4. It will be the especial duty of the standing com- mittee to examine and recommend to the church all candidates for admission ; to take in charge the pre- liminary steps of discipline ; to act, when desired, as. counsellors and assistants of the pastor in the work and care of the church and parish ; to attend to all benevo- lent contributions, and to decide when, and how, and for what objects contributions shall be taken in the church ; and to labor with the pastor for the peace, purity, and prosperity of the church.
5. Examinations of candidates for admission into the church shall be, except in cases of sickness or infirmity, at some regular meeting of the church. Persons ad- mitted on confession of faith shall be propounded not less than two weeks before communion, except when otherwise voted by the church. Persons admitted by letter can be admitted by vote of the church at any time, and without being propounded.
6. Members of this church are expected to conform to all the rules of the church regularly adopted ; they
19
are expected to maintain the worship of God in their families ; to share, according to their ability, in sup- porting the preaching of the Gospel, and the ordin- ances of religion ; and are required to abstain from the use of all intoxicating liquors as a beverage.
7. Members of this church shall be considered in good and regular standing, unless written charges shall be preferred against them, or they have been guilty of open, gross, and heinous offences, or unless otherwise provided in these rules.
8. Members of other Evangelical churches, residing in our midst, may be admitted to communion with this church for one year only, unless they connect themselves with the church : provided, always, that there is no reasonable cause why they should not so join with us.
9. Members of this church, removing permanently to another town, are expected to remove their church rela- tion by letter within two years from their change of residence. If longer delayed, this church cannot vouch for their Christian standing, and can give no letter of dismission and recommendation, unless their good and regular standing is proven or known. Members thus removing their residence, who, without a reasonable cause, neglect to take a letter from this church within five years, shall be considered as guilty of neglect of duty, and their names may be dropped from the rolls by vote of the church.
10. All absent members of this church are requested to report themselves to the clerk of this church at least once in each year. Members, unheard of for twenty years or more, may be presumed to be dead, and their names may be dropped from the roll.
II. This church regards the following as offences subject to censure, as unchristian conduct, or as of-
20
fences making admonition, and maybe discipline, nec- essary,-to wit, dishonesty, Sabbath-breaking, intem_ perance, immorality, profane swearing, lying, un- christian spirit, breach of covenant obligations, ab- sence from the communion for more than one year without reasonable cause, neglect to support the preach- ing of the Gospel, as well as the wilful violation of any rule of this church regularly established. Members of the church are expected to maintain a daily life in ac- cordance with the teachings of Christ.
12. The annual meeting of this church shall be on the first Thursday in April of each year, for the choice of officers and for the transaction of appropriate busi- ness. Reports are expected at the annual meeting, from the treasurer, of receipts and disbursements, and from the standing committee, on the condition of the church.
13. All members of this church shall be entitled to vote on all matters before the church for action.
14. These rules shall take effect, to govern the action of the church and its members, from and after their publication.
