ASSOCIATIONS AND SOCIETIES.


Medical College of Buffalo .- The University of Buffalo was chartered during the legislative session of 1846, and endowed with all the powers and privileges which belong to any College or University in the State. The Med- ical Department was established and organ- ized in August of the same year. The lectures commence on the first Wednesday in Novem- ber, and continue sixteen weeks. A prelimi- nary term commences four weeks before the regular term, which is devoted to dissection, clinical instruction, and lectures on special subjects. The preliminary term is voluntary and gratuitous.

The library numbers about ten thousand volumes, comprising many rare and valuable works, and is gradually increasing.


The Reading Room is supplied with all the daily city newspapers, and many from the principal cities of the Union, together with the ablest American and Foreign quarterlies and monthly periodicals. It is open every week-day from 8, A. M. to 9, P. M., to mem- bers and strangers introduced by members, the latter being entitled to its free use for one month from their introduction. The Rooms are in the American Hotel Block.

The Company was organized under the General Gas Light Law of 1848, and the works were completed and gas supplied to the city in November of the same year.


The works are situated on the Block bound- ed by Gonesee, Jackson and Fourth Streets and the Wilkeson Slip, and comprising about five acres in all occupied by the company.


The whole construction is of the most sub- stantial character, embracing all modern im- provements, and with the extensions and ad- ditional machinery to be added the present BORSOD, will make it one of the most complete works in the United States.


The quantity of street mains now laid and in use, is about fifty-four miles, with gasom- cter room and retort house facilities for the manufacture and supply of a daily consump- tion of 500,000 cubic feet.
