is said by Mrs. Smith that he was engaged in burning a pile of logs, and they rolled, falling upon him and pinning him to the ground. He shouted for help and his wife attempted to assist him but to no avail. A townmeeting was being held and all the men in the neigh- borhood were away so that ;no assistance could be summoned, and she was compelled to see her husband burn to death. Benjamin Sumner came to Claremont about 1767; was selectman in 1760, town clerk, and a large owner as proprietor of rights in the town and rep- resentative to the legislature in 1784-85-93-94. He was not an ardent sup- porter of the American cause during the Revolution, which doubtless had much to do with his not having attained more important positions, as he was a man of marked ability and qualified to serve. Thomas. "O Senes Memento Mortis. Sacred to the memory of Zara and Orlando Thomas, sons of Zara and Elizabeth Thomas. They were killed with lightning July 8. 1805. Zara in his 18th year, Orlando in his 7th year."
The two boys were standing in an open doorway during a hard thunder shower. Directly over their heads hung an old musket. This is supposed to have attracted the lightning. A number of other people were in the room at the time, and all were stunned. The lightning played curious pranks with the furniture ; a single long sliver was taken by it out of a hard wood table, doing it no other damage. The house where this occurred stood in what was called "Punkshire." near the old Grannis homestead, in West Claremont.

MORTUARY STATISTICS.
No records of deaths were kept in town, except by families, prior to 1846. The compiler has, therefore, arranged by years the deaths as recorded by the inscriptions. While it is certain that these do not icnlude all the deaths of each year, it in some measure shows the death rate. From 1846 to date a careful record has been kept, the credit for it being duc Mr. Alfred Burrill, for many years sexton of the town, and its continuance byghis son, Mr. George II. Burrill, his successor as sexton.

The ways of Death are soothing and serene. .And all the words of Death are grave and sweet. From camp and church. the fireside and the street, She beckons forth-and strife and song have been.
.1 summer night descending cool and green. And dark on daytime's dust and stress and heat. The ways of Death are soothing and serene. .And all the words of Death are grave and sweet. O glad and sorrowful, with triumphant mien And radiant faces look upon and greet This last of all your lovers, and to mect Her kiss, the Comforter's, your spirit lean. ... The ways of Death are soothing and serene. -W. E. Heutey.
