SMITH'S
BROOKLYN DIRECTORY.
FOR THE YEAR ENDING
MAY 1st, 1857.
BEING A
GENERAL DIRECTORY OF THE INHABITANTS,
WITH AN
AVENUE AND STREET GUIDE,
AND AN APPENDIX.
CONTAINING A RECORD OF THE CITY GOVERNMENT, COUNTY OFFICERS, THE COURTS, MILITARY, NAVY YARD, CITY BANKS, INSURANCE AND MISCELLANEOUS COMPANIES, AND PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS.
W. H. SMITH, COMPILER.
BROOKLYN: PUBLISHED BY CHARLES JENKINS. Office, Room 6, Montague Hall. 1856.
Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1856, by CHARLES JENKINS, In the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the United States, for the Southern District of New York.
PRINTED BY EDWARD O. JENKINS, 26 Frankfort street.
TO THE PUBLIC.
THE Compiler of this work thinks it proper to say a few words to its Patrons, relative to his efforts to furnish them with a regularly-published and complete Directory, as the circumstances of the case admits of doing.
It was his intention when he first attempted it, three years ago, to make a Directory that would so nearly satisfy the public wants, as to leave but little room for complaint, perfection not being thought attainable. It was generally conceded, that the first compilation was far in advance of all preceding and contemporary Directories of Brooklyn. The succeeding (last year's) compilation was unfortunately delayed in time of publication, through the loss of several thousands of the names that had been obtained, which were abstracted from the office by some dishonest person, who it was believed took that method to injure the reputation of the work ; the loss of a part of the names made it necessary to recanvass, causing a serious loss of time and money.
Few persons know the difficulties encountered in making a Directory of a large city ; and Brooklyn being a large city with but little business, makes the expenses much larger in proportion to the returns, than in other places, because it is the business of a place that furnishes advertising, also purchasers for a work of this kind.
The Compiler being dependent on the canvassers for the accuracy of the work, and from the persons that can be obtained to attend to an employment for so short a time, it is very difficult to select competent and reliable men. The public and publisher must suffer from their incompetency or dishonesty, for in the limited time occupied in getting up such works, errors are not discovered till too late for remedy.
By a complete and thorough canvass of the entire city, it has been the 'endeavor to make the Directory of names full and accurate; it has also a Street and Business Directory, a new map of the whole consolidated city, and other useful information.
It is hoped that the result of the effort will meet the approbation of the public.
W. H. SMITH.

DR. JOHN WESLEY KELLEY, ANALYTICA PHYSICIAN.
That superior success has hitherto attended the Analytical Practice, no one dare gainsay ; for the living evidences of its merits are too numerous to be confronted. The "Analytical System of Medicine" opposes all Vegetable, Animal, and Mineral Poisons or deleterious practices, and relies on VEGETABLE NON-POISONS alone for the accomplishment of satisfactory results in the treat- ment of the following diseases, whether acute or chronic, viz. :
Diseases of the Lungs, Liver, Heart, Spleen, Kidneys, &c., together with their attendant symptoms, pain in the side, or between the shoulder-blades ; Indiges- tion, Flatulence, or wind upon the Stomach, Costiveness, Piles, Yellowness of the Skin, Jaundice, Rheumatism, Despondency, Nervousness, Debility, &c .; Asthma, Phthisis, and all Constitutional Diseases, pain across the small of back, Numbness of the Limbs, Dropsy, Diabetes, &c. Fever and Ague, Congestion of the Spleen, Palpitation of the Heart, Faintness, Dimness of Vision, Epileptic Fits, Catalepsy, Ossification of the Heart or Arteries, &c. ; Diseases of Men, Women and Children, and all Diseases arising from a vitiated state of the Blood and other Fluids. Advice given with candor and without Charge.
