[ From the Union of March 1, 1884.]

A YEAR'S ACHIEVEMENT.

The first year of THE UNION under its new management closes to-day. On the first Monday of last March a transformation was effected in the conduct and character of THE UNION-ARGUS, which placed it before the Brooklyn public as, virtually, a new candidate for their favor. That the reconstructed UNION has not disappointed public expectation has been shown in the extraordinary develop- ment of its circulation and advertising within the last twelve months. Progress so rapid and so well sustained is almost unique in newspaper history, and its continuance for another year will result in placing THE UNION among the foremost newspapers in the country.

These results have not been attained without well-directed enter- prise and a liberal expenditure of capital. They cannot be ex- panded and developed without continued recourse to the same agencies. The press facilities of THE UNION have been taxed to their utmost long before the time when such a contingency could have been reasonably looked for, and at the present moment the only obstacle to the rapid increase of its circulation is the difficulty of supplying the demands of news-dealers with sufficient promptitude. The very elaborate and efficient double press, which Messrs. R. Hoe & Co. are engaged in making for THE UNION, will hardly be ready for use till the end of next summer, but nothing will be left undone to push the work forward.

The expansion of the press facilities of THE UNION will involve a considerable enlargement of its size, and various notable im- provements in its form. Marvelous as has been its progress during the first year of its new management, its second may, therefore, be expected to show a rate of progress even more surprising. Our friends may be assured that the efforts by which success has already been achieved will be directed in the future to making THE UNION in all its departments a still better newspaper. In journalism, standing still means retrogression, and we are as well aware as our most exacting critics can be, that a great deal remains to be done to make THE UNION in all respects worthy of its constituency. A more intelligent, critical and discriminating pub- lic than the newspaper readers of Brooklyn it would be hard to find in the country, and to that constituency, without distinction of age or sex, THE UNION addresses itself. It is only a question of time, and not a very long time at that, when the majority of this constituency will be numbered among its readers.
