Cyrene Commandery, No. 10, Knights Templar, headed by its Eminent Commander, Sir Knight David D. Jones, acted as escort.


Fifty-one meetings were held during the year. Forty-seven were raised to the degree of Master Mason, and three were ad- mitted to membership on dimit.


The ninety-fifth Annual Communication and election of officers was held November 6, resulting the choice of the following Brethren: Bro. Charles F. Lewellyn, Worshipful Master; Bro. J. BRO. CHARLES FRANKLIN LEWELLYN


WORSHIPFUL MASTER


Brother Lewellyn was born at Roseville, Muskingum County, Ohio, August 27, 1876. His early years were spent upon a farm and in attending the public school. After attaining his majority, he served an apprenticeship as carpenter, which trade he fol- lowed until 1912, when he entered the contracting business. Since that time he has erected a large number of private dwellings

in this city and Columbus, and for the past eight years has been in charge of the building operations of the Zanesville Malleable Company, of this city.


On March 10, 1897, he was united in marriage to Miss Bertha Mae Weaver, and to this union have been born the following children : Lillian L., Sylvia M., and Robert Duane Lewellyn.


Bro. Lewellyn was initiated an Entered Apprentice in La Fayette Lodge November 12, 1914; passed to the degree of Fellow Craft December 7, 1914, and raised to the degree of Mas- ter Mason January 21, 1915. He served the Lodge as Senior Deacon, 1917; Junior Warden, 1918; Senior Warden, 1919, and Worshipful Master, 1920. He served two years as a member of the Board of Governors of the Masonic Club, and was active in the organization of the Past Masters' Association of the Eighteenth District.


He is a member of Zanesville Chapter, No. 9, Royal Arch Masons, receiving the Mark Master degree July 12, 1915; Past and Most Excellent Masters, July 16, 1915, and Royal Arch, July 17, 1915. He served the Chapter as Grand Master of the First Veil, 1916; Grand Master of the Third Veil, 1917; Royal Arch Captain, 1918; Captain of the Host, 1919; Scribe, 1920; King, 1921, and High Priest, 1922. He received the Order of High Priesthood at Springfield, October 4, 1922.


He received the Cryptic degrees in Zanesville Council, No. 12, Royal and Select Masters, November 17, 1915, and was greeted a Super-Excellent Master November 18, 1915. He is serving the Council, at the present time, as Steward.


He received the Chivalric degrees in Cyrene Commandery, No. 10, Knights Templar, as follows: Illustrious Order of the Red Cross and Malta, September 27, 1921, and the Order of the Temple, November 1, 1921. He served the Commandery as Standard Bearer, 1924; Junior Warden, 1925, and at the present time is Senior Warden.


He is affiliated with Amrou Grotto, No. 45, M. O. V. P. E. R. He resides at 1031 Maysville Avenue.


Bro. Samuel R. Moore, the venerable Secretary, had been failing in health for some time, and, on April 8, Bro. Wilber J.

Mendenhall was appointed by the Worshipful Master to look after his duties.


On November 4, a Committee was appointed by the Wor- shipful Master consisting of Bro. Frank L. D. Ferrel, Bro. Cecil W. Tanner, Bro. Harry S. McClelland, Bro. Charles E. Zimmer, Bro. Orrin Pearson, and the District Lecturer, Bro. Elmer A. Evans, to confer with a like Committee from the Lodge of Amity for the purpose of organizing a Past Masters' Association for the Eighteenth Masonic District.


Fifty-seven meetings were held during the year. Fifty-four were raised to the degree of Master Mason, and nine were ad- mitted to membership by dimit. This is the largest increase in membership the Lodge has enjoyed since its organization. The annual returns showed a membership of five hundred and fifty- two.


The ninety-sixth Annual Communication was held on No- vember 4, and resulted in the election of the following officers: Bro. J. Sherman White, Worshipful Master; Bro. Clarence E. O'Neal, Senior Warden; Bro. Harry C. Smith, Junior Warden; Bro. Clarence W. Simpson, Treasurer; Bro. Wilber J. Menden- hall, Secretary; Bro. Thomas J. Hoare, Senior Deacon; Bro. Paul R. Bro. Charles F. Lewellyn was elected Trustee for three years. Bro. Samuel R. Moore declined re-election as Secretary, on ac- count of ill health and advanced age, and was elected Secretary- emeritus for life, with the remission of all dues.


