Where there are cattle and horses, there must be medicine men with remedies capable of curing sick animals. With this in mind. Doc Weare established a factory on the south side of the canal to manufacture medicines for horses and cattle. It was rumored some barrels of this product might have found their way to the Pritchard-Cragg Tavern.
The intensity of development was increased in 1853 when the New York Central laid track through Perinton and Fairport.
For some thirty years the Canal had been the exclusive shipper of grain. apples and potatoes, with New York buyers coming to town each fall and spring to make deals and breathe fresh air. The railroad divided business with the canal for awhile but gradually gained control of most of the shipping business. A good iron horse can outrun a mule any day. .
Industrial Development
Important industry came to Fairport in 1852 when D. B. DeLand founded a firm which gained immediate and continuous success. The firm was DeLand & Co .. Fairport Chemical Works. Its products were soda, saleratus, baking powder and sal soda.
The business expanded rapidly with merchandise sold in most of the States and territories in the West and South.
The firm even owned and operated the village electric plant and today wouldn't the U. S. Justice Department have fun with that tie-in.
Everything was going along fine for the DeLands when the whole works burned to the ground. It was all rebuilt that same year.
After the fire. the villagers decided the water supply from Thomas Creek and the Canal was inadequate. The standpipe on Summit St., filled with water from artesian wells on John St .. supplied water from then on.
. :
THE THINGS . THAT MAKE A TOWN
The people of Perinton are to be congratulated on this, their 150th anniversary. The devel- opment of the community is but a reflection of its people's ca- pacity for growth.
:
The character and energy of the men and women who set- tled Perinton 150 years ago, and of those who today proudly carry forward its traditions, are best revealed by Perinton's stat- . ure and the regard with which , it is held in the community of towns.
Even in our few years' associa- tion with the citizens and offi- cials of Perinton, this evidence of the things that make a town have become clearly apparent to us.

And the DeLand's estate is now the Baptist Home.
The family liked Fairport so much they moved to Florida, where a city was named in their honor.
It was only a few years after the founding of the DeLand Works that the Civil War began.
In the 108th Infantry, organized in 1862. were 265 men from Perinton.
Recruited in less than a month, the unit left Rochester Aug. 19, 1862. going to New York and then Washington. By mid-September, it had en- gaged in its first battle at Antietam, later fighting in the Wilderness Spottsylvania, Cold Harbor and other famous battles. The group, or rather its survivors, were mustered out June 1. 1865.
A monument to the fallen, located in Mt. Pleasant cemetery, was erect- ed in 1866, one year before the Village of Fairport was incorporated.
While all this was going on in and around Fairport. Despatch was being founded to the north, thanks to the Merchants Despatch Transportation Corpo- ration.
Noted for its railroad industry, switch yards, pianos, paper boxes and Sam Urzetta, the village is now known as East Rochester.
Half of East Rochester lies in Perinton, the other half in the Town of Pittsford. But then, half an East Rochester is better than none.
Fairport's fame grew in direct proportion to the tin can.
All this started in 1873 with Ezra Edgett's can company. Ez and his cousin, Amos Cobb, planted the first field of sweet corn ever used for can- ning in New York State. Such questions as amount of sales that year and who smoked the corn silk are still unanswered.
Making cans in the 1880's was a laborious process involving tin-smith's shears, a hole in the top of the can, pushing the friut or vegetables through the hole, soldering on the lid. immersing the sealed can in boiling water, and a lot of luck.
If the can burst, it was not ready for the consumer. With all those bursting cans, you can imagine the problems such as how to get the tomatoes off the ceiling, who's going to handle the next law suit and what do you do with a burst can - sell it to Crosman Arms for target practice purposes?
Apparently the process of canning is fairly well under control. Ameri- can Can Company still flourishes in Fairport, aiding the local tax problems considerably.
And telephones came to the area in 1884, replacing smoke signals, na- tive drums, and loud yelling.
Then there was the Fairport Vinegar Works, set up in 1893. which set back residential housing to the windward for several decades.

There was also that problem about trolley tracks with three rival com- panies seeking the right of way through Fairport. The Old R. S. & E. firm won the rights and operated the line from 1906 to 1931. It is reported that high fences were built along the canal to keep the cars from frightening the mules on the tow path and the boat crews from frightening the passengers on the trolley.
And it wasn't until 1906 that the Municipal Plant provided 24 hour electric service. Prior to that, electric power was available from one hour before sunset to one hour after sunrise. It is believed this proved to be of great help to air raid wardens during blackouts throughout the Spanish- American War.
So many events of significance have occurred through the years, it is impossible to do justice on these pages to them and to the people directly concerned.

Today Perinton is a complex embracing many and diverse industries, residential areas, unspoiled acreage and farm lands.
The Town doesn't have the usual identifying institutions found in other communities. There is no Perinton post office, no Perinton School system, no Perinton police force or fire department.
Yet all these services are provided by the villages in the town or by Monroe County. So, in essence, nothing is lost by Perinton residents in this matter of identification.
The Town of Perinton continues to grow and prosper and hopefully is fulfilling the dreams of Glover and Johanna Perrin.
