Young Men's Association. - The Young Men's Association is an institution of a literary


and scientific character, and was established by the Young men of this city in the winter of 1835 and '36, and subsequently incorporated by an act of the Legislature, passed March, 1843.


The library numbers about ten thousand volumes, comprising many rare and valuable works, and is gradually increasing.


The Reading Room is supplied with all the daily city newspapers, and many from the principal cities of the Union, together with the ablest American and Foreign quarterlies and monthly periodicals. It is open every week- day from 8, A. M. to 9, P. M., to members and strangers introduced by members, the latter being entitled to its free use for one month from their introduction. The Rooms are in the American Hotel Block.


Lectures, literary and scientific, are main- tained during the winter months.

German Young Men's Association .- Institut- ed 1841-incorporated 1846. The object of this Association is for the purpose of establish- ing and maintaining a library and reading rooms, lectures and other means of promoting moral and intellectual improvement, and has about 200 members. The library consists of about 2000 volumes. The rooms are located in Hauenstein's Block, corner Main and Mo- hawk streets, and is open every Wednesday and Saturday nights from 7 to 9 o'clock.

The Company was organized under the Gen- eral Gas Light Law of 1848, and the works were completed and gas supplied to the city in November of the same year.


The works are situated on the block bounded by Genesee, Jackson and Fourth streets and the Wilkeson Slip, and comprise about five acres in all occupied by the company.


The whole construction is of the most sub- stantial character, embracing all modern im- provements, and with the extensions and addi- tional machinery added the past season, makes it one of the most complete works in the United States.


The quantity of street mains now laid and in use, is about fifty-seven miles, with gasome- ter room and retort-house facilities for the man- ufacture and supply of a daily consumption of 500,000 cubic feet.
