Proceed at once to dial the four

Note: When you are through with the call, hang up the re- ceiver for a few seconds before dialing another number.

To Dial Operator (Assistance Calls)

If you wish to report a service irregularity or in case you have trouble in dialing a call, you can reach the operator by placing your finger in the last finger hole marked "Operator" and pulling the dial around once to the finger : stop. Then release the dial and the opera- tor will answer.

Uncompleted Calls

When, for any reason, you do not ob- tain a connection (for example, the called line is busy or does not answer, or you do not hear the ringing signal ) you will usually get quicker service if you try the call again yourself at intervals, in- stead of immediately calling the operator for assistance. No charge is made unless you obtain an answer from a subscriber's_ telephone.

Party Line Subscribers

Before starting to dial always make sure that the line is not in use. If you do not hear the dial tone, inquire if the fine is being held by some other person. If no response is received, hang up the receiver for a few seconds and make another attempt.

Listen,on the line while dialing and if you hear another party come in on the line or hear successive clicks in the re- ceiver, it indicates that some one else on your line is trying to call. Inform him that the line is in use and request him to hang up his receiver. When he does so, hang up your own receiver for a few seconds and then remove it and dial the complete number again.

To call another party, on your line, dial the operator, give her the number you wish to call, state that it is the number of another party on your line and give her your number.

To Call an Extension Station Connected With Your Line

Dial the operator, give her your num- ber and ask her to ring the extension station' connected with your line.

Listen for the "Dial Tone"

The Dial Tone is a steady humming sound, which indicates that the line is ready for you to dial. DO NOT start to dial until you hear it. If you do not hear the dial tone, hang up the receiver and try again a little later. After hearing the dial tone, keep the receiver off the hook until you have finished with the call.

In case no dial tone can be obtained after repeated trials, report the condition to "repair service," using another tele- phone.

What to Dial

You will notice that in the Directory the telephone numbers are shown with the first two letters of the central office name capitalized and with a central office nu- meral following the name. Dial the two capitalized letters, the central office nu- meral, then the figures in the number and the party line letter, if there is one.

Signals for Which to Listen

Within a few seconds after you have completed dialing, you should hear either the ringing signal, an intermittent burr- rr-ing sound, or the busy signal, a rapid buzz-buzz-buzz. If you hear an inter- rupted buzzing sound, as buzz-buzz ----- buzz-buzz, it indicates that you have dialed the central office designation in- correctly. Hang yp the receiver, wait a few seconds, and make another attempt, being careful to dial the central office de- signation correctly.

If you do not hear any signal within half a minute, hang up the receiver, wait a few seconds and make another attempt.

HOW TO USE THE MANUAL TELEPHONE

Directions for placing Out-of-Town calls are given on Page 6.

Obtain Correct Telephone Number

Obtain the telephone number from the latest issue of the telephone directory. If you cannot find the number in the di- rectory, obtain it from "Information." There is no charge for calls to "In- formation."

How to Place Calls

Give the number to the operator in the following manner :

CA nal 6-0027 say "Canal six (pause), oh-oh --- two-seven."

JO hn 4-1253 say "John four (pause), one- 1wo-five-three." MA in 4-2125-J say "Main four (pause), two- one-1wo-five-]."

HA nover 2-4800 say "Hanover two (pause), four-eight-hundred."

WO rth 2-5000 say "Worth 1wo (pause), five- thousand."

50 uth 8-10267 say "South eight (pause), one- oh-two-+six-seven."

If you should hear the operator pass your call to another operator incorrectly, say "No" and give the number again.

If you are calling from a party line message rate station, announce the let- ter of your station, if there is one, after giving the number as above. Example, "Worth two (pause), five thousand, this is "J" calling."

Ringing and Busy Signals

In a short time you should, in most cases, hear either the ringing signal, an intermittent bur-rr-ing sound accompany- ing the ringing of the bell, or the busy signal, a rapid buzz-buzz-buzz (quicker and louder than the ringing signal). If you hear the busy signal, just hang up your receiver without waiting for a re- port from the operator. If you hear the ringing signal, give the called party suf- ficient time to answer, before abandoning

the call. Make the call again a little later, if the connection is still desired.

There will be no charge unless an answer is obtained from a subscriber's telephone.

Where these audible signals are not provided, reports will be given by the operator.

Other clicking sounds or tones may occasionally be heard. Such sounds, however, are incidental to the operator's work and should be disregarded.

To Call Back the Operator

When it is necessary to call back the operator, move the receiver hook up and down slowly three or four times.

Moving the receiver hook causes a light to flash on the operator's switch- board. If you jiggle the hook rapidly, the light will not burn long enough to attract the operator's attention.

Criticisms of Service

Operators are required to be courteous in their dealings with customers but are not expected to engage in conversation beyond that necessary to complete con- nections.
