PAT. ISES I
In bringing to notice the
SIMMERLY DERRICK
FOR HANDLING
ORE COAL
Built by us, we desire briefly to call attention to the following points:
1st. IT IS BUILT IN THE MOST SUBSTANTIAL MANNER, of IRON AND STEEL, well knowing the severe work required of it.
2nd. A SPECIAL FEATURE OF THIS DERRICK is that the Engine and Hoisting Mach- inery are firmly bolted.to a solid iron bed-plate, insuring against any racking or getting out of line, and being independent of the carriage, overcomes any unevenness in, or settling of Dock.
3rdl. THE "SIMMERLY" IS EQUIPPED with either single or double engine (as may be desired) with 9x12 cylinder of the most approved pattern, steam pump, boiler, etc., complete.
4th. ITS SIMPLICITY IN OPERATING, as the lioisting, stopping and lowering move- ments are all accomplished with one lever.
5th. THE ABSOLUTE SAFETY IN OPERATING, as the hoisting and rotating gear, has 216 square inches of friction surface, which, with the combined clutch and brake band (secured by letters patent), are so constructed that, so far as strength is necessary, a boy can operate it with ease.
6th. THE CAPACITY OF THE DERRICK is at the will of the Engineer, being from 600 to 1000 tons per day of ten hours, according to his skill.
THE "SIMMERLY" DERRICK IS BUILT FOR USE, and the capacity of the machine, in connection w.th its DURABILITY, makes it an economical investment for any one requir- ing its services.
Our experience in constructing DERRICKS and CARS justifies us in saying that any orders entrusted to us will be satisfactorily executed.
Correspondence Solicited. Prices on Application.

ANNOUNCEMENT.
EIGHTEENTH ANNUAL EDITION.
This volume contains the addresses of EIGHTY-FOUR THOUSAND, SEVEN HUNDRED AND SIXTY-Two (84,762) PERSONS. One by one, column after column and page after page, an ACTUAL COUNT has been made; the names of firms, incorporated companies, domes- tics, traveling salesmen whose homes are elsewhere, also all reference lines and other matter, quite as necessary for Directory purposes, but not pertinent to the object sought, being first carefully erased from the pages of the book.
CLEVELAND has fully maintained its volume of growth during the past Directory year, which extends from July to July. The extraordinary figure 84,762, as developed by the count, is composed only of the names of individuals eligible for insertion. Multiply this number by 3, which is the lowest figure ever used for such purposes, and our population is shown to be Two HUNDRED AND FIFTY-FOUR THOUSAND, TWO HUNDRED AND EIGHTY-SIX. See tabulated statement on the following page showing comparative number of names occurring in each letter for the years 1886, '87 and '88. The statistics which these columns of figures present are an infallible basis on which to estimate our growth and progress.
Mes 68/8881
This is our Eighteenth Annual. In its compilation we have endeavored to surpass "all previous efforts. A Directory that does not reduce its errors to the minimum is of little value. We have spared no pains or expense to make the Work all that its well-earned name implies, and we submit it with confidence, believing it to be as near perfect as human heads and hands, aided by many years of experience in this particular profession, can cause such a work to be. It is printed this year from clear cut, new type, made especially for the pur- pose, and the paper used is the most suitable in texture, color and weight to be obtained; both type and paper are of Cleveland manufacture.
To those who appreciate our efforts, our patrons we mean, and they embrace about everybody, we wish right here to express thanks for encouragement and courtesy. The Directory will appear in July in the future, and we promise its reputation for excellence will be fully maintained.

The man who oft borrows this book is a bore; His neighbor says that much and thinks a sight more. He whose motto is " can't," he who " cannot afford " To pay for a ball game will peep through a board. So the business (?) man-what !- who supports not our labor,
Will skimp a few dollars and bother his neighbor. One act, we contend, is as bad as the other; So subscribe for a copy and save all the bother.
