EXPLANATIONS.

It is the design of this Catalogue to furnish, with reference to every person who, up to the date of issue, has been a student of the Seminary, trustworthy information respecting the time and place of his birth, of his preparatory studies, whether collegiate or theological, of his subsequent public services, and in cases that may require it, of his death.

In each class, names preceding the dividing line are those of full graduates; those underneath the line are names of students who did not take the regular course of study in all its parts, or who did not remain until the course was com- pleted. The time spent in the Seminary by each partial student is indicated by dates separated by a dash (as, 1853-55); wherever the letters R. T. S. appear, followed by the mention of a single year, the student is a full graduate in the regular class of that year.

It is to be borne in mind that before 1852, the course of study in the Semi- nary extended over but two years. The Class of 1863, and all subsequent classes, have pursued a course extending over three years.

The German Department of the Seminary, of which a Catalogue is also given, furnishes instruction to such persons as, not having had the advantages of collegiate training, seek to prepare themselves to serve the German Baptist churches, as pastors and as preachers in the German language.

Where the contrary is not stated, the names mentioned are those of persons professing the faith of the Baptist denomination, and the churches mentioned are Baptist churches.

A key to the Abbreviations of the names of Colleges and other Institutions mentioned in the Catalogue, together with a tabular statement of the number of students of the Seminary who have received their preliminary training in each of these Institutions, will be found appended to the Catalogue.

An asterisk (*) prefixed to the name of any student indicates that he is de- ceased. A dash (-) following the concluding date of a paragraph, indicates that the person still continues in the location or occupation mentioned.

Although care has been exercised in the compilation of this Catalogue, it is hardly to be supposed that error has been entirely avoided, especially in the case of those whose history has been ascertained, not from themselves, but from others. The assistance of all graduates and friends of the Institution is solicited, in order that the record, where it is imperfect, may be rectified or completed.

Communications with regard to future changes of location, or with regard to corrections in the present Catalogue, may be sent to any member of the Faculty of the Seminary.
