To search for specific names, type keywords into the search bar in your PDF reader. If a keyword search doesn't turn up expected results, we recommend that you also scroll down into the alphabetical listings to search for the name, as the font-reading software is not perfect.
The table of contents below can also give you an idea of where to look within the document for other kinds of information listed in the directory, like street guides, government listings, and advertisement indices. Note that the PDF page number and the original directory page numbers are different, because the color-printed advertisement pages in the directories were not numbered.

COLTON DENTAL ASSOCIATION
Originated the use of NITROUS OXIDE GAS in 1863, for the Painless Extraction of Teeth. We have given the Gas, up to this date, May 2d, 1867, to 20,107 PATIENTS,
Without a single Failure or Accident.
Every Patient has written his or her name on our scroll, certifying that the operation was painless and the Gas pleasant.
We are often asked the question, whether persons in delicate health, or those whose lungs or heart are affected, or young children or aged persons, may safely breathe the gas ? We answer, they may. We have very many times given the gas to children under three years and to persons over seventy years of age. We have also repeatedly administered the gas to invalids confined to their beds, and uniformly with the most happy results.
We administer the gas by means of a very simple, yet nicely contrived, valved mouth- piece, which secures to the patient pure gas at every breath. It is well known that Dr. Colton (the head of this Association) has for more than twenty years given much attention to the use of nitrous oxide gas, and that it is to him the world is indebted for its introduc- tion as a great alleviator of human suffering.
There are several advantages in the Gas over Chloroform and Ether. First. It is harm- less ; the most nervous and delicate can breathe it with safety. Second, It destroys ALL pain in the extraction of teeth, where the gas is pure and properly administered. Third, No nausea, sickness, or other unpleasant symptoms attend or follow its inhalation.
J. M. Carnochan, M. D., Surgeon-in-chief to the State Emigrants' Hospital, New York, etc., etc., says : "I have no hesitation in stating that the nitrous oxide gas, as an anasthetic, is far superior to either Chloroform or Ether. Insensibility is suddenly produced, and the patient recovers consciousness quickly, the operation being attended by no nausea or sick- ness, and without the dangerous effects often incident to chloroform and ether. It is worthy of remark that the nitrous oxide gas approximates, in its chemical combination, to the com- position of the ordinary atmosphere, and we may thus, inferentially, account for its more favorable influence."
We are willing to say to all patients, "We will charge you nothing if we cause you any pain." Come to headquarters,

PREFACE.
-
IN presenting our edition for 1867-68, we have to announce that it con- tains 74,120 names; this is an increase of 5,150 over last year. This large increase shows how rapidly our city is growing in extent and popu- lation, and proves that we have not failed to obtain a thorough canvass. In fact, the well-tried system which we adopt is sure to afford a complete and (as nearly as practicable) correct return of the residents. We would also call attention to the Appendix, which has been carefully compiled, and shows addi- tions to the number of banks, churches, &c.
A few months since it was announced that a Business Directory would be published in connection with the regular edition, but circumstances beyond our control having transpired, its accomplishment has been prevented. Here- after, however, a Business Directory will be issued as heretofore stated.
During the past year parties have been pretending to canvass for various Directories, and have, in some instances, to our knowledge, collected money with the pretense for advertisements, when they were, in reality, swindling the persons with whom they were dealing. All are cautioned against these impos- tors. We collect no money in advance except for names inserted in capital letters, and our agents are provided with printed receipts signed by us. Our advertisements are payable upon publication on presentation of the order signed by the advertiser, and indorsed by J. LAIN & Co.
The additional number of pages in this edition makes the work of greater cost, and the price should have been advanced, but it is our desire that the Directory be kept at as reasonable a figure as possible, and it will remain the same as last year, $3.50 per copy.
