K ISSICK'S
WELL-KNOWN BUSINESS COLLEGE
.-.
.. ..
HE best in Brooklyn for thorough instruction and training of Young Men and Women for Business-day or evening. The Institution occupies the entire College Building, lighted on all sides, in a select and central neighborhood.
...... 45 to 51 ASHLAND PLACE, Formerly Raymond Street,
Between Fulton and DeKalb Avenues, seventh house from Fulton, and convenient to all the lines of cars on Fulton Street, also to Third, Fifth, Seventh, Atlantic and Flatbush Avenues. The Long Island Railroad Depot and the Kings County Elevated Stations (Lafayette and Flatbush Avenues), each two short blocks from the College. The Crosstown, Myrtle and Vanderbilt Avenue cars are also convenient, and now, by means of the transfer system, we are convenient to all parts of Brooklyn and Long Island.
THE COMMERCIAL COURSE in this Institution includes any branch required to prepare the pupils thoroughly for Business. Spelling, plain, rapid Business Writing, Arithmetic, Correspondence, Business Forms, Book-keeping, etc., are the studies to which we give special and undivided attention. Day or evening. TERMS : Per quarter-Day, $20 ; Evening, $15 Per year-Day, 60 ; Evening, 45
THE BOOK-KEEPING is thoroughly taught by expert practical Book-keepers. The terms Dr. and Cr. are fully explained ; the nature of entries defined, and journalizing elucidated, Ledger Titles, closing and opening books, balance sheets fully taught until the learner is enabled to grasp the subject as a con- nected whole.
EVENING SESSION. For the benefit of those who may be unable to attend during the day we hold an evening session from 7 to 9 o'clock. None too backward or too old to learn, as each student will be instructed separately or privately.
-- .
PENMANSHIP is taught by the Principal and his assistants. In removing Stiff- ness, Trembling of the Hand, and in making Good, Plain, Rapid, Graceful, Off-Hand Business Writers (Muscular Movement), they stand pre-eminent. $8 per term; 25 lessons, $5.
COMMERCIAL ARITHMETIC embraces a complete knowledge of all the essential parts of Arithmetic.
WE ARE OFTEN ASKED, "What is required of those who want a thorough, practical business education ? "
WOULD SAY: A desire to learn with perseverance, and the quality of hold- ing on till the desired object is gained. Students with such qualifications can better their condition by being instructed and judiciously trained by competent, experienced gentlemen.
PREPARATORY DEPARTMENT. Where a thorough, liberal education can be had to prepare those who are not sufficiently advanced to enter the Commercial.
SEPARATE INSTRUCTION will be GIVEN TO THOSE WHO ARE BACKWARD, or whose early education has been neglected. .
IN NO OTHER place is the comfort of the pupil more studied, and his moral training better attended to.
LETTER WRITING. This accomplishment has been so much neglected in our Seminaries, that it is rare to find a pupil who is capable of composing even a tolerable letter. But by our system the student is taught how to express his thoughts clearly and concisely with daily practice. To the diligent scholar we assure the ability to compose a letter that may be the means of bettering his condition or opening his way to prosperity, and reflect credit on himself and his teachers.
YOUNG MEN AND WOMEN would learn Book-keeping, Stenography and Typewriting, if they knew how we could aid them by securing lucrative employment (free of charge).
YOUNG MEN proposing to enter any College or Theological Seminary, to engage in any of the learned professions can receive thorough instruction ; also Ladies and Gentlemen prepared for examination as teachers, etc.
LADIES' DEPARTMENTS. Separate apartments for Ladies and Misses, where they receive the same thorough instruction as gentlemen, in English, Commercial, Languages, Shorthand, Typewriting, etc.
THE BEST PLACE to learn Stenography is where they give thorough, separate instruction, and the services of an experienced, competent teacher to each pupil one hour every lesson. That can be found in Kissick's Business College only.
PHONOGRAPHY. Young Men and Women taught practically Shorthand Writing, fitting them for verbatim Reporting-one of the most lucrative pro- fessions of the age. Six practical Stenographers constantly employed by us day and evening. We guarantee to make thorough competent Reporters. Class, $8; separately, $15 per term.
----...
-----
THOSE WHO WISH TO BE SUCCESSFUL in Phonography require a fair knowledge of English ; especially to be good in SPELLING. The more liberal the education the better ; but if any persons come to us deficient, they can have instruction till they become sufficiently intelligent and fully fitted to learn Shorthand that will enable them to procure good positions that pay well. Phonography can be learned thoroughly and practically in 80 lessons. Speed from 100 to 150 per minute by our method of separate instruction (no failures).
TYPEWRITING. There is a special demand for Stenographers who can tran- scribe their Shorthand notes on the Type-writer. The demand for good operators is constantly increasing.
$10 per term.
DEPORTMEN'T. The discipline of the Institution is mild, but effective. We rule by love, and not by fear. The Principal and his assistants appeal to the student's sense of gentlemanly propriety and behavior; yet prompt and cheer- ful obedience will be insisted upon, and no insubordinate person will be retained in the College.
THE ENGLISH COURSE consists of Reading, Writing, Spelling, Grammar, Composition, Arithmetic and Letter Writing. Merchants and business men will agree with us, when we say that besides Penmanship, Arithmetic, Busi- ness Forms and Book-keeping-important as these unquestionably are-there are other things, without a knowledge of which, a good business education cannot be considered as complete. Among these we would particularly men- tion correct Spelling, Punctuation, and a sufficient acquaintance with the rules of Grammar and Composition to enable the student to compose either a good letter, business card or advertisement. For the acquisition of these accomplishments the ambitious student will find in our Institution the most ample facilities.