Bro. Chester Dickerson was appointed Senior Steward; Bro. Samuel R. Torrance, Junior Steward; Bro. Albert H. Ungemach, Organist, and Bro. John S. Black, Chaplain.


These officers were publicly installed, December 9, by Bro. Charles F. Lewellyn, assisted by Bro. Frank A. Kelly as Grand Marshal. The ceremonies were followed by a program and banquet.

John Sherman White


1921 BRO. JOHN SHERMAN WHITE WORSHIPFUL MASTER


Brother White was born at Barnesville, Belmont County, Ohio, September 20, 1871. His early years were spent on a farm, during which time he attended school in District Seven, of Goshen Township. He located in Zanesville in 1912. He is a skilled mechanic, being especially proficient in the trades of plumbing and stationary engineering. Since the beginning of the World War, he has been employed by the Zanesville Malleable Company as millwright.


On November 16, 1893, he was united in marriage to Miss Annabelle Stephen, and to this union have been born two chil- dren, Harry R. and Olive B. White.


Brother White was initiated an Entered Apprentice in La Fayette Lodge March 12, 1914; passed to the degree of Fellow Craft May 14, 1914, and raised to the degree of Master Mason June 11, 1914. He served the Lodge as Junior Steward, 1917; Junior Deacon, 1918; Junior Warden, 1919; Senior Warden, 1920, and Worshipful Master, 1921. He is now serving his third year on the Board of Governors of the Masonic Club.


He is a member of Zanesville Chapter, No. 9, Royal Arch Masons, receiving his degrees as follows: Mark Master, Febru- ary 10, 1919; Past and Most Excellent Masters, February 17, 1919, and Royal Arch, February 24, 1919.


He is a member of Amrou Grotto, No. 45, M. O. V. P. E. R. He resides at 1160 Wheeling Avenue.


On July 7, a request was received from Muskingum Lodge, No. 368, asking for permission to remove their Lodge from Uniontown corporation to East Fultonham, which request was granted.


Fifty-two meetings were held this year. Forty-six were raised to the Master Mason degree, and six were admitted to member- ship. The annual return showed a membership of six hundred and seven.

1922 BRO. CLARENCE EUGENE O'NEAL WORSHIPFUL MASTER


Brother O'Neal was born at East Greenwood, Muskingum County, Ohio, November 26, 1888. He attended the public schools of Norwich and New Concord, and also Muskingum College. His first employment was with the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company in 1906, and since that time the greater part of his life has been spent in railroad and traffic work. In 1910, he removed to Akron, where he entered the employ of the Dia- mond Rubber Company, remaining with them until 1913, when he removed to Zanesville and again secured employment with the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company as clerk in the freight office. In 1916, he severed his connection with this company to accept a similar position with the Pennsylvania Railroad Company, remaining with them until March, 1920, when he accepted his present position of traffic manager for the American Clay Products Company of this city.

Clarence Eugene O'Neal


On November 1, 1910, he was united in marriage with Miss Laura A. Bell, of New Concord, and to this union a daughter, Anna Mary O'Neal, has been born.


Brother O'Neal was initiated an Entered Apprentice June 17, 1912; passed to the degree of Fellow Craft July 17, 1912, and raised to the degree of Master Mason August 19, 1912, in Ado- niram Lodge, No. 517, of Akron, Ohio. He affiliated with La Fayette Lodge February 1, 1917. He served the Lodge as Senior Steward, 1918; Junior Deacon, 1919; Junior Warden, 1920; Senior Warden, 1921, and Worshipful Master, 1922. He served two years on the Board of Governors of the Masonic Club.


In 1922, he served as Secretary to M .. W .. Bro. Frank M. Ransbottom, Grand Master of Ohio. On May 25, 1922, he was appointed and commissioned Grand Representative of the Grand Lodge of Virginia, near the Grand Lodge of Ohio.


