Medical College of Buffalo .- The University of Buffalo was chartered during the legislative session of 1847, and endowed with all the pow- ers and privileges which belong to any College or University in the State. The Medical De- partment was established and organized in Au- gust of the same year. The lectures commence on the first Wednesday in November, and con- tinne sixteen weeks. A preliminary term com- mences four weeks before the regular term, which is devoted to dissection, clinical instruc- tion, and lectures on special subjects. The pre- liminary term is voluntary and gratuitous.

Young Men's Association .- The Young Men's Association is an institution of a literary and scientific character, and was established by the young men of this city in the winter of 1835 and 1836, and subsequently incorporated by an act of the Legislature, passed March, 1843.
The library numbers about eleven thousand five hundred volumes, comprising many rare and valuable works, and is gradnally increasing.
The Reading Room is supplied with all the daily city newspapers, and many from the prin- cipal cities of the Union, together with the ablest American and Foreign quarterlies and monthly periodicals. It is open every week-day from 8 A. M. to 9 P. M., to members and strangers in- troduced by members, the latter being entitled to its free nse for one month from their introduc- tion. The Rooms are in the American Hotel block. .

German Young Men's Association .- Instituted 1841; incorporated 1×46. The object of this Association is for the purpose of establishing and maintaining a library and reading rooms, lectures, and other means of promoting moral and intellectual improvement, and has about 200 members. The library consists of about 2.000 volumes. The rooms are located in Hauenstein's block, corner Main and Mohawk streets, and are open every Wednesday and Saturday nights from 7 to 9 o'clock.

This Company was organized under the Gen- eral Gas Light Law of 1848, and the works were completed and gas supplied to the city in November of the same year.
The works are situated on the block bounded by Genesee, Jackson and Fourth streets and the Wilkeson Slip, and comprise about five neres in all, occupied by the Company.
The whole construction is of the most sub- stantial character, embracing all modern im- provements, and with the extensions and addi- tional machinery added the past season. makes it one of the most complete works in the United States.
The quantity of street mains now laid and in use is about fifty-seven miles, with gasometer room and retort-house facilities for the manufac- ture and supply of a daily consumption of 500,000 cubic feet.

There are five Lodges of this Order in the city, and one Degree Lodge, under charters granted by the Grand Lodge of the I. O. O. F. of Northern New York.
The oldest is Niagara Lodge, No. 25, instituted Nov. 6, 1:39. Regular meetings, Monday even- ing of each week, over old Post Office.
The next is Bnffalo Lodge, No. 37. instituted May, 1840. Regular meetings, Tuesday evening of each week, over Old Post Office.
