HISTORY OF DURHAM
BURNHAM
Robert Burnham, born about 1614, probably at Norwich, Eng., son of Robert and Mary (Andrews) Burnham, came over in the Angel Gabriel, which was wrecked off Pemaquid, Me., 15 Aug. 1635. He was at Ipswich, Mass., in 1636, in Boston, 1644, and at Osyter River in 1654. Carpenter by trade. He married, about 1646, Frances She was not daughter of Valentine Hill, as many have guessed. Two hundred acres, which had been granted to Ambrose Gibbons in 1654 and were willed by him to his son-in-law, Henry Sherburne, were sold by Sherburne to Robert Burnham and were laid out to the latter, 9 Nov. 1661, on the south side of Oyster River, a mile or more below the Falls. Here on a hilltop may be seen the cellar of his garrison house, beautiful for situation and successfully defended against the attack of the Indians in 1694. Robert Burnham died at Ipswich, where a brother lived, 12 June 1691. His will, made the day previous to his death, names only his wife, Frances, and sons, Samuel and Jeremiah. Children were:
ROBERT b. 25 July 1647; d. 25 Feb. 1663.
2. SAMUEL b. 1649; m. ELIZABETH b. 27: 8: 1651; m. John Davis, Jr.

ROBERT b. 21 : 2: 1664; prob. d. young.
2. Samuel Burnham (Robert) born 1649, died before 1720' leaving at least three children. The name of his wife is unknown. [See N. H. Prov. Deeds, XI, 358 and XIII, 253.]
MARY m. John Allen before 1720.
4. JAMES m. (I) Temperance Harrison, (2) Mary Hill. FRANCES m. John Bartlett of Amesbury, Mass.
3. Jeremiah Burnham (Robert), born 1653, married Tem- perance Bickford, daughter of John and Temperance of Oyster River Point. There seems to be no evidence for the statement sometimes made, that he married Catherine Sherburne. No such person appears in the Sherburne Genealogy. He married (2) Mary, widow of John Spinney and daughter of John Dia- mond of Kittery. In her will, 1733, she names a son, Jeremiah Burnham. [See Maine wills.] Jeremiah Burnham is called ser-

4. James Burnham (Samuel2, Robert1) and Temperance, his wife, sold to John Downing, 8 July 1713, land at Fox Point, Newington, which Nicholas Harrison bequeathed to his daugh- ter, Temperance Harrison. [See N. H. Prov. Deeds, XVI, 454.] James, son of Samuel Burnham, sold to Joseph Meader, Jr., 17 May 1714, land granted to Robert Burnham, grandfather to said James. [See N. H. Prov. Deeds, XII, 468.] James Burn- ham sold to Samuel Smith, 24 April 1718, eighteen acres which were sold by John Miles to Samuel Burnham, except one and a half acres sold to Hugh Adams. James and Mary Burnham sold to Jonathan Crosby, 22 Oct. 1718, land and buildings south of Oyster River, which had been sold by John Miles to Samuel Burnham. James Burnham is named in the will of Nathaniel Hill as his son-in-law, with grandchildren, Samuel, Nathaniel, Joshua and James. It appears, then, that James Burnham mar- ried (1) Temperance, daughter of Nicholas and Mary (Bickford) Harrison of Newington, and (2), about 1718, Mary, daughter of Capt. Nathaniel and Sarah (Nutter) Hill, who died before 1741. She was, probably, bapt. 22 Aug. 1726.

BUSS
The Rev. John Buss, born 1640, probably son of William and Ann Buss of Concord, Mass., came to Oyster River from Wells, Me., where he had been minister and physician some years and where he was received as freeman, 7 July 1674, according to records of York County. He is supposed to have married (I) 12 May 1673, in Salisbury, Mass., Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Bradbury. ¿ It is certain that he married (2) Mary, daughter of Valentine Hill, whom he called, in 1718, his "late wife." At that time he had wife, Elizabeth, his third wife. He stated in a petition, 1718, that he had been laboring at Oyster River forty years and was then seventy-eight years old. His house was burned in the massacre of 1694. He died in March 1736, having been very poor in his old age. Pike's Journal says that Joseph Buss and William Buss were killed by Indians at Cochecho, 28 June 1689. Perhaps they were brothers of the Rev. John Buss. His widow was aided by the town till her death in 1768, and then the town paid her funeral expenses. '
On 22 .Aug. 1721, a suit was brought by Joseph Buss, Sr., of Portsmouth against Nathaniel Hill, Valentine Hill, Samuel Hill and David Kincaid, for trespass. The following statement is found among the papers preserved in the Court Files at Concord, N. H., No. 15139.
After the decease of Valentine Hill "the premises descended and came to his surviving children, which were Sam11 Hill his eldest son, Nath11 Hill, Mary Hill and Hannah Hill, which Mary Hill was afterward Buss and entitled to one fifth part of aforesd five hundred acres after sd ffathers decease.
