To search for names of people or business, type keywords into the search bar in your PDF reader. If a keyword search doesn't turn up expected results, it is recommended that you also scroll down into the alphabetical listings to search for the name, as the font-reading software is not perfect. The table of contents below can also give you an idea of where to look within the document for other kinds of information listed in the directory, like street guides and government agencies. Note that the PDF page number and the original directory page numbers are different, because the color-printed advertising pages in the directories were not numbered.

JEFFERY'S IMPROVED DOUBLE-ACTING SUCTION AND FORCE PUMP.

WITH INDIA RUBBER BALL VALVES.

AWARDED

NEW YORK

THE FIRST

STATE FAIR

PATENTED JUNE 5" 1855.

PREMIUM

HELD AT

AT THE

Elmira, 1855

The Proprietors in introducing this new Pump to the Public, feel a confidence that their efforts to bring it into general use, will be seconded by all, who see its construction and operation. The perfect adaptation of solid Balls of India Rubber for pump valves, will at once be apparent to every thinking mind.

Their imperviousness to water, and their yielding surfaces secure a certainty of operation, and a perfection of action, which cannot be attained by the use of any other valves The simplicity of arrangement-the facility with which the parts can be removed, and replaced-the compact form, and unique appearance, render this one the most perfect and desirable Pump in use.

Among the many advantages secured by the use of this Pump, the following may be enumerated.

1 .- A double action, by which twice the water can be raised at the same time.

2 .- Great ease in working, thus adapting the Force Principle to common wells.

3 .- The transformation, in a moment, of the Pump into an efficient FIRE ENGINE, thus rendering the loss of dwellings by fire, totally unnecessary.

4 .- Capability of watering Gardens, Lawns, &c., or sprinkling Walks, or washing Windows, with the utmost ease and thoroughness.

5 .- Power to raise water with slight labor, to any reasonable height, as in supplying chambers, &c.

6 .- The convenience of having the Pump in a kitchen, or other rooms of your dwelling, with out regard to the location of the Well, or Cistern.

7 .- The easy protection of the instrument against FROST.

8 .- The ease with which it may be mounted on wheels, or in other ways made PORTABLE.

9 .- A simplicity which ensures great durability, protects it from being thrown out of order, and makes any repairs easy and of little cost : and secures,

10 .- Great CHEAPNESS : for the first time bringing the cost of the Force Pump into the neighborhood of the common Suction and Chain Pumps, while it is immeasurably superior to both. Manufactured and for sale by BROWN, JEFFERY & Co., Corning, New York.

All orders for Pumps or the right of Territory in the Counties embracing Long Island, and the waters thereof, should be addressed to GURDON MILLER, No. 9, Court St., Brooklyn.

And for West Chester, Putnam, Dutchess, Columbia, Rensselaer and Washington Counties in GURDON MILLER, No. 9 Court St, Brooklyn.

JAMES A. TREMERE & Co.'s PORTABLE FORGE

Has been got up with great care, both with reference to utility and appearance, and only requires to be seen to satisfy the purchaser of its superiority over all other kinds heretofore in use, for the same or like purposes. The graduating Twier Iron which we use together with the slide damper, by which the am unt of air is perfectly gradu- ated, and places the blast entirely under the control of the operator. This mode of governing the blast, will; with all scientific mechanics, have a governing influence in their purchasing, as the blast is all that a forge is for, and this is the only one that has any apparatus whereby the blast can be regulated at the option of the operator.
