On January 7, the officers were installed by M .. W .. Bro. Lewis P. Schaus, Past Grand Master, assisted by Bro. Frank M. Ransbottom, District Lecturer, as Grand Marshal. Six hundred and eighty-seven persons partook of the banquet which preceded the ceremonies. This was probably the largest gathering of this kind that every assembled in the Masonic Temple. The banquet commenced at six o'clock and lasted until after ten-as soon as the tables were vacated, they were immediately filled. Every- where there was an indescribable jam, and not until after ten o'clock did the installation ceremonies begin. Bro. Frank L. D. Ferrel acted as the toastmaster, and among the speakers were M .:. W .. Bro. Ike M. Robinson and M .. W .. Bro. Charles S. Hoskinson, both Past Grand Masters of the Grand Lodge.


On June 24, the members of Amity and La Fayette Lodges, escorted by Cyrene Commandery, No. 10, Knights Templar, participated in the parade incident to the dedication of the new Masonic Temple at Newark, Ohio. The journey was made by a special train over the Pennsylvania Railroad.


On Sunday, August 8, a Special Communication of La Fayette and Amity Lodges was held in connection with the laying of the corner-stone of the new Bethesda Hospital by the Grand Lodge of Ohio.


The program for the day consisted of a joint meeting of Amity and La Fayette Lodges at 8.30 A. M., at which time a Lodge of Master Masons was opened. A Commandery of Knights Templar was opened immediately afterwards by Cyrene Com- mandery, No. 10, Knights Templar.


The entire morning was spent in meeting the various in- coming trains and escorting the visiting Masons to their head- quarters, the high school, Grace Methodist Episcopal and Cen- tral Presbyterian Churches having been secured for this pur- pose. The Reception Committee from the Lodges was com- posed of the officers, with Bro. William E. Deacon acting as chairman. A Committee was appointed by Cyrene Com-

mandery, No. 10, Knights Templar, consisting of Sir Knights Frank L. D. Ferrel, Orrin Pearson, and Harry W. Ross.


The visiting delegations were composed of four commanderies and more than twenty Lodges, many of whom were accompanied by bands, the most famous of which was the women's band of Chicago Junction.


The parade, which was headed by Bro. John J. Frick as Grand Marshal, was composed of six sections, and, but for a driving rain which continued during most of the afternoon, would have been the largest of its kind ever held in the city.

The Trustees, which up to this time had been appointed for each year, were elected for the first time, and the term of service was lengthened to three years. Bro. Cecil W. Tanner was elected for three years, Bro. Frank L. D. Ferrel for two years, and Bro. Harry E. Hollister for one year.


On December 30, a public installation of officers was held in the Weller Theatre, a special dispensation having been secured for the occasion. A Lodge of Master Masons was opened in the Lodge room, after which the Brethren formed in procession and marched to the theater. R .. W .. Bro. Frank M. Ransbottom, Senior Grand Deacon of the Grand Lodge, installed the officers, with the assistance of Bro. Robert Holliday, Lecturer of the Thirteenth District, as Grand Marshal. All officers were in- stalled with the exception of Bro. Charles E. Zimmer, the Junior Warden-elect, who was confined to his home with a broken hip.


A special telephone was installed from the bedside of Bro. Zimmer to the stage of the theater, while Bro. Charles F. Lewel- lyn acted as his proxy. Music was furnished by an orchestra and a quartet. The principal address of the evening was given by Rev. E. C. Coil, of American Union Lodge, No. 1.


1916 BRO. WILLIAM CLYDE DAWSON WORSHIPFUL MASTER


Brother Dawson was born in Zanesville, September 25, 1877. He attended the public schools until sixteen years of age, when he entered the employ of the Brasæmle Five-and-Ten-Cent Store, continuing with this concern for six years. After leaving them, he became identified with the American Encaustic Tiling Company and, by diligent attention to duty, soon rose to the position of general foreman of the entire third floor. He con- tinued in this capacity for eighteen years, retiring to accept the position of city salesman with the Mercantile Wholesale Grocery

Company, which position he still holds. On November 29, 1905, he was united in marriage to Miss Blanche Gertrude O'Toole, and to this union a son, Bernard A. Dawson, was born.


