HISTORY OF SERVICE-On duty at Covington, Ky., until Jan., 1864, being sent on special duty to Chattanooga, Tenn., in Sept., kept there by Bragg until latter part of October; ordered to Knoxville, Tenn., and reached there Jan. 20th, remaining until Jan. 1865, Gen. Tillson being assigned to command of 4th Div., 23d Army Corps, and District of East Tenn .; had no serious fighting until Wheeler's raid in Aug. and Sept., 1864, when was steadily engaged in skirmishes, ending in engagement at Flat Creek, East Tenn., where lost five officers out of seven, and sixty out of seventy-two men ; in Jan., 1865, Gen. Tillson's command was transferred to the Department of the Cumberland, and known as the 4th Independent Division A. C., and was sent into Virginia and North Carolina to hold passes in the mountains while Gen. Stoneman made his raid; in May, 1865, was sent to Ashville, N. C., to head off Jeff Davis, and on return in June resigned, the war being ended.

Wm. Groose.

HISTORY OF SERVICE-September, 8, 1862, the 84th Indiana Volun- teer Infantry was assigned to the defense of Covington, Ky., and Cincinnati, then threatened by Gen. Kirby Smith ; regiment afterwards ordered to Point Pleasant, thence to Catlettsburg, and thence to Louisville, where was assigned to the Army of Kentucky, thence to Nashville ; in June, 1863, assigned to the Reserve Corps, commanded by Gen. Granger, and reached Chattanooga September 13, 1863, taking position on the left of the Army of the Cumber- land; in the battle of Chickamauga ; the 84th Indiana was attached to the First Division, commaned by Gen. J. B. Steadman, losing in the terrible en- gagement of Sept. 20th one hundred and twenty-five men ; during the Atlanta campaign which followed, was engaged in battles at Tunnel Hill, Rocky Face, Dalton, Resaca, Kingston, Pumpkin Vine Creek, Pine Mountain, Kenesaw Mountain, Neal Dow Church, Peach Tree Creek, Shoal's Creek, Jonesboro, Lovejoy's Station, and after Atlanta, at Franklin and Nashville ; participated in every battle in which regiment was engaged; after close of the war, be- came a member of the medical profession, and appointed Acting Surgeon of the National Military Hospital, located near Dayton, O.

HISTORY OF SERVICE .- In campaign under Gen. Rosecrans, in "West Vir- ginia, during 3 months' service ; in three years' service, was in the Army of the Cumberland; in campaign against Nashville in winter of 1861-62, in Johnson's Brigade, McCook's Division ; in movement against Corinth, Miss .; absent on recruiting service at time of battle of Shiloh ; in campaign in Ken- tucky during Bragg's invasion, in 1862, ending with battle of Perryville; in Murfreesboro campaign and battle of Stone River, receiving a slight wound in that battle ; was absent from command, detailed at Post Adjutant, at Camp Chase, during the Chickamauga campaign ; was in Atlanta campaign and all its battles, including Jonesboro and Lovejoy; was in the Hood campaign and battles at Spring Hill, Franklin and Nashville; was in movement up the East Tennessee Valley at time of Lee's surrender ; afterwards, was in the Texas campaign, ending services at San Antonio, Texas, Nov. 21, 1865, ar- riving at home Jan. 1, 1866; served as private, Sergeant, Sergeant-Major, 2d and Ist Lieutenants and Captain, and as Adjutant of regiments, brigades and divisions, and as Inspector-General of division ; regiment was nearly the en- tire period of service in Ist Brigade, 3d Division, 4th Corps, Army of the Cum- berland, the brigade being known as Willich's. .

HISTORY OF SERVICE .- Began an active service in the field in winter of 1861-2, in the Department of the West, under Gen. Hunter and others; joined the Army of the Cumberland at Nashville, Tenn., in Feb., 1863, and participated in all movements and battles of that army under Gens. Rose- crans and Thomas, then with Gen. Sherman to Atlanta, in 3d cavalry division, under Wilson, Stoneman and Kilpatrick, to fall of Atlanta; then with Gen Sherman in " March to the Sea," under Gen. Kilpatrick ; thence Northward, under Gen. Sherman, through the Carolinas, to the surrender of Gen. John- ston's Army ; and back to Salem, N. C., holding the country until August, 1865; mustered out August 8, 1865; participated in all cavalry engagements during said time ; was honorably discharged.

III. Companions having objections to candidates for membership will please forward the same to the Chairman of the Committee of Investigation, or to the Recorder, as soon as possible, in order that the most complete knowl- edge may be had of every case before presentation to the Commandery.


IV. Applications for membership should be presented either at the stated meetings of the Commandery, or forwarded to the Recorder, not later than forty days previous thereto, in order to insure action thereon a the next meeting.


V. Applicants for membership, upon whom action will be taken at the business meeting on the evening of February 4th, who propose being present at that time, to be invested (if elected ), and who will attend the dinner, should notify the Recorder, so that covers may be laid for them. Recommendors of such applicants will please so notify them.


The proper blanks will be furnished on application to the Recorder.


FEBRUARY FOURTH.


The second Annual Dinner will take place Wednesday, Feb. 4th prox.


The business meeting will be held in parlor No. 12, and will commence promptly at 7 o'clock. Members elected on that evening can present them- selves for investiture immediately after election and attend the dinner, if they desire to do so; but notice of their intention to be present to be invested and to attend dinner, must be given to the Recorder at once.

VI. The following proceedings of the stated meeting, held Wednesday evening, January 7, 1885, are promulgated for the information of Companions.

The minutes of the last meeting, December 3d, were read by the Recorder and approved.


Prayer omitted, in absence of the Chaplain.


