To search for specific names, type keywords into the search bar in your PDF reader. If a keyword search doesn't turn up expected results, it is recommended that you also scroll down into the alphabetical listings to search for the name, as the text-recognition software is not perfect.
The table of contents below can also give you an idea of where to look within the document for other kinds of information listed in the directory, like street guides, government listings, and advertisement indices. Note that the PDF page number and the original directory page numbers are different, because the color-printed advertisement pages in the directories were not numbered.

PREFACE.
The two great necessities of Brooklyn-the Bridge, and the Directory for 1863-4 -- are given to its citizens almost simultaneously. There is not any truer index of the growth of the City than the latter, and there cannot be any more complete benefit than the former. They both contribute in the highest degree to the convenience of its citizens. There only remains to be accomplished a rapid transit system, to complete our right to rank as a residential and business place combining all the advantages and accommodations possible. And with this will, of necessity, come the making of the Bridge exempt from toll. This great highway, locking together these two grand Cities, whose interests are so identical, must soon be made as free to the traveler over them as any of the land roads which it continues and connects. We have, in many previous years, expressed our faith in this great work, and we have seen our population largely increasing, year after year, in anticipation of its use. Its fulfillment was the fruit of many expectant years, and it was long doubtful when it would be finished. But, largely through the exertions and vim of our present excellent Mayor, more especially, though, by reason of public agitation for it, it is at last a fait accompli. It is a monument to the skill and devotion of all those who assisted in its con- struction, and a boon to the people of Brooklyn, for which they will ever be grateful. Soon will come safe and speedy travel by rail over it, and from it, even to the utter- most parts. Wide avennes of approach are necessities. Washington street should, and probably will, be widened ; but surely there must be a broad and direct avenue leading from the Bridge through the business center to the homes beyond. This will be accom- plished by extending Flatbush avenue, thus affording the desideratum, than which there is none greater in the minds and hearts of our people, save ouly rapid transit. Brooklyn has had a very large augmentation of dwelling accommodation, and many massive and elegant buildings for business purposes have been erectod during the past year. It is soon to have a new Post-Office Building, of grand proportions, and eligibly located. The march of Time will bring to us more and more population, buildings, improvements and adornments, until our beloved City shall stand out among those of all the world as wanting nothing, and affording the pleasantest and most convenient of homes.
And now a few words about ourselves :
For all our working life we have been Directory-making, but never did we feel a greater pride in our work than we do in that of this year. This has been a triumphant year for Brooklyn, and its Directory is its standard bearer.
This volume contains 152,280 names, an increase over last year of 9,909 names. The next volume, we are confident, will show a still larger increase.
We have felt that the time has arrived when we must separate the Business Directory from the City Directory ; and so we have made distinct publications of each. In 1879, the price of the complete Directory was $5.00. It then contained 125,440 names. Since 1879 the names have increased by 26,840. This enlargement is equal to over 200 pages of printed matter, and is more than is contained in the Business Directory, so that we, this year, give more matter for the same price than we gave in 1880, which was the first year the price was $5.50. The new Business Directory was canvassed for and compiled at the same time as the City Directory, and, therefore, we are enabled to offer it at the merely nominal price of $1 per copy. In it each business, trade and profession is classified. These books should both be a part of the equipment of every business house in our City and vicinity.
BROOKLYN, June, 1883.
