HISTORY OF THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH.

CONFESSION OF FAITH.

I. YOU BELIEVE, That there is one only liv- ing and true GOD, infinitely perfect, the Creator, Preserver, and governor of all things; that this one GOD exists mysteriously in three persons, the FATHER, the SON and the HOLY GHOST, the same in substance, and equal in all perfections.

II. That the Scriptures of the Old and New Testament are the Word of GOD, the only infal- lible rule of faith and practice.

III. That our first Parents were made perfect- ly holy; but, by disobedience, fell from the state in which they were created; in consequence of which, all their posterity are, by nature entirely sinful.

IV. That GOD, in his infinite and sovereign mercy, has provided a SAVIOUR, even JESUS CHRIST, His dearly beloved and only begotten Son, who having become incarnate, by his obedi- ence unto death, "even the death of the Cross," made a complete atonement for sin; so that, all who believe in Him obtain the forgiveness of their sins and a sure title to eternal life.

V. That salvation is freely offered to all; but that all mankind having by nature that carnal

mind which "is enmity against God," are so com- pletely sinful that no one will repent of sin and believe in CHRIST, until GOD, according to His determinate and eternal counsel, renew his heart, by the sovereign and efficacious influence of his Holy Spirit.

VI. That all true believers persevere in faith and holiness, being kept by the power of GOD through faith unto salvation.

VII. That the Law of GOD, which requires perfect holiness of heart and life, is the rule which Christians are bound to observe.

VIII. That Baptism and the Lord's Supper are Christian ordinances; the latter of which is to be administered only to professing believers; and the former to professing believers and to their households.

IX. That it is the duty of heads of families ain family religion by habitual religious instruction, and daily prayer with their households.

X. That the first day of the week, "The Lord's day," is to be strictly observed in obedience to the fourth commandment as the Christian Sabbath.

XI. That at the end of the world, there will be a Resurrection of the bodies of all mankind, and a day of judgment; when CHRIST, the Judge, will sentence the wicked to endless punishment, and receive the righteous to life everlasting.

SACRAMENT OF BAPTIS M.

Beloved in the Lord: You present yourselves in this manner before God and those who are here to witness this transaction, that you may devote these, your children, to God in the ordinance of baptism. The transaction is not a device of man, or a mere formal ceremony. It is an appointment of Jesus Christ, significant in its import. and in- volving solemn responsibilities. The application of water to your children, in the name of the Trinity, will not, of itself, effect their renovation, or secure their salvation. It reminds you, how- over, that they are, by nature, entirely destitute of holiness and totally deprived, and so stand in need of cleansing by the blood of Christ and the renovating influence of His spirit, and that God has been please ! to enter into a gracious covenant with His people, through the Redeemer, and to give them a seal, or outward confirmation of this covenant, and of His faithfulness to its promises. In this transaction you profess your faith and per- sonal interest in this covenant, and declare your conviction that these children, whom God has given to you, also have a part in the covenant, and stand so related to it that it is proper to ap- ply the seal of the covenant to them. You also

47

profess to consecrate these children to God, to be His, acknowledging His right to use and dispose of them according to His own pleasure, and your obligation to train them up, in all the methods of His appointment, for His service. Let me remind you that the fulfillment of the obligation will put in requisition all your wisdom, and all the gracious aids which God has promised to His believing peo- ple. It will be incumbent on you, according to the measure of your ability, to instruct these, your children, in the principles of the religion which you profess; to restrain them from sin; to set be- fore them a godly example; and to pray with and for them.

These, and all other known duties incumbent on you as Christian parents, do you, with the help of God, engage to perform ?

[Baptism is here administered, and prayer offered for the Divine approval and blessing.]

THE PUBLIC WELCOME OF MEMBERS.

You do. now, solemnly and publicly confess the Lord to be your God; you dedicate to Him your soul and body, your time, talent, influence, and all that you possess; and you promise, in re- liance upon His grace, to live a sober and godly

life, in the denial of all unrighteousness, and to endeavor, in all your conduct, to adorn the doc- trine of God, your Saviour, by a faithful discharge of all your obligations, public and private, as the disciples of Christ.

You engage to walk in Christian fellowship with this church, to study her peace and prosper- ity, to honor her discipline, to observe her ordi- nances, and to co-operate with her in sustaining at home, and in sending abroad, the privileges and institutions of the Gospel.

You also promise to maintain your Christian profession and to hold fast your Christian vows, whereever you may be called to reside; and that, should you have occasion to change your church relation, you will endeavor to effect the change in an orderly manner, and without any unnecessary delay.

Do you thus covenant ?

[The church standing will then, through the officiat- ing Minister, welcome the new members in the following words : 7

In view of these professions we, the officers and members of this church, cordially greet you as the disciples of Jesus Christ, and as members of His body. In His name, we welcome you to

fellowship with us in the duties and labors, in the hopes and joys of the Gospel.

"The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face to shine upon you, and be gracious unto you. The Lord lift up His counte- nance upon you and give you peace."

THE UNDERSIGNED, having been duly ap- pointed a committee to prepare and pub- lish a brief history of the 1st Presbyterian Church of Montgomery Village, N. Y., hereby submit the foregoing as the result of their labors, with the hope that it may meet the approval of the congregation.

THEODORE L. JACKSON, FREDERIC BODINE.
