To search for specific names, type keywords into the search bar in your PDF reader. If a keyword search doesn't turn up expected results, we recommend that you also scroll down into the alphabetical listings to search for the name, as the text-recognition software is not perfect.
The table of contents below can also give you an idea of where to look within the document for other kinds of information listed in the directory, like street guides, government listings, and advertisement indices. Note that the PDF page number and the original directory page numbers are different, because the color-printed advertisement pages in the directories were not numbered.

Actual Surplus,

Being over 215 per cent. on the Capital, comparing favorably with other Companies, especially in the indemnity offered by its Policies.
In presenting the Annual Statement of the Company, the Officers have pleasure in pointing to its favorable condition, and congratulating its Stock Holders, Policy Holders, and friends generally, upon the satisfactory results of the business of the year just terminated.
Extracts from the Annual Report to the Superintendent of the Insurance Department :
The Scrip issued by this Company, for accumulated or reserved profits, can in no sense be a present or even a prospective liability, except in the following contingency, which is the terms of its issue, viz:
" Whenever the said Scrip Fund shall exceed Five Hundred Thousand Dollars, the Board of Directors shall thereafter apply the excess thereof annually towards the redemption of the Serip, commencing with that earliest issued.
The Scrip Fund, standing on that condition, is a clear, unfettered, unalienable indemnity to the Policies-as much so as the Capital.
The sensible and frank avowal of the Great National Board of Underwriters, and also of the Boards of this and other cities, that our Policies on the "participation plan" are better Insurance- worth ten and twenty per cent. more-than the Policies of the Non-Participating Companies (being "iron-clad," as it were, by the large scrip fund), has had the beneficial effect to largely increase the business and prosperity of the Company-thereby extending its usefulness and advancing the interest and security of its Policy Holders.
The Company will continue, as heretofore, to Insure respectable parties against disaster by fire on the Participation Plan, or "in the Old Fashioned way,"' as may be agreed upon. [ The prompt and liberal adjustment of losses, when " fair and square," will also continue the specialty of the Company.
