To-day's issue of THE UNION will be recognized by every reader as a new departure in evening journalism. We submit in the full con- fidence that the people of Brooklyn will promptly recognize the superiority of this new form to the old-fashioned "blanket sheet," alike in symmetry, convenience and legibility. The time is not far distant when the unwieldy folio size will be as generally discarded by evening newspapers as by their morning contemporaries, and most of the readers of THE UNION will. after inspecting to-day's issue, wonder why a change so obviously in the right direction should have been so long delayed. It is very largely to their lack of enterprise in adapt- ing themselves to the wants of the public that evening newspapers wield less influence than the morning press, and nothing has been so characteristic of their deficiency in the elements of progress as the unattractive character of their typographical make-up and the incon- venient amplitude of their form.

In leading the coming revolution in evening journalism in the Metropolitan district, THE UNION demonstrates to the country the pre-eminence of the afternoon press of Brooklyn over that of New York, and the superiority of its own enterprise to that of its local contemporaries. The change represents more than meets the eye of the casual reader, for it is identified with the perfection of a printing machine as marvelous as it is unique. It is a recognized fact that an evening newspaper is handicapped by the necessity of stereotyping, the 20 or 30 minutes consumed in that process being invaluable at the hour of going to press. But it has hitherto been found impos- sible to publish a large edition in a short space of time without the use of stereotype plates. THE UNION press represents the first successful attempt to print from type at such a rate of speed as will ensure the delivery in one hour of 24,000 copies of eight pages, cut, pasted and folded. The ease with which the latest news can be covered, when there is no tedious casting of plates to be gone through, is as obvious as the celerity with which " extras " can be produced or postscripts added when occasion arises. These and other advantages of such a machine as that on which THE UNION is now printed are well known to every publisher, and will be fully appreciated by the people of Brooklyn after opportunity has been afforded for their practical illustration.

THE UNION takes its place at the head of the line of evening journals with entire confidence in its ability to make its superiority in other respects as well marked as in its mechanical facilities for prompt production in a readable and easy handled form. For the measure of support which THE UNION has already obtained, its best thanks are tendered alike to its numerous friends and its not incon- siderable number of enemies. What the former may have failed to do in recommending it to public approval has been quite effectively done by the latter. Happy in the possession of both aids to the suc- cess of a newspaper, it trusts that neither will relax their efforts. For themselves, its conductors can only say that they will take the readiest way to command success-by deserving it.
