street, and 403 feet from Varick to Hudson-street. It! area contains four acres.
WASHINGTON SQUARE,
Is the first of the series of open squares laid ou within the last seven years, in the upper part of the City. It is distant 1} miles north-west of the presen City Hall; lying between Wooster and Macdouga streets, from E. to W., and between Fourth-stree and Waverley-place, fromn S. to N. Its length is 951 feet ; its breadth, 447 feet; its area, 9} acres. Abou two-thirds of its area, until the year 1827, constituted the old Potter's Field, and belonged to the City. The residue of the lands, lying within its presest limits, were in that year, taken from individual proprietors, at an ex pense of $77,946 42; the whole of which was assesse upon and paid by the owners of the adjacent lands. Ii 1828, the city enclosed the square with a wooden fence the expense of which, $2,876 28, was paid out of the Cit Treasury. During the present year, 1833, a range o superb private residences has been erected on the nort! side of the square, and the name of the street, on th petition of the owners of those buildings, changed fror Sixth-street to "Waverley-place," in honour of Si Walter Scott. A street, 75 feet wide, called "Wash ington-place," (formerly Fifth-street,) leads from Broad way to the middle of the square; at the terminatio: of which the site of the University of the City of New York has been fixed.
UNION PLACE,
Situated at the former junction, or "fork," of th Bowery and Broadway, distant 12 miles north of th present City Hall, was originally laid out by the com missioners who devised the plan of the upper part of th City, in an oblique and irregular form, comprehendin, the narrow strip of land lying between Broadway an the Bowery, extending as far south as Tenth-street ; an subsequently reduced so as to include only the triangl

r point of land lying north of Fourteenth-street. Upon he petition of the proprietors of lands in that vicinity, he Legislature, in the year 1832, passed an act greatly iltering and enlarging the form and dimensions of this square; so that Union-place now forms a spacious rectangular square, embracing (in addition to its former imits, north of Fourteenth-street) a large triangle on he east, carved out of the " Bowery Hill," and another arge triangle lying west of the present Broadway or Bloomingdale Road. The whole of the land was taken rom individual proprietors, at an expense of $213,516, which was assessed upon and paid by the owners of ands in the immediate vicinity.
Its length, N. to S., from Fourteenth to Seventeenth- street, is 877 feet; and its breadth, from the east line of he Fourth Avenue, westward, 503 feet. Its area is up- vards of ten acres, being as large as the whole of the Park, and nearly three times as large as Hudson square. The City Corporation have recently directed all the buildings to be removed, and the area of the square to be reduced to the City level. It has been lately con- lected with Washington square by the extension and widening of Wooster-street, from Waverley-place to Fourteenth-street, which is hereafter to bear the name of "Jackson Avenue."
GRAMERCY PARK,
Is a private square, the use of which is attached to the 60 adjacent lots. It is distant precisely two miles north of the present City Hall, and is situated between the Fourth and Third Avenues, and between Twentieth and Twenty-first streets. Its dimensions, within the railing, are 400 feet from E. to W., and 184 feet from N. to S., with streets on each side 60 feet wide. The whole of the land forming this square, comprehending the carriage ways on the east and west sides, was gratuitously con- veyed, in the year 1831, by Mr. S. B. Ruggles, to five

Trustees, with power to enclose the Park with an orna- mental iron railing, and keep it for ever open. The in- terior is to be embellished with shrubbery, in the style of the private squares laid out in the modern portion of the City of London.
The estate upon which this square is laid out, is called "Crommessie," in the ancient Dutch records ; but during the last half century has been designated on the City maps as "the Gramercy farm."
The City Corporation have signified their approbation of this square, by passing a resolution to exempt the lands lying within the Park from taxation. A new avenue, 75 feet wide, established by the Legislature in 1832, leads from the middle of this Park to Fourteenth- street, and is named "Irving-place," as a token of respec: for our distinguished countryman, Washington Irving.
CLINTON SQUARE,
Laid out by an act of the Legislature, in the year 1833 upon the tract of low land in the north-eastern section o the City, called Stuyvesant's Meadows, is situated be tween Avenues A. and B., and between Seventh an Tenth streets. It is 687 feet in length, N. to S., and 66 feet in breadth, E. to W., enclosing an area of 10₺ acres The expense of forming this square is to be levied h assessment upon the lands in the vicinity. It is directl connected with the elegant ranges of buildings in Eightl. street, called "St. Mark's-place."
