Part 1 | Part 2

The pastor then propounds to the candidates the

Confession of Faith.

You believe that there is but one living and true God; infinite in wisdom, power, holiness, justice, good- ness, and truth; the Creator, the Preserver, and the Governor of all worlds and creatures ; existing in three persons-the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit- equal in power and glory.

You believe that the Scriptures of the Old and the New Testaments are a revelation from God, the only

1

19

one to be expected, and containing a perfect rule of faith and practice.

You believe that our first parents were created holy ; that, by sinning against God, they incurred his right- cous displeasure, and thus brought sinfulness and death upon themselves and all their posterity.

You believe that God, in infinite mercy, and in ac- cordance with his wise and eternal counsels of redeem- ing love, has provided a way of salvation, through the mediation and death of his Son, Jesus Christ, "who is over all, God blessed for ever; " the only Saviour from everlasting punishment ; and both able and will- ing to save all who repent and believe in him.

You believe that, in order to become partakers in the benefits of Christ's death, we must trust in him alone as our Saviour, love and serve God with all our heart and strength ; hate and forsake sin, and walk in the ways of holiness, even to the end of life : but that we are naturally so averse to holiness, and in love with sin, that none ever do turn and live, unless by the special influences of the Holy Spirit.

You believe that, at the end of the world, there will be a general resurrection of the dead, and a day of final judgment for all mankind ; that the Lord Jesus Christ will then sit on the throne of judgment; that he will condemn the finally impenitent and unbelieving to endless misery ; and receive the righteous into his heavenly kingdom, to enjoy everlasting happiness and glory.

The candidates having signified their assent to this summary of Christian doctrine, the pastor then pro- pounds the

20

Covenant.

You do now, in the presence of the all-seeing God, the holy angels, and this assembly, cheerfully avouch JEHOVAH-the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit- to be your God, your Father, your Redeemer, your Sanctifier, and your Portion.

You take the Scriptures of the Old and the New Testaments to be the rule of your conduct, and the measure of your faith.

You do now renounce the world, the flesh, and the devil, and sincerely embrace the Lord Jesus Christ, as the object of your supreme love and unwavering faith.

You profess it to be the purpose of your heart, to live a holy, humble, and devout life ; to keep the Lord's day holy ; strictly to observe closet, family, and public worship; to seek, by all practicable means, the con- version of your fellow-sinners to Christ; and hence- forth to devote yourselves and all that you have, with- out reserve, to the service of your Redeemer.

[If any are received by certificate, they now rise in their places, to avow their adoption of the following article of the covenant :]

You do likewise covenant, that you will submit to the order and discipline of this church of Christ; that you will kindly give and receive admonition ; and that you will, in all things, treat your brethren with that tenderness and fidelity, which become the disciples of Christ and children of the same household.

Do you thus, cach for yourself, solemnly covenant with God and his people ?

[If any have not been already baptized, either in in- fancy, or afterwards, that sacrament is now admin- istered to them. After which, the church rise, and

.

the pastor proceeds to address the candidates as fol- lows :]

In consequence of these professions, we affectionately receive you as members of this church ; and invite you to unite with us, this day, in the celebration of the Supper of the Lord. We welcome you to a fellowship with us in all the privileges and duties of the gospel; .and engage, on our part, to watch over you and seek your edification and growth in grace, until you shall be removed by certificate or death.

The church now resume their seats, and the pastor addresses the candidates in the following, or like, words of

Exhortation.

And now, dearly beloved ! remember that the vows of God are upon you. You have stood before the Lord to enter into covenant with your God. By your own act, you have this day laid yourselves under solemn and eternal obligations, to be devoted to him in body, soul, and spirit ; you have renounced the world and its vanities as your portion. Your feet are henceforth to tread in the narrow path ; your affec- tions are to rise, and centre upon God and the glories of his holiness ; forgetting the things which are behind and reaching forth unto those things which are before, you are to press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Let this day be often present to your view. Let the solemn vows, which you have now made, and which can never be recalled, be subjects of frequent meditation and prayer. Guard every avenue to temptation. Be not conformed to this world; love not the world, neither the things that are in the world; it is death to the soul ; go not

after it. Abstain from all appearance of evil. Enter with all your heart into the work of benevolence. Labor to turn many to righteousness. Pray without ceasing. Be careful to enter your closet, at least every morning and evening, to pray in secret to Him who has promised to hear your secret prayer. I charge you-FORGET NOT YOUR CLOSET. Be not con- tent with the ordinary attainments of your fellow- Christians. Give diligence to make your calling and election sure. Be rooted and grounded in love ; that ye may be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height, and to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye may be filled with all the fullness of God.