Brother Dawson was initiated an Entered Apprentice in La Fayette Lodge, October 20, 1910; passed to the degree of Fellow Craft, November 10, 1910, and raised to the degree of Master Mason February 16, 1911. He served the Lodge as Senior Stew- ard, 1912; Senior Deacon, 1913; Junior Warden, 1914; Senior Warden, 1915, and Worshipful Master, 1916.


He is a member of Zanesville Chapter, No. 9, Royal Arch Masons, receiving the Mark Master degree November 30, 1914; Past Master, February 8, 1915; Most Excellent Master, March 22, 1915, and Royal Arch, March 29, 1915.


He is a member of Amrou Grotto, No. 45, M. O. V. P. E. R. He resides at 248 Ridge Avenue.


On May 4, the Lodge voted to pay one-third of the cost of purchasing and erecting a granite stone over the grave of Bro. Calvin Conant, our first elective Master. The remainder of the cost was borne by Amity Lodge and Zanesville Chapter.


A Special Dispensation having been secured from the Grand Master, the installation of Bro. Charles E. Zimmer as Junior Warden was held on August 3. The Worshipful Master per- formed the ceremonies with the assistance of Bro. Richard Nicklin as Grand Marshal.


Forty-seven meetings were held during the year. Twenty- four were raised to the degree of Master Mason and three were admitted to membership. The annual return showed a member- ship of four hundred and forty-seven.


On December 7, the ninety-second Annual Communication was held, and the following officers were elected: Bro. Harry S. McClelland, Worshipful Master; Bro. Charles E. Zimmer, Senior Warden; Bro. Warrington, Chaplain. Bro. William C. Dawson was elected Trustee for three years.


The Trustees reported that they had borrowed eight thou- sand dollars from the First National Bank at five per cent in- terest, which amount had been expended in the purchase of addi- tional stock in The Masonic Temple Company, as authorized by previous vote of the Lodge.


On December 28, a public installation of officers was held in the Lodge room. Bro. Elmer A. Evans, District Lecturer, performed the ceremonies of installation, assisted by Bro. Cecil W. Tanner as Grand Marshal.

BRO. HARRY SHERMAN MCCLELLAND WORSHIPFUL MASTER


Brother McClelland was born in North Platte, Nebraska, January 14, 1884. The family came to Zanesville when Harry was five years of age. He attended the public schools of this city and the Zanesville High School, from which he graduated in 1903. While attending high school, his summer vacations were spent at the Peters and Reed Pottery, where he learned the rudiments of the pottery business. After his graduation, he accepted the position of shipping clerk with this concern, and a short time after was promoted to the position of bookkeeper. In 1909, he was elected Secretary and continued in this capacity until the reorganization, in January, 1922, under the name of the Zane Pottery Company, when he was elected President, Treasurer, and General Manager, which positions he now holds ..


On June 21, 1916, he was united in marriage to Miss Mabel Hall, of this city, and to this union a son, Robert Sherman Mc- Clelland, has been born.


Brother McClelland was initiated an Entered Apprentice in La Fayette Lodge February 9, 1911; passed to the degree of Fellow Craft March 16, 1911, and raised to the degree of Master Mason April 27, 1911. He served the Lodge as Junior Deacon, 1913; Senior Deacon, 1914; Junior Warden, 1915; Senior Warden, 1916, and Worshipful Master, 1917.

Harry Sherman McCelland


He served two years on the Board of Governors of the Ma- sonic Club.


The Capitular degrees were received in Zanesville Chapter, No. 9, Royal Arch Masons, as follows: Mark Master, May 5, 1913; Past and Most Excellent Masters, May 12, 1913, and Royal Arch, June 9, 1913.


He received the Cryptic degrees in Zanesville Council, No. 12, Royal and Select Masters, November 26, 1913, and was greeted a Super-Excellent Master the same evening.


He is a member of Cyrene Commandery, No. 10, Knights Templar, and received the Illustrious Order of the Red Cross, Knight of Malta, and the Order of the Temple on the same evening, December 1, 1914. He served the Commandery for one year as Warden.


He is a Scottish Rite Mason of the Thirty-second degree, and is affiliated with Cambridge Lodge of Perfection; Cambridge Council, Princes of Jerusalem; Cambridge Chapter, Rose Croix de H. R. D. M., of the Valley of Cambridge, and Scioto Con- sistory, Sublime Princes of the Royal Secret, Valley of Co- lumbus. He is a member of Muskingum County Association, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Masons, and served as its President in 1920.


