COMPANY I.


This company was composed most wholly of Tompkins County men, nearly all of whom enlisted in the latter part of August and fore part of September, 1864, for one year. The company was mustered into the United States service September 13, 1864, at Elmira, and joined the regiment in the field near Petersburg, Va., about September 18, 1864.

This company was raised mostly in Broome, Tioga and adjoining counties. The men en- listed for one year in August and September, 1864, and were separately mustered at Owe- go at about the date of enlistment. The company was mustered into the United States · service September 15, 1864, at Elmira, and joined the regiment September 20, 1864.

In the year 1880, Jan. 22, a few of the members of the 179th Regiment met at El_ mira, N. Y., for the purpose of organizing an association to be called the 179th Regi- ment Veterans' Association. The meeting was called to order by Lieutenant Edward Lounsbery of Brookton, with T. F. Mc- Donald, Secretary, and each succeeding year the association has met in reunion.
