(Consult Pages 9 and 10 to determine which central offices" you should dit di- reci) " --

When you hear dial tone, keep the re -.. ceiver off it holder and dial the first two letters of the central office name, then the office numeral, and then each figure of the line number! For example, if dialing

If the number called has a party line letter, dial the number in the same way, followed by the letter at the end of the. number ..

If you make a mistake while dialing, replace the receiver on its holder, wait a few seconds, and make another attempt .. 1| Before starting to dial a second call, always teplace the receiver for a few seconds.

Signals for Which to Listen

Within a few seconds after you have completed dialing, you should hear either the ringing signal, an intermittent burr. tr-ing sound, of the busy signal, a rapid: buzz-buzz-buzz.

" If you hear in interrupted buzzing sound, as buzz bazz-buzz-buzz, it indi- cates that you Have dialed the central office designation incorrectly. Replace the

Incompleted Calls

When, for any reason, you do not obi- tain a connection ( for example, the called line is busy or does not answer ), you will get quicker service if you replace the receiver on! ils holder and try the call mediately calling the operator for assist- ance. No charge is made unless you obtain an answer from a subscriber's tele- phone.

Obtaining Assistance from the Operator

"In an emergency, or if you have trouble in dialing, or have occasion to report cases of service irregularities, yoll may call the operator for assistance byl pulling the opening in the dial for the word 'OPERATOR' Ground to the finger stop, then allowing the dial to re- turn to its normal position."

"When you have reached the oper ator, she may be' recalled, in case it is necessary to do so, by |depressing and releasing the movable part of the re ceiver holder slowly, a few times. This can be done only when you have dialed and reached the operator; on other dialed

calls, moving the receiver holder will break the connection.".

Calls from a Party Line or from a Line With an Extension Telephone

Always make sure that the line is not in use. If you do not hear; the dial tone, inquire if the line is being held by some other person. If no_response is received, replace the receNer Du it's hohler for. a. few seconds and make another-attempt.

Listen on the line while dialing, and if - "~you hear another party come in on the "line "or "hear successive clicks 'in the re- ceiver, it indicates that someone else: on . your 'line is trying to call. . Inform hint - "That the ling is in use and request him to. _replace his receiver. When he does jo, replace your own receiver for a few i: sepu ds, and stirn reunge it and dial'the complete number again

The operation of dial coin telephones is quite similar to that described above. The main difference is that it is necessary to deposit a coin in order to obtain dial tone (indicating that the line is ready for you to dial). If you do not obtain ap answer from a subscriber's telephone, your coin will be returned after you replace the receiver on its holder.