Roll call by unanimous consent was omitted.

VII. The Committee of Investigation, Brevet Brig .- Gen. Geo. W. Neff, Chairman, reported favorably upon the following applicant for membership, and the ballot being taken, Companions Gen. J. H. Bates and Capt. S.W. Bard acting as tellers, he was declared duly elected a Companion of the Order, as follows :

VIII. Companion Major E. C. Dawes moved that, if the Investigating Committee were ready to report upon other applicants in the circular, and de- ferred doing so in accordance with the observance of Rule No. 6, the Rule be suspended and the applicants be ballotted for.


Companion Gen. Geo. W. Neff, Chairman of the Investigating Committee, stated, as other members of the committee were not present, he would ask that the motion might not prevail. Major Dawes withdrew the resolution.


IX. Companion Major W. R. Lowe, Chairman of Committee on Music and Song Books, reported progress, he hoped, for the last time, and stated that at the next meeting, Feb. 4th, unless unexpected: obstacles interfered, the song book of the Ohio Commandery would be ready for sale and distribu- tion among its members. Companion Lowe gave a detailed account of the difficulties the Music Committee had encountered in the way of securing copy- righted songs, etc. Said they had acquired the right to some, and in regard to those where permission to publish had not been secured, had determined to go ahead and print them in the book, and if it got up a fight in the courts, as there were numerous able lawyers in the Commandery, would depend upon them to see the Commandery safely through. Several pages of proof had been submitted, and gave evidence of the work (in the hands of a Cincinnati firm) being well done. Companion Lowe asked companions to make sug- gestions of appropriate songs for the book, and read a list of the songs selected.


THE ANNUAL DINNER.


X. Companion Major James L. Foley, Chairman of Council, reported that arrangements for the second annual dinner were about completed; the price of tickets would be $6.00 per plate. Contracts for the music and decora- tions had been signed ; both would be appropriate, and the latter very hand- some ; the correspondence received indicated a large attendance,-perhaps as many as 200. Among those who would respond to regular toasts were : Bishop (chaplain), Fallows, of Chicago (Illinois) Commandery ; Companion .

Gen. Wm. H. Gibson, Companion Gen. J. M. Scofield, U. S. A .; Companion Capt. J. A. Watrous, of Milwaukee (Wisconsin) Commandery ; Companion Major J. S. Ostrander, Companion Surgeon J. R. Weist, Companion Jas. E. Murdoch, Companion Capt. H. L. Morey and Companion Capt. J. Kent Hamilton ; in addition, would have a number of volunteer toasts ; the dinner would, it was hoped, be satisfactory to all, as a tempting bill of fare had been prepared.


RECEPTION COMMITTEE.


Companion Foley announced that the Council had appointed a Committee of Reception for the annual reunion. He spoke of the cordial reception given visiting members by the Cleveland Companions at the meeting in that city last June, citing the heartiness and warmth of feeling there and then dis- played as worthy of imitation. It was the wish of the Council, respectfully, but earnestly, expressed, that the Committee appointed on Reception would, every member of it, be at the Burnet House, headquarters of the Command- ery, early on the day of the reunion, February 4th, to extend a generous and cordial welcome to arriving Companions-see that they were properly taken care of, and then escorted to the headquarter rooms and introduced.

Major Foley also announced that designs for a library case and a photo- graph cabinet had been adopted by the Council, and that contracts for both would be made as soon as possible. The former was greatly needed, and it was hoped that both would be completed by May.


XI. The Recorder stated that, at the request of Companion Gen. M. F. Force, the Hon. Secretary of War, Rob't T. Lincoln, had presented the Com- mandery, for its library, several volumes of the Official Records of the War. Thanks of the Commandery were given to the Hon. Secretary of War and .Gen. M. F. Force.

It was also stated by the Recorder that the Commandery was indebted to Companion Col. E. A. Scovill, of Cleveland, for valuable and historical con- tributions to the Commandery Scrap Book. Thanks were voted Companion Scoville.


XII. Companions Capt. H. L. Morey and Gen. Rob't W. Healy stating upon honor that their badges were lost, and that advertising and searching for same had failed to find them, asked that duplicates be ordered by the Chancellor. On motion of Companion Dr. A. C. Kemper permission was given for the issuing of duplicate insignias, Companions Morey and Healy to pay actual cost of same.


XIII. The Recorder announced that Companion Gen. Rob't W. Healy, at his own request, had been transferred from New York to the Ohio Commandery.


"Resolution of Sympathy to Commander-in-Chief General Hancock."


XIV. At the instance of Companion Dr. A. C. Kemper, the Recorder was unanimously requested to transmit the following resolution to our Command- er-in-Chief, Gen. W. S. Hancock, in reference to the bereavement he has suffered since our last meeting.


"The Ohio Commandery of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States assures Major-General Winfield S, Hancock, U. S. A., Com- mander-in-Chief of the Order, of their sympathy with him and his esteemed wife, Mrs. Hancock, in their grief over the death of their only child, Mr. Russell Hancock."


XV. At the close of the business meeting, Companion Dr. A. C. Kemper read a very interesting paper entitled, "The Growth of an Idea," contributed by Companion Gen. W. B. Hazen, U.S.A., Chief Signal Officer, of Washington, D. C., which was followed by a paper from Companion Gen. M. F. Force, entitled, "Personal Recollections of the Vicksburg Campaign." Gen. Force's paper, one of the most pleasing of the many entertaining papers read before the Commandery, was listened to with wrapt attention and warmly applauded. A vote of thanks was extended both Gens. Hazen and Force for their valuable contributions.


XVI. The usual lunch, with singing and speeches, was enjoyed after the reading of the papers.
