When answering calls, announce your name or the name of your firm.


To call back the operator, move the receiver book up and down slowly.

Operatore are required to be courteous in their dealings with subscribers but are not expected to en- gaga in conversation beyond that necessary to com- plete connections.

The above classes of telephone calls ore free of charge. .


CLASSES OF TELEPHONE CALLS


There are three broad classes of telephone calls, via:


1. Local Calls.


2. Two-Number Toll Calls. 1. Particular-Parson Toll Calla.


A. Local Cell is one to any telophono located within the sams local service area.


A Two-Number Tell Cell Is one made by number for a telephone located outalda the local service area and et a point to which there le a two-number toll rate. Charge is made if connection le completed with the number called, the time for which the charge in made beginning when the number called fret an- swers. More rapid service can be given, and ia gen- oral a lower rate le chargod, on two-number toll calls than on particular-person toll calls.


A Particular-Person Toil Cell le ono made by nome for a person reached through a telephone which le located outside the local service arse and et a point to which there le a particular-person tonl rate. REGULATIONS GOVERNING LOCAL CALLS


Local Celle should be made by number except on calle made for the purpose of filing tolograma and on certain emergency calls, ee hereinafter shown.


Messenger Calle-Messenger. service will not be arranged for by the Telephone Company on local calls, for the purpose of calling to a given telephone, persona having no telephone. It le sometimes pos- sihle for calling subscribere to arrange for messen- ger service through publio telephone agenta located In the district called. In such a case, the calling sub- ecriber choold ask for "Information" and give her the address of the person desired. If the information records show a pubilo telephone In that neighborhood, the calling subscriber will be given the number of that telephone. The calling cohscriber must then make the necessary arrangements with the agent at the called etation for the messenger service and for payment therefor. The Telephone Company assumes no responsibility for the messenger service rendered and will not bill the charge for such service against the calling subscriber'e telephone. The regular charge will be made for the telephone connection to the called station, and If a retorn call le made from the called station, It will be charged to that etation. Callect Cells- The collection of telephone charges from the called station will not be permitted on local calle.


OVERTIME CHARGES ON LOCAL MESSAGES


In accordance with contract and tariff provisione a "local message" la a connection on a local call five minutes or less In duration. Although it Is not the Company'e general practice to time all local messages os It is to time all toll messages, overtime charges will be applied whenever local. messages from public

REGULATIONS GOVERNING TWO-NUMBER TOLL CALLS


Two-Number Toll Calle mnet be made by number in the same manner as local calls. When a two-num. ber toll connection le desired, give the number to the firet operator who anewers, and remain with the telephone receiver ot the ser until the called number answers or until the operator raporte. If the call is given to the operator hy number It will be handled as a two-number call.


Messenger Calls-Messenger service will not be arranged for 'hy the Telephone Company on two- number toll calle for the purpose of calling to a gives tolephone, persona having no telephone connection. REGULATIONS GOVERNING PARTICULAR-PERSON TOLL CALLS


To meke e particular-person toll call, or to secure Information concerning the rates on such calls, tall the operator whe Arst answers your call, the name of the city, town or locality in which the person with whom you wish to talk is located. The operator will connect you with a Toll or Long Distance op- erator who will identify herself hy answering "Toll Operator" or "Long Distance." When the Toll or Long Distance operator onewere, giva ber the fol- lowing detalla:


The telephone number from which the' call in mado and your name, if you desire to give your name.


The number of the telophone desired, If known. The firm name or the name and' Initiale of the person under whose name the telephone Me lleted and the street address, ff the telepho number is|not known.


The name of the person with whom you wish to epes.ic.


The name of the allernate person. If you are willing to |talc with anyone mise In oise the person desired cannot be reached.


The name of the city or town and state in which the person desired is located.


Listen for the operalor to repeat the detalle of your call and remain at the telephone until che dicales that you may hang up the receiver.


Messengar Colis -- When necessary, a messenger will be sent to the address of the person destred re- questing him to come to a telaphone, provided the calling subscriber quarantoes payment for the messengor service. Tho exact amount disbursed for messeoger service will be charged in addition to ! charge for the telephone connection and will be in cluded in the bilt for toll service against the calling telepbone.


Collect Celle-Upon the request of the calling sub- scriber, the charges on a particolar-person toll call Including messenger charges, will be collected from the called stati n. If such chargse are socepted the person called. Requests to have the chars collected in this way must be made when the out given to the toll operator.


Appointment Calle An appointment to talk et @ specified time may be made by notifying the toll operator of the time at which the connection is de- sired. No extra charge will be made for appoint- ment calle (except for any messenger service which may be Involved), but the Company cannot guaran- tes the completion of the connection at the exact time epacifed.


Leave Word Cells-If the person desired Is not immediately reached at the telephone called, the Operator will, at the request of the calling subscri- ber, leave word (without charge) to have him call wben ready to talk. On Leave Word Calle & mse- sags will be left at the called station for the person desired to call a particular toll operator: for ex- ampie: "Philadelphia Operator." When the person receiving such a message is ready to talk, he should ask the firet operator who answers to connect bim with the toll operator mentioned in the message.