And now may the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob keep you, until you are gathered to the mar- riage-supper of the Lamb, where the ransomed from every nation, tribe, and kindred are the guests, and Jesus, in person, is Master and Lord. And, that you may feast for ever there on the rich bounties of his love, may grace, mercy, and peace be multiplied unto you, from God our Father, and Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer is then offered ; and, the candidates having retired to their seats, the cloth is removed, praise follows, and the pastor reads a portion of Scrip- ture, exhorts the communicants to a worthy re- membrance of their crucified and risen Redeemer, and then administers the supper after the example of our Lord, as related in the New Testament.

Members of the congregation and others, who wish to witness the celebration of the Lord's Supper, are desired to occupy the seats not appropriated to the communicants. The service is public, and of peculiar

23

edification to others, as well as to communicants. Their presence is always desired.

4. Removals.

Membership in this church can be terminated only in one of these three ways :

1. By Death.

2. By a Process of Discipline.

3. By Transfer to some other church.

When a member of the church removes, and takes up his residence permanently, where it is either im- practicable, or greatly inconvenient, to attend with regularity and punctuality on the stated services of public worship, it becomes his duty to apply to the Pastor, or the Clerk of the Session, for a letter of recommendation to some sister church in his neighbor- hood. The same course is to be pursued, if he desires to connect himself with some other denomination of Christians. He does not cease, however, to be subject to the discipline of this church, until he has been fully received by certificate elsewhere.

"If a church-member," says the " Discipline," XI. 4, "have been more than two years absent from the place of his ordinary residence and ecclesiastical con- nections, if he apply for a certificate of member- ship, his absence, and the ignorance of the church re- specting his demeanor for that time, shall be distinctly stated in the certificate."

No certificate can be given after a process of disci- pline has been commenced with the applicant; nor for the purpose of releasing a church-member from his covenant-engagements. The certificate must specify the church to which the transfer is to be made ; from

24

which church a certificate of transfer is to be returned to the Session, whose watch and care will then be ter- minated.

5. Counsel to the Church.

1. Be much in prayer. It is the Christian's life.

(1.) Secret Prayer. Have a closet, and seek it every morning and evening, for private devotion.

. Suffer no omission.

(2.) Family Prayer. Have an altar in your house. Call your household together at the beginning and end of the day, read the Scriptures, sing, if you can, and pray. Neglect it not.

(3.) Social Prayer. Meetings for prayer are indis- pensable to the vigorous life of the Church. Sustain them by your unfailing attendance. Be ready to participate in the exercises-the brethren in the presence of all, and the sisters in the female prayer-meeting. It will add greatly to your enjoyment and usefulness.

2. Be regular and punctual in your devotions. Let the seasons for private, family, social, and public worship be sacred. Make no engagements to inter- fere with them. Be always in your place, on the Sabbath, at church; and at the stated evening meetings of the congregation.

3. Be prepared for all weathers-hot, and cold, and stormy-so as not to be kept from the house of God, by rain or snow, or any thing of the kind.

4. Be active in advancing the welfare of the Church. Learn what is expected of you-and do it. You may be a Sunday-School Teacher, a Tract Visitor, a helper in various ways. You may do much in bringing others to the house of God-in leading children to the Sunday-School, and persuading your

25

friends and neighbours to become Christians. Be useful. Live to do good.

5. Bear your full share of the burdens of the Church. It costs something to sustain public worship; to conduct a Sunday-School, or a Mission-School; to supply the wants of the poor; to carry forward the work of church extension, and to evangelize the world. Do your part. Give freely as God prospers . you. You will be the gainer by it. _ Is you sow, you shall reap.

6. Be exemplary before your family, and in your daily business. Let no one have occasion to doubt your piety, or to reproach religion on your account. Grow in grace. Guard against declension. "Go forward."

6. Test Questions.

1. Have I been renewed in spirit and temper ?

2. Have I ceased from every sinful indulgence ?

3. Do I count all things but loss for Christ ?

4. Do I conscientiously perform every known duty ?

5. Do I live daily to the glory of God ?

6. Do I hate sin and love holiness more than all things else ?

7. Do I cordially love all who love Christ ?

8. Do I take Christ for my pattern ?

9. Am I governed in all things by the teachings of the Bible ?

10. Is the worship of God my delight ?

11. Am I growing in grace, day by day, and year by year ?

12. Have I made my calling and election sure ? 3 -

26

TAKE NOTICE.

1. Let your pastor know where you live. If you change your residence, or remove from the city, inform him.

2. In sickness, if you desire to see your pastor, send. for him. Delay not till the last hour.

3. In, funerals, consult your pastor before appointing the hour. He may, else, not be able to sorve you.

4. In marriages, give him timely notice ; and avoid the Sabbath, and church-evenings, for the perform- ance of the ceremony.

5. If you change your name, as is customary with females when they marry, let your pastor know whom you have married, if he should not officiate on the occasion.

6. If a member of the church is removed by death, and your pastor is not likely to know it, inform him, of the time, the place, and the cause, as well as the name.

7. In seeking an interview with your pastor, call ordi- narily after 5 o'clock P.M.
