The Company was organized in 1848, un- der the general law authorizing the formation of Gas Light Companies. The works were completed and Gas supplied to the city in November of the same year.
The works are situated on the spacious lot on the North side of Genesee street, between Jackson and Fourth streets, and occupy about two thirds of the block between said streets and the Wilkeson slip.
In the construction of the works, all the modern improvements are embraced, and they are believed to be unsurpassed by any other similar work in the State, in capacity and economy of working.
The large improvements and extensions of 1852 were made with reference to supplying the entire city with Gas, and the future exten- sions of Pipe to accomplish this object can be made at a comparatively small expense. The quantity now laid is about thirty-six miles, and the Gasometers are of sufficient capacity to supply this city with a daily consumption of 350,000 cubic feet. The price of Gas was originally fixed at $3,50 per thousand feet, but was reduced in 1851 to $3,00 net, when promptly paid, which is the price now charged. It is believed to be as low if not lower than Gas is furnished by any private. company in the United States.