He is affiliated with Aladdin Temple, A. A. O. N. M. S., of Columbus, and Amrou Grotto, No. 45, M. O. V. P. E. R., of this city.


He has served as President of the Zavi Shrine Club since December, 1919.


He resides at 606 Laurel Avenue.


On January 30, the Lodge conducted the funeral services of Bro. Thomas Swan, a former officer, whose remains were laid to rest in Woodlawn Cemetery.


On June 7, the dues of all members serving in either the army or navy during the World War were ordered remitted during their term of service.


On June 21, a picnic in honor of St. John the Baptist was held at the Fair grounds. The program consisted of a parade over the principal streets, a flag-raising at the Fair grounds, and a basket picnic. Bro. Tileston F. Spangler made the principal

address of the afternoon. Following the patriotic service, games and contests of various kinds were enjoyed by the large number of Brethren and their families who were present.


On Sunday, June 24, a joint Communication of Amity and La Fayette Lodges was held for the purpose of dedicating a statue of Bro. George Washington in the Memorial Park at Black Run. A special train over the Pennsylvania Railroad was used to convey the two Lodges and Cyrene Commandery, No. 10, Knights Templar, to their destination. The principal address was made by R .. W .. Bro. Henry M. Hagelbarger, Deputy Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Ohio. The statue was the work of Bro. Brice Baughman, of Black Run. Following the unveiling, the Brethren returned to this city and proceeded to the Pilgrim Evangelical Church, Seventh and South Streets, where Bro. Richard R. Fillibrandt, the pastor, delivered an appropriate sermon in keeping with St. John's Day.


On September 6, the time for holding the Annual Communica- tion, was changed from December to November.


At this meeting a Committee was appointed to investigate and report to the Lodge upon the question of purchasing from the family of J. Hope Sutor a history of the Lodge. This Com- mittee failed to make a report.


Fifty-four meetings were held this year and twenty-nine were raised to the degree of Master Mason. Three were admitted to membership by dimit. The annual return showed a membership of four hundred and sixty-one.


On November 1, the ninety-third election of officers was held, and the following officers were selected for the ensuing year: Bro. Charles E. Zimmer, Worshipful Master; Bro. 1918 BRO. CHARLES E. ZIMMER WORSHIPFUL MASTER


Brother Zimmer was born at Adamsville, Muskingum County, Ohio, June 4, 1872. He attended the public schools of Adamsville, and the School of Pharmacy at Scio, Ohio. He came to Zanesville in 1902, and after two years in the employ of the Baird Drug Store he entered the drug business for himself at Putnam Avenue and Pierce Streets, where he is now located.


On November 6, 1906, he was united in marriage to Miss Anna L. Moore, and to this union one daughter, Bernice Zimmer, was born.


Brother Zimmer was initiated an Entered Apprentice in La Fayette Lodge March 20, 1913; passed to the degree of Fellow Craft June 12, 1913, and raised to the degree of Master Mason July 24, 1913. He served the Lodge as Senior Deacon, 1915; Junior Warden, 1916; Senior Warden, 1917, and Worshipful Master, 1918.


He is a member of Zanesville Chapter, No. 9, Royal Arch Masons, and received the degrees as follows: Mark Master, March 23, 1914; Past Master, April 13, 1914; Most Excellent Master, April 20, 1914, and Royal Arch, April 22, 1914.


He is a member of Zanesville Council, No. 12, Royal and Select Masters, receiving the Cryptic degrees October 8, 1914, and was greeted a Super-Excellent Master March 9, 1915.


He received the Chivalric degrees in Cyrene Commandery, No. 10, Knights Templar, as follows: Illustrious Order of the Red Cross and Knight of Malta, July 27, 1915, and the Order of the Temple, August 3, 1915.

On May 7, a complete set of dishes were procured by the Masonic Bodies of Zanesville at a cost of one hundred and sixty- two dollars and twenty-five cents.


Forty-two meetings were held during the year, and twenty- two were raised to the degree of Master Mason. Two were ad- mitted to membership by dimit. The annual return showed a list of four hundred and eighty-two members.


