Preface.


The 179th regiment of Infantry was or- ganized by the late Col. William M. Gregg, in Elmira. Companies A, B, C, D, E, F and G were mustered into service of the United States for three years, on April 5, 13 and 23, May 11, 16 and 25, and July 20, 1864, respectively ; for one and three years, Co. H, on September 13, 1864; and for one year's service, Companies I and K on Sep- tember 13 and 15 respectively. Company G. which was originally Company A of the 180th New York Volunteers, did not join the regiment until July 29, 1864.


The companies were recruited principally in the following places : Company A at Elmira, Lockport and Buffalo ; B at El- mira ; C at Italy, Hornellsville, Tyrone, Reading, Dix, Cohocton, Niagara, Royal- ton, Butternuts, Andover and Batavia ; D at Ellicottsville, Portville, Dunkirk, Free-

dom, Carrolton, Buffalo, Conewango, Cly- mer, Hinsdale and Onondaga ; E at Buffalo, Hopewell and Phelps ; F at Buffalo, Ben- ton, Middlesex, Potter, Milo, Southport, Hornellsville, Jerusalem and Warsaw ; G at Elmira, Horseheads, Niagara, Hornellsville' Ellicottsville, Amity, Chemung, Dansville, Big Flats and Bradford ; I at Ithaca, New- field, Danby and Caroline; K at Sanford, Tioga, Candor, Vestal, Union and Port Crane.


The regiment left the state in detach- ments, and served in the 22d corps from May, 1864; in the Second Brigade, First Division, Ninth Corps, A. P., from June 11, 1864 ; in the First Brigade, First Division, Ninth Corps, from June 18, 1864; in the Second Brigade, First Division, Ninth Corps, from July, 1864; in the Second Brigade, Second Division, Ninth Corps, from Septem- ber, 1864. The regiment was commanded by Colotiel Gregg, and was mustered out of service on June 8, 1865, while on the field near Alexandria, Va., having served about fourteen months.

During its service the regiment lost by death a total of 191 men as follows : killed in action, four officers and thirty-six en- listed men; died of wounds received in action, three officers and thirty enlisted men ; died of disease and other causes 111 enlisted men, making a total of seven offi- cers and 184 enlisted men out of a total of 1080 men in the entire regiment. Twenty- five enlisted men died in the hands of the enemy.


The officers who died were Lieutenant-Colonel Frank- lin B. Doty, who died April 5, 1865, of wounds received in action two days before that date.

Hatcher's Run, Va., October 27 and 28, 1864. Fort Stedman, Va., March 25. 1864.


Appomattox Campaign, Va., March 28, 1865. Before Petersburg, Va., April 2, 1855. Fall of Petersburg, April 2, 1865. .


During these battles 215 members were wounded of whom thirty-three died and 182 recovered. The regiment was noted for its aggressive work.

COMPANY D.


The original company was known as the "Dunkirk Company," and was mainly com- posed of men from the extreme western end of the state who enlisted for three years. The company was mustered into the United States service May 11, 1864, at Elmira. Franklin B. Doty was mustered in as Lieu- tenant-Colonel of the regiment on the same day and very soon afterwards joined the other companies previously mustered on Ar- lington Heights, Va., where Lieut-Colonel Doty took command of the battalion May 22, 1864.


COMMISSIONED OFFICERS.


Albert H. Pierson, captain. This officer recruited in great part a company for the regiment but was taken sick, and his men were assigned to other companies. He had enlisted as a private and on joining the regiment in Jan., 1865, received a commission as captain of this com- pany, dated Jan. 12, 1865. Severely wounded in the ankle April 2, 1865. Breveted major at the close of war.

Was raised principally in Yates County, N. Y., and was known as the "Pen Yan Company." The men were all enlisted for three years and were mustered into the United States service at Elmira, May 25. 1864. J. Barnett Sloan, who was mustered as Major with Company F, left Elmira with the company June 1st, and all except fifteen "bounty jumpers" joined the other five companies at Whitehouse Landing, Va., June, 1864.

COMPANY G.


This company was composed of three years men and was mustered into the United States service at Elmira, July 20th, 1864, as Company A of the 180th N. Y. V., but was immediately afterwards made Company G of the 179th, and it joined the latter regi- ment in the trenches near Petersburg July 29th, 1864, and participated in the battle of the next day.
