HISTORY OF THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH.

1435260

A Brief History.

The corner stone of this Church was laid June 19th, 1831, a little less than 59 years ago, by Hon. Charles Borland. The sermon on that eventful occasion was delivered by Rev. Ezra Fisk, D. D., of Goshen, accompanied by other appropriate services.

On the 27th day of August, 1832, the congre- gation of this church made up largely from the Goodwill and Reformed Churches, voted to invite Rev. James O. Stokes to become their pastor. This gentleman being of English extrac- tion and not having satisfactory credentials, and withal, holding views at variance with the doc- trines of the Church, the Presbytery refused to install him and he concluded his ministry as a supply, in about one year.

On the 2d of October, 1832, a Committee of the Presbytery of Hudson proceeded to organize this Church. It consisted of thirty persons, viz: Cyrus Lyon, John Kelley, Walter Mead, Samuel T. Scott, Isabella B. Scott, John Boak, Jr., Joshua &Conger, Benjamin VanKeuren, Elizabeth Van- Keuren, Eve Miller, Isabella H. Borland, Mary Preston, Rhoda Neafie, Margaret Gridley, Matilda

HISTORY OF THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH.

C. Hill, Rachel Chandler, Jemima Parshall, Hiram E. Conger, Sally Ann Conger, Sarah Pelton, Sarah Mc Neil, Emily Weller, Ann E M. Neal, Samuel Bookstaver, John Peache, William Hays, Esther Hunter, Jane Lawson, Elizabeth Eager and Stephen Gillespie. Of these thirty founders, all

are now dead. On the day of the organization, after the sermon by Rev. C. Cummins, D. D., the above named thirty persons, presented their cer- tifirates of good standing in and dismissal from their respective Churches, and were in due form constituted a Church of Jesus Christ, under the name of the First Presbyterian Church, of the village of Montgomery, N. Y.

The following persons were elected ruling elders on that occasion: Cyrus Lyon, Walter Mead, Samuel T. Scott, John Kelley, John Boak, Jr. The last three named being then and there ordained, the others having held similar offices in other Churches.

The Church and congregation were addressed on the occasion by the Rev. W. Timlow, the newly elected elders by Rev. Daniel T. Wood.

In March, 1834, Rev. Sheridan Gittean was elected pastor and was soon after installed. During his ministry of about fifteen months, a revival of very considerable power occurred in this village and adjacent community. Twenty-seven persons, chiefly adults and heads of families united with

the Church, making at this date, viz, 1834-35, the total membership, 101 persons.

Rev. Mr. Gitteau resigned his charge, June 9th, 1835, and was succeeded by Rev. Benjamin B. Stockton who was installed July 28th of the same year. This gentleman continued the pastor until April, 1838, when he resigned. During his ministry eighteen were received by letter and thirteen by profession of faith.

April 26, 1838, Rev. E. R. Fairchild was unanimously chosen pastor. He was installed, June 26, 1838. His pastorate was brief. Attracted by the alluring call to the Secretaryship of the Home Missionary Society at Philadelphia, and disappointed because the congregation had no parsonage, he offered his resignation, and was dis- missed by the Presbytery, October 3d, 1839. Eight persons were received into the Church by letter and eleven by profession during his ministry.

On the 14th day of December, 1839, the Rev. Robert G. Armstrong, of Fishkill, N. Y., was unanimously elected pastor and was installed Feb- ruary 5th, 1840, and dismissed-April 21, 1841.

The Rev. W. W. Newell, late of Boston, Mass., was called to this Church, November 21st, 1841, and installed February 2d, 1842. During his ministry a season of revival took place and in 1842, at the May Communion, 102 persons united with the Church.

6

HISTORY OF THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH.

The Church record shows that the total num- ber received into this Church during Mr. Newell's ministry to be 165. The whole membership of the Church at this period being 238.

Messrs. H E Conger, Abram Vail and Theo- dore L Jackson were admitted to the eldership of this Church during the period just referred to.

The parsonage so much needed during the past years of the Church's history was built during the ministry of Rev. Mr. Newell. which covered a period of five years and eight months.

In April, 1848, the people with one voice invited the Rev. Dr. Fairchild to take the pastor- ate of this Church again. The nanimity of the people, together with the parsonage, induced in part, at least, Mr. F. to consent to become the steady supply, this, coupled with the fact that the Church should free itself from debt, which amounted at this time, viz, in 1848, to $2,300.

The congregation had long felt the need of a cemetery. At this point, Gen. Borland with that public spirit which vas his wont, gave the ground where the present cemetery is now located, this ground being parceled out in plots and scrip issued at twenty-five dollars per plot, furnished a fund to pay the debt. It should be said here, that Dr. Fairchild deserves great credit for the zeal in carrying out this movement and thus cancelling the debt so long resting on the Church.