Retes-Tbe more important pointe to which par- ticular-person toll calle may be made will be found In rata tables In talephone directories.


Reports-In case there Is delay In completing a call, the toll operator will advise the calling sub- seriber, at euftahis Intervals, regarding the cause of the delay.


Request for Charges-If anyone calling from a regular subscriber'e etation (not a public telephone) wishes to be notified of the amount of the charges on his call, be will save time by requesting this Information at. the time he gives his call to the toll operetor. If the request for euch Information is [ not made until the completion of the conversation, unavoidable delay may result while the operator ob- tains the rate and computes the charges.


SUPERVISION OF TOLL CALLS BY PRIVATE BRANCH EXCHANGE ATTENDANTS

FREE CALLS


Calls from any telephone in the Metropolitan Divi- von may be made to any Department of the Tele- phone Company In that Division without charge.


The Metropolitan Division Includes the Ave Bor- oughe of the City of New York-Manhattan, The Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Richmond (Staten leland), the New York Counties of Nassau, Suffolk (Long Island), Westchester, Puinam, Rockland, the towne of Tuxedo and Greenwood Lake In Orange County and Greenwich, Conn .; also the New Jersey Coonties of Bergen, Essex, Hudson. Middlesex, Mon- mooth, Morris, Passalo, Somerset, Union and a part or Ocean County.


' POLICEMEN and FIREMEN will be allowed Free Local Service, provided that at the time' the con- nection is asked for the policeman or freman mak- ing the call gives the operator bis badge number And states that the call le made in the performance of hie ofcial dutise, as follows:


(1) From any Puhllo Telephone In the Boroughs of Manhattan and The Bronx to any other etation In these Boroughl.


(2) From any Publio Telephone In the Boroughe of Brooklyn, Queens and Richmond to any other etation is the Borough from which the call is made.


On all free calls made from coin box etetions, the coin deposited In order to call the operator will be returned.


TELEGRAM'S BY TELEPHONE-" Call by NAME


To facilitate sending telegrama and cablegrama, patrons should call by name for the Western Union Telegraph Company, or the Postal Telegraph-Cable Company.


To send a Western Union tolegram or cablegram, call "Western Union." To send . Postal talogram or cablegram, call "Postal."


In either case you will be connected with an office of the designated telegraph company located within your local calling ares, if there le euch an officer


If there le no such office within your local calling tres, or If the office is closed at the time you call, and it is necessary for you to be connected with a telegraph office located outside of your local calling area, the operator will advise you of The telephone toll abarge to that office and upon your approval will bomplate the call


Telephone charges Incurred as sbwve for local or toll calls from subscribers' stationit will appear on regular monthly bills. Charges for such calle from publlo telephones will be collected et poblle telephono stetions in the usual manner.

ATTACHMENTS TO TELEPHONES


Telephone instruments have been designed to pro- duce the best results and are,! necessarily, very sensitive and intricate. The various unauthorized devices offered for sale and which are supposed to Improve transmission, eliminate ' noise, destroy germa, supplant the telephone directory, etc., are unnecessary. Many of them get the telephone lines and Ibetrumenta out of order and the Company, to protect Ita service, is compelled to remove them. Subscribers' contracts provide that no instrument or appliance not furnished by the Company shall be attached to or used in connection with Ite instru- menta or lines.


INJURING TELEPHONE PROPERTY


Any person who wilfully of malleloudly displaces, removes, injures, or destroys o line of telegraph or telephone, wire or cable, pier or abutant, or the material or property belonging thereto, withont low- ful authority, or who shall unlawfully and wilfully cut, break, tap, ar maka connection. with any tala- graph or telephone line, wire, cable of Instrument, or read or copy In any unauthorized manner any message, communication or report passing over It, In this state; or who shall wilfully prevent, obstruct or delay by any means or contrivance whatsoever, The sending, transmission, conveyance of delivery. in this state, of any authorized message, communi- cation or report by or Through any telegraph or tele- nhone line, wirs or cable, under the control of any telegraph or telephone company doing business In "this state: or who shall ald, agree with, employ or conspire with any person or persons to unlawfully do, or permit or cause to be done, any of the acte

SUSPENSION OF RESIDENCE SERVICE


When a residence is to be closed for any conald- arahle period, the telephone service may be tem- porarily euspeoded without termination of contract or removal of telephone instromenta, and under certain conditions, If arranged for by written notification in advance, a partial allowance will be made for . period not exceeding four months In any contrast year; the allowance for suspended service on party linse will be mads for only one (1) period of four monthe or less in any contract year. Billa will be rendered regularly while service is suspended, und tha total allowance credited to subscriber when eervice le resumed, This suspended service dopa not apply la business telephones. It applies to real-" dence telephones, and le offered as a convenience when water! electricity, gas. etc., are also being nout off, and the residence left without a caretaker. REQUEST TO SEND A MESSENGER


Public Telephone Agents, on a request from the Toll Operator to send for any person, should endeavor to secure messenger service at as low a figure as possible, and in all cases should notify the Toll Op- erator of the charge, and receive her approval of the amount before sending the messenger,


The Public Telephone Agent should transmit the messenger's report to the Toll Operator .e soon as the messenger returns.
