ITS OFFICERS OF CULTURE, THE PRIDE OF COM PANY IL.

By Watson C. McNall.

Company II, was recruited from Niagara Co. Well do I re- member the stirring times of life and drum, and war meetings held in all the small towns and school houses. Patriotic speeches were made, and offers to care for the families of the married men who would enlist; also the town and county offered a bounty to all who would enlist ..

I recall most vividly the meeting at Royalton Center the night I enlisted. It was large and enthusiastic, addressed by the County Judge, and prominent lawyers and ministers. How proudly we marched up and signed our names for three years or during the war. Naturally we were all anxious to secure the Indred men necessary for a full company. We had a reernit- ing office in Lockport. I remember one man who, while he wanted to enlist said he was to old. But I got a horse and buggy and went to his home at Pendleton Center, took him to a barber shop in Lockport, where he was shaved, hair ent and colored, and he was accepted by the examining surgeon.

We went into camp, located on the Fair grounds, called Camp Cimreh. Here all the companies were sent as fast as recruited from our senatorial district.

It was great fun playing soldier there, okl broken muskets, some without lock or stock, to do guard duty. Of course all, even the officers were green and inexperienced.

On our way to Baltimore, we received our guns and accon- tramments at Elmira.

We think we were exceptional in the formation of Co. II, for we had as officers, three college graduates. C. P. Clark, captain, S. S. Wilcox, Ist lieutenant, L. T. Foote, 2nd. lientenant.

Sergeant Co. H.

SERGEANT McNALL. Showing a part of the equipment, which was burdensome on a long march.

Before we left Baltimore, Captain Clark resigned, and S. S. Wilcox, was promoted Captain, with 1. T. Foote, first lieutenant.

We left Baltimore in "light marching orders," but we never went back, instead we landed at Harpers Ferry, then more and harder soldier life began. No more company cooks or soft bread, but hard tack and if we had coffee, made it ourselves, which was not pleasant, coffee was the main stay for the soldier on the long march, or in the field. Nothing of importance except plenty of fighting, and long hard marches occurred to Co. II, through the summer of '63, until the fall campaign, when Capt. Wilcox, and several others of the company were killed at the battle of Mine Rum. During the winter of 1864, Chaplain Buck resigned, and Lt. Foote was promoted Chaplain of the regiment, and held that rank until mustered ont. He was a man loved by all of the regiment. Kindly, loyal, over ready to respond to calls of need, to minister to the injured or dying, in short a Christian Gentleman.
