How the Public Profits By Telephone Improvements

Here is a big fact in the telephone progress of this country:

Original Bell Telephone 1876

Standard Bell Telephone To-dity

Early Telephone Exchange

Typical Present-day Exchange

If City Wires Were Carried Overhead, 10 Poles of 20 Cross Arms Each Would be Required

1800 Wires in an Underground Cable Less Than Three Inches in Diameter

Hand in hand with inventions and developments which have improved the service many fold have come operating economies that have greatly cut its cost.

To appreciate these betterments and their resulting . economies, consider a few examples :

Your present telephone instrument had seventy- two ancestors; it is better and cheaper than any of them.

Time was when a switchboard required a room full of boys to handle the calls of a few hundred subscribers. Today, two or three girls will serve a greater number without confusion and very much more promptly.

An underground cable less than three inches in diameter now carries as many as eighteen hundred wires. If strung in the old way, these would require ten sets of poles, each with twenty cross arms-a congestion utterly prohibitive in city streets.

These are some of the familar improvements. They have saved tens of millions of dollars. But those which have had the most radical effect, resulting in the largest economies and putting the telephone within everyone's reach, are too technical to describe here. And their value can no more be estimated than can the value of the invention of the automobile.'

This progress in economy, as well as in service, has given the United States the Bell System with about. ten times as many telephones, proportionate to. the population, as in all Europe.

GENERAL NOTICES for the Information of Telephone Users

TELEPHONE DIRECTORIES

The New York City Telephone Directory is issued three times a year, in February, May and October; and contains the listings of subscribers in all boroughs of New York City.

For listings of subscribers in nearby cities, towns and sub- urbs, consult the Suburban Directory.

This Directory is the property of the New York Telephone Company. It is furnished free of cost to subscribers and must be surrendered to the carrier who delivers the next subsequent edition.

Many call numbers are changed and new numbers listed in every issue of the directory. It is for subscribers' own interest as well as that of the Telephone Company, that all old directories are collected. 'as the use of obsolete telephone books results in wrong number calls, which are an annoyance to both subscribers and the Company.

The Company assumes no liability for damages arising from errors or omissions in the making up or printing of the Directory, nor can it guarantee the permanency of call numbers assigned or to be assigned. Subscribers are, therefore, advised not to print telephone numbers on stationery, etc .. but to use the phrase "Telephone Connection."

.

HOW TO USE THE TELEPHONE

· Speak directly into the monthpiece with your lips close to it. Speak distinctly and deliberately.

Obtain telephone numbers from the Telephone Directories. Call- ing numbers from memory, or taking them from cards, letterheads, etc., often results in wrong number connections and delays.

If the number is not found in the Directory, call "Information." Calls for information are free of charge.

When giving a number to the operator, state -- (1) the name of the central office wanted, (2) each figure of the telephone number, and (3) the party line letter, if there is one. Numbers which are even hundreds or even thousands should be given as such, instead of each figure being given separately.

Examples:

John 1253 "John, one-two-five-three" Main 125-J "Main, one-two-five, Party J" Broad 4800 "Broad, four-eight-hundred" Worth 5000 "Worth, five-thousand"

If you are calling from a party line station, announce the letter of your station, after giving the call as above.

Example: "This is party J calling."

After giving the number, listen to the operator as she repeats it. If she repeats the number correctly, say, "Yes" or "Right." If she does not repeat the number correctly, say "No" and give the number again.

After calling a number, remain with the receiver at your ear until the called number answers or until you receive a definite report. When the called number answers, announce first the name of the person to whom you wish to talk and then your own name or the name of your firm.

Answer telephone calls promptly in order to avoid a report of "don't answer" being given.

When answering calls, announce your name or the name of your firm. To call back the operator, move the receiver hook up and down slowly.

Do not hang up the receiver until you are ready for the operator to take down the connection.

When you are not using the telephone, see that the receiver is on the hook, large end down.

QUESTIONS AND COMPLAINTS

Operators are not supposed to answer questions or to engage in conversation beyond that necessary to complete connections. A subscriber who wishes to ask a question should first call for " Information. "

Any complaint should be telephoned, not written. Ask the operator for the "Traffic Manager .. "

CLASSES OF TELEPHONE CALLS

There are three broad classes of telephone calls, viz : L. Local Calls.

2. Two-Number Toll Calls.

3. Particular-Person Toll Calls.

A Local Call is one to any telephone located within the same local service area.

A Two-Number Toll Call is one made by number for a telephone located outside the local service area and at a point to which there is a two-number toll rate. Charge is made if connection is com- pleted with the number called, the time for which the charge is made beginning when the number called first answers. More rapid service can be given, and in general a lower rate is charged, on two- number toll calls than on particular-person toll calls.

A Particular-Person Toll Call is one made by name for a per- son reached through a telephone which is located outside the local ser- ce area and at a point to which there is a particular-person toll cate.
