To search for specific names, type keywords into the search bar in your PDF reader. If a keyword search doesn't turn up expected results, it is recommended that you also scroll down into the alphabetical listings to search for the name, as the text-recognition software is not perfect.

The table of contents below can also give you an idea of where to look within the document for other kinds of information listed in the directory, like street guides, government listings, and advertisement indices. Note that the PDF page number and the original directory page numbers are different, because the color-printed advertisement pages in the directories were not numbered.

PREFACE.

To those not familiar with the details of Directory compilation, there exists quite a general idea that the Directory is prepared by correcting the volume of the past year. We believe this plan is adopted in some cities, but in a city like ours, where so very many changes take place during the year, of removals, deaths, and from other causes, the Directory must be made entirely new, the volume of the preceding year only being useful for references and comparisons. When this is taken into consideration, the magnitude of our task is apparent.

Our City Directory has grown to be a volume of more than one thousand pages ; too large we think to continue with it the Business Directory, and this year we publish the City and Business Directories in separate volumes, which leaves the former a volume of more convenient size. By this plan we are enabled to sell the City Directory at a reduced price-an item to be considered these times.

We take this opportunity of calling the attention of the public to our Library of Directories, which contains the Brooklyn Directory of each year from 1841 to date, and also of the fol- lowing named States and Cities :

The most thorough and careful canvass of the city has been made, and we feel confident that the present issue will be found the most complete of any heretofore issued ; our long experience enabling us to make improvements from year to year.

This volume contains 118,320 names, an increase of 696 over last year, which is not so large an increase as has been shown in previous years; but the depression of business experienced during the past few years has had a tendency not to increase the growth of cities.
