Non-Forfeiture in Life Insurance.

WHAT IS IT ?

-

Attention is invited to the following statement of its meaning in the JOHN HANCOCK MUTUAL LIFE, OF BOSTON :--

All Policies in this Company are strictly NON-FORFEITABLE by the laws of Massachusetts. For Example: A PARTY IS INSURED AGED 35. LIFE POLICY.

One Cash Annual Premium will continue the Policy in force 2 years and 3 days. Three Cash Annual Premiums 66 6 66 66 " 27 66

Five Cash Annual Premiums 66

66 66 10

66

" 56

66

An Endowment Policy issued at the age of 35, payable to insured at 50, or at prior decease, after ONE payment, continues in force 5 years and 115 days as Life Insurance.

Now wherein does this differ from ordinary non-forfeiture? Just here. In order to secure a non-forfe ting or paid up policy on the usual plan of other companies, the insured must sur- render the old and take out a new policy for a REDUCED AMOUNT, according to the value of pre- vious payments.

Should death occur before the lapsed policy has been so surrendered or exchanged, the whole policy will be void and valueless.

In the John Hancock, the law of the State requires the keeping it in force for a given time for FULL VALUE LESS THE PREMIUMS DUE, and the COMPANY HAS NO OPTION, unless the holder surrenders. The following furnishes

A Practical Illustration

Mr. Richard A. Douglas, lately residing in Philadelphia, insured his life in this company, May 3, 1869, for fifteen thousand dollars; he failed to meet his second payment on the 3d of May, 1870, and died on the 2d of September last, premium four months overdue and still unpaid.

The required proofs of his death were furnished to the Company on the 17th day of Septem- ber, and on the 17th day of November the Agents paid the policy to Mrs. Douglas, as fol- lows :-

Amount of Policy $15,000 00

Premium due May 3d

$576 90

Less Dividend first year

115 35

$461 55

Interest from May 3d

17 68 479 23

Actual amount received by Mrs. Douglas $14,520 77

And the policy would have kept in force had Mr Douglas lived till July, 1871.

Upon the receipt of this settlement Mrs. Douglas remarked: "I have seven other policies in other companies lying at home, on which Mr. Douglas has paid for several years, but which lapsed last spring and from which I cannot obtain one dollar." Over fifteen thous- and dollars in other companies, with the same neglect of premiums, were forfeited and of no value.

This is what we call Non-Forfeiture; and it is Equity. It costs the insurer no more, is it not worth securing ?