This was a very prosperous year for the Lodge, considering the fact that fifty-five of its members were serving with the army or navy in the World War, and others were expecting the call at any moment. The entire country was swept by an epi- demic of influenza and, although the Lodge lost very few mem- bers from this source, hardly a family existed but what some member of it was afflicted by this scourge.


On November 7, the ninety-fourth election was held and re- sulted in the choice of the following officers: Bro. Orrin Pearson, Worshipful Master; Bro. Charles F. Lewellyn, Senior Warden; Bro. J. Sherman White, Junior Warden; Bro. Wilber J. Menden- hall, Treasurer; Bro. Samuel R. Moore, Secretary; Bro. Ward W. Weiss, Senior Deacon; Bro. Clarence E. O'Neal, Junior Deacon, and Bro. Leo C. Hufford, Tyler.


Bro. Charles E. Zimmer was elected Trustee for three years. Bro. Harrie C. Atherton was appointed Senior Steward; Bro. Harry C. Smith, Junior Steward, and Bro. Frank L. D. Ferrel, Chaplain.

1919 BRO. ORRIN PEARSON WORSHIPFUL MASTER


Brother Pearson was born at Chandlersville, Muskingum County, Ohio, January 8, 1889. He attended the grade and high school of that place, coming to Zanesville on August 4, 1904. On Christmas day of that year he entered the mailing room of the Zanesville Signal, and with the exception of about three years, his entire life since then has been spent in some branch of news- paper work. At the present time he is connected with the office of the Zanesville Publishing Company, in the capacity of bookkeeper.


On May 28, 1917, he was united in marriage to Miss Emma E. Speed, of near Zanesville, and to this union three children have been born: Anita Beverly, William Howard, and Mar- guerite Phyllis Pearson.


Brother Pearson was initiated an Entered Apprentice in La Fayette Lodge July 11, 1912; passed to the degree of Fellow Craft August 13, 1912, and raised to the degree of Master Mason September 19, 1912. He served the Lodge as Junior Deacon, 1915; Senior Deacon, 1916; Junior Warden, 1917; Senior War- den, 1918, and Worshipful Master, 1919.

He received the Capitular degrees in Zanesville Chapter, No. 9, Royal Arch Masons, as follows: Mark Master, January 23, 1913; Past Master, February 10, 1913; Most Excellent Master, February 17, 1913, and Royal Arch, February 24, 1913. He served as Grand Master of the Second Veil by appointment dur- ing the remainder of 1913; Principal Sojourner, 1914; Scribe, 1915; King, 1916, and High Priest, 1917. Upon the retirement of Bro. J. Allen Hunter as Secretary, in July, 1918, he was ap- pointed to that office, and has been re-elected each succeeding year. He was anointed and set apart to the Holy Order of High Priesthood at Toledo, October 3, 1917.


He received the Cryptic degrees in Zanesville Council, No. 12, Royal and Select Masters, June 12, 1913, and was greeted a Super-Excellent Master November 26, 1913. He served the Council as Deputy Master, 1915, and Thrice Illustrious Master, 1916. He has served the Council as Recorder since December, 1918.


On September 1, 1917, he was appointed and commissioned Grand Representative of the Grand Council of Colorado, near the Grand Council of Ohio.

On February 5, the By-laws were revised, raising the fee for degrees to sixty-five dollars and placing the salary of the Secre- tary upon a pro rata basis, with a minimum of two hundred dollars per annum.


On Sunday, October 12, a joint meeting of Amity and La Fayette Lodges was held for the purpose of participating in the ceremonies of laying the corner-stone of the new Young Men's Christian Association building by the Grand Lodge of Ohio. The Lodge was opened in the Entered Apprentice degree, at 2.30 P. M. Visiting delegations began to arrive early in the morning, and by noon the city was thronged by Masons from other cities. The first floor of the Temple was utilized as a place of registra- tion, while the high-school building had been secured as head- quarters for the visiting Lodges. The parade, which preceded the laying of the corner-stone, was composed of six divisions, each headed by a band, and when the ranks were opened to per- mit the Grand Lodge officers to pass through, presented two solid lines extending from Elberon Avenue to the site of the Y. M. C. A., on South Fifth Street.