7

HISTORY OF THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH.

The health of Dr. Fairchild being impaired in the Fall of 1849, he vacated the pulpit, the con- gregation meanwhile, at his suggestion, employed the Rev. Dr. Judd as a supply. Dr. Judd labored with great acceptance during the Winter of 1849 and 1850 and the health of Dr. Fairchild not being improved to resume his labors, the congregation saw their way open to secure the services of Dr. Judd. The call was made out and he was accor- dingly installed September 4th, 1850. Dr. Judd continued his labors with great acceptance until March 3d, 1860, when he was called from the labor of the church militant to join in the blessings and pleasures of the church triumphant in heaven. His remains were interred at Bloomfield, N. J. Eighty-three persons were received during his ministry, forty-one by profession, and forty-two by letter. Upon the death of Dr. Judd, the health of Dr. Fairchild having improved, he was for the third time induced to labor in this vine- vard. He came in April, 1860, and remained till October, 1861, when his former indisposition returned and he was obliged to leave. He was not installed at either of his last two settlements. During the year 1860, Messrs. Alex. Beattie and Miller VanKeuren were admitted to the eldership. On the 7th of April, 1862, Rev. Joseph M. Mc- Nulty was elected pastor and continued till the sitting of the Presbytery, April 22d, 1868. During

the six years of his ministry, seventy-one persons were received into the membership of the Church, although during the troublesome times of war: fifty-five by profession and sixteen by letter.

Rev. Richard Bentley accepted the call of the congregation, July 8, 1868; was installed Nov. 10th of the same year; dismissed by Presbytery, November, 1871. During the three years of his ministry, thirty-five persons were received into the Church, twenty-two by letter and thirteen by profession.

From 1868 to 1870 the congregation expended $2.000 in new roofing the Church and parsonage, painting and frescoing the interior of the Church and general repairs.

In January, 1873, the Rev. John Ward ac- cepted the call of the congregation and commenced his labors. He was installed May 22, 1873, twenty-nine persons were received into the Church during his ministry, twenty-five by profession and four by letter. Of this number the greater portion were young persons, who had been connected with the Sunday School and Bible Class. At this com- munion in June, 1874, Messrs. Ahial Decker, Alex. T. Russell, Daniel M. Wade, Frederic Bodine and Peter E Miller were admitted into the eldership of this Church. The pastoral relations between Mr. Ward and the congregation were dissolved on the 19th of April, 1875.

HISTORY OF THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCHI.

The Rev. James C. Forsyth our present pastor, came to us July, 1875; installed, October 14th following. The union, we trust, is to be one of mutual comfort and spiritual benefit. The Great Head of the Church has already set to it the seal of His divine approval. The Church has increased her numbers. Believers have. been quickened and sinners comforted. Since Rev. Mr. Forsyth became our pastor, nearly fifteen years, eighty-five persons have been received in full communion into the Church on profession of their faith in Christ, and sixty-two by certificate. Fifty six infants have been baptized and twenty- nine adults.

The debt which was upon the Church and congregation has been fully paid, the parsonage has been repaired, grounds around both Church and parsonage have been greatly improved, mak- ing both more valuable.

During the year 1889, the church edifice was thoroughly repaired both inside and outside. Repairs consisting of new tin roof, new stained glass windows, painted two coats on the outside, inside being frescoed, new carpet, seats painted and grained with many other suitable embellish- ments, making the whole Church beautiful and attractive at a cost of $2,161.97.

The Church membership is about two hun- dred. The congregation is united and all of the

congregation are ready to contribute for the wel- fare of the Church, which is clearly shown by prompt payment of salary and other expenses connected with the growth of our Church, amounting to the sum total per year of $2,000.

As we look upon the scene, the language of our hearts is beautiful for situation; the joy of the earth is Mt. Zion.

Whilst we acknowledge the good hand of our God in planting this Church and in watching over it through all the fifty-nine years of peril and con- fiet to which it has been exposed, let us who are now working in the vineyard remember that our duty is to watch and pray.

From the memories and experiences of the past, the promises and assurances of God's Word, it becomes us to renew our work, that we may acquit ourselves like true men and women, worthy as the cause in which we are engaged. Be it ours then "To walk about Zion; to go round about Her; tell the towers thereof; mark ye well her bulwarks; consider her palaces," that ye may tell it to the generation following. Praise ye the Lord.

The following are the minister and officers of our Church at the present writing, viz, April Ist, 1890:
