In the deed conveying this land he is spoken of as "Samuel Worthen of New Chester, blacksmith." He served in the Continental army. Samuel Worthen m. about 1782, Hannah Ingalls, b. 1759. She was distinguished for her great piety. She was one of the seven who composed the first Methodist class in Bristol, organized in 1801, and it was at her house that it had its weekly meetings for seven years. Years later, after listening to sermons by her two sons in the first Methodist chapel, she arose and testified, as was then the custom, and she then said that she had consecrated her children to the Lord before they were born.
