ANNUAL
TOLEDO
City Directorne
For 1871-72.
Embracing a large amount of Valuable Information of Local Societies, Incorporated Bodies, S.c.,
TOGETHER WITH A
GENERAL BUSINESS DIRECTORY.
VOLUME SIX.
TOLEDO, OHIO : BLADE MAMMOTH STEAM BOOK AND JOB PRINTING HOUSE. 1871.
The Sixth Volume of SCOTT's DIRECTORY OF. TOLEDO, is presented to its Patrons and the Public, with the conviction that it will be received favorably, as an effort to keep pace with the growing importance of the City. Disappointment in procuring a reasonable supply of paper of the desired quality will account for its late appearance this year.
The Directory is the most complete index of a town. Here, in a compact form, can be seen the whole business occupations of its citizens, arranged and classified in regular order. It is a mirror of the enterprise, thrift and public spirit of the place in which it is published, at all times of convenient reference to the citizen or stranger. It is therefore a CHEAP MEDIUM, far superior to most of the ephemeral modes of advertising which the passing adventurer extemporizes, and the unreflect- ing and inexperienced so readily embrace and encourage.
August 1871.
INTRODUCTORY.
The friends of TOLEDO may safely indulge in bright anticipation of the future greatness and prosperity of the city. Every year is clearing up the doubts that may have found a place in the minds of prudent men, and her ad- vance in growth and prosperity is questioned no longer. All concur in the opinion that she must eventually become one of the great centres of the trade and manufactures of the country. It is this general conviction that has in- duced the managers of an important railroad interest to make it the western terminus of their road, and that, too, without having received from it one cent of subscription to the stock of the company ; a compliment which no doubt in time will secure from the citizens of Toledo a liberal return. Time and want of room will prevent a discussion of the advantages which the building of the ATLANTIC AND LAKE ERIE Railroad will confer upon the town. In connec- tion with the other roads that are under construction, the effect upon the com- merce and population of Toledo must be rapid and surprising. When coal of the best quality for manufacturing purposes can be deposited upon our docks at as low or lower price than at any other manufacturing point in the west, the superior advantages which Toledo possessses for distributing manufactur- ed products over eight or ten states, will most certainly draw hither new and various manufacturing interests, and with them many active and industrious workmen with their families. Smelting furnaces will line the ample shores of our navigable streams, and hundreds of manufactories of iron and wood spring up amongst them. These will draw other industries around them, mutually aiding and helping each other, and giving employment to many active and in- telligent hands.
Before these new roads, leading into the centre of the rich coal fields of Ohio, and the wealthy forests of Michigan, and through the rich soil of Indi- ana to the Ohio river, had been projected, the advantages of Toledo had be- come well known, and had attracted an active and enterprising population. Trade had extended its grasping arms in every direction. Our commission and jobbing merchants had gathered in their customers from a long distance, and it had become demonstrated that it was the natural point to which the pro- ducts of large portions of Ohio, Indiana, Michigan and Illinois, would inevitably tend, and large returns of merchandise and manufactured articles shipped in exchange. Our citizens, with a wise liberality and foresight, had inaugurated a system of PUBLIC SCHOOLS, unsurpassed in the country, and erected large, tasty and commodious school buildings, challenging the admiration of all, and inviting to our town people of wealth and refinement. As a consequence, the population of the city has been more than doubled for several decades-the population of 1860 being, according to the federal census, 13,696 and that of 1870, 31,731, showing an increase in ten years of 130 per cent., thus making Toledo the third city in the State. It is not unreasonable to conclude that the same ratio will contine, which will show a population in 1880 of 72,000 and upwards.

SCOTT'S CITY DIRECTORY.
THE ACTIVITY IN REAL ESTATE
which has been exhibited here for the past year or two, while elsewhere, with hardly an exception, extreme dullness has prevailed, is most assuring. The circle of settlement is being considerably extended, new additions laid out and put upon the market, and large sales made to artisans and operatives who are building comfortable dwellings upon them. Messrs. MACOMBER & MOORE have disposed of many lots in their new plats on Lagrange and Dorr streets, and with a considerate and wise forethonght have assisted the purchasers to make valuable improvements. At the sales made in 1870 by Mr. H. J. RAFFENS- PERGER, people at a great distance were attracted hither and made large in - vestments, the sale of suburban lots on the 19th October amounting to over four hundred, while those of Nov. 22d and 24th aggregated over $500,000, thus conclusively showing their faith in the future of our rapidly growing city.
There are few towns at the present time that can show as many substan- tial improvements, indicating the general prosperity of the people. Reference was made last year to the splendid structures that were at that time in process of erection. Fine drawings of several will be found within the leaves of the directory.
