HEADQUARTERS COMMANDERY OF THE STATE OF OHIO.

CINCINNATI, March 6, 1885.

General U. Grant, Commander New York Commandery, Loyal Legion U. S .:

MY DEAR SIR AND COMMANDER .- At the last stated meeting of the Ohio Commandery Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States, held March 4, the Recorder was in - structed to extend to you the sympathy of the Commandery in your affliction. In obeying the request, allow me to state in the name of the Commandery that when the information of your pain and suffering was conveyed to us, it filled the heart of every Companion with grief and sorrow. Next to those who are united to you by the sacred ties of family and kindred blood, stand the sol- diers who, as your comrades, bore with you the weary marches, stood beside you on many a hot and bloody battle-field, shared with you the hours of danger and disaster. and at last were permitted with you to enjoy the crowning hours of victory.

Your fame and good name are the common glory of the whole country, and as fellow- soldiers and Companions of the Loyal Legion we shall esteem it our especial duty to guard both, with life itself if necessary.

In these trying hours, when racked with the tortures of an agonizing disease and oppressed with many cares, we extend to you our respectful regard and devotion, with assurances of the deepest sympathy and affection. We trust and hope that the; same inflexible will which has so often given you victory may now aid you to triumph over disease and physical suffering.

It is our fervent prayer that you may be speedily restored to vigorous health, and we humbly trust that He who is Ruler of all men and nations may so order events as to spare your life for many years to your family, your Loyal Legion Companions and comrades of the Grand Army of the Republic, and to a grateful country and people.

With a hopeful prayer for your health and happiness. the Ohio Commandery, Loyal Legion, tender to you love and sympathy.

I have the honor to be respectfully and sincerely yours,

A. H. MATTOX, Recorder.