He received the Capitular degrees in Zanesville Chapter, No. 9, Royal Arch Masons, as follows: Mark, Past, and Most Ex- cellent Masters, September 29, 1913, and Royal Arch, October 13, 1913. He served the Chapter as Grand Master of the Second Veil, 1914; Royal Arch Captain, 1915; Scribe, 1916; King, 1917; and High Priest, 1918. He received the Order of High Priest- hood at Toledo in October, 1919.


He received the Cryptic degrees in Zanesville Council, No. 12, Royal and Select Masters, November 26, 1913, and was greeted a Super-Excellent Master the same evening. He served the Council as Conductor of Council, 1914, and Thrice Illustrious Master, 1915. He served as Recorder, 1917 and 1918.


He was elected Grand Sentinel of the Grand Council, Royal and Select Masters of Ohio, at their Annual Assembly held in Columbus, October 2, 1923; Grand Marshal, at Cincinnati, September 30, 1924, and Grand Steward, at Akron, September 29, 1925, which office he now holds. He was appointed and com- missioned Grand Representative of the Grand Council of South Dakota, near the Grand Council of Ohio, November 28, 1924.


He is a member of Cyrene Commandery, No. 10, Knights Templar, receiving the Illustrious Order of the Red Cross and Knight of Malta April 29, 1924, and the Order of the Temple May 13, 1924.

He is a Scottish Rite Mason of the Thirty-second degree, receiving the degrees as follows: Fourth to Fourteenth, in Cam- bridge Lodge of Perfection, March 30, 1916; Fifteenth and Sixteenth in Cambridge Council, Princes of Jerusalem, and the Seventeenth and Eighteenth in Cambridge Chapter, Rose Croix de H. R. D. M., April 13, 1916; Nineteenth to Thirty-second in Scioto Consistory, Sublime Princes of the Royal Secret, Co- lumbus, Ohio, April 21, 1916. He was elected Senior Warden of Cambridge Chapter, Rose Croix de H. R. D. M., in April, 1919, and has served in this capacity since that time. He is a member of Muskingum County Association, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Masons, and has served as its Secretary-Treasurer since November 10, 1920.


He is also affiliated with Amrou Grotto, M. O. V. P. E. R., of Zanesville, and Aladdin Temple, A. A. O. N. M. Shrine, of Co- lumbus.


He resides at 948 Lexington Avenue.


On June 25 (Sunday), the Lodge attended divine services at the Grace Methodist Episcopal Church of which R .. W .. Bro. Thomas T. Crawford, Grand Chaplain of the Grand Lodge of Ohio, was pastor. A special invitation was issued to every Lodge within a radius of twenty miles, and more than eighteen Lodges were present. A Lodge of Master Masons was opened with M .:. W .:. Bro. Frank M. Ransbottom, Grand Master, presiding, after which the Brethren formed in procession and marched to the church.


During this year the Lodge inaugurated the custom of send- ing out a monthly bulletin.


Forty-eight meetings were held during the year. Thirty received the Master Mason degree, and three were admitted to membership. The annual return to the Grand Lodge showed a list of six hundred and thirty-eight members.


On November 2, the ninety-eighth election was held and the following officers were elected: Bro. Paul R. Perry, Worshipful Master; Bro. Samuel R. Torrance, Senior Warden; Bro. Clarence S. 1923 BRO. PAUL RAYMOND PERRY WORSHIPFUL MASTER


Brother Perry was born at Salesville, Guernsey County, Ohio, August 13, 1893. He came with his parents to Zanesville when one year old, and has since resided here. He received his educa- tion in the public schools and the Zanesville High School, gradu- ating from the latter in 1913. After leaving school, he accepted a position with the First National Bank, with which institution he is still associated in the capacity of Assistant Cashier. On April 4, 1917, he was united in marriage to Miss Helen M. Bolin, and to this union have been born the following children: Mary Louise and Mark Bolin Perry.


Brother Perry was initiated an Entered Apprentice in La Fayette Lodge October 8, 1914; passed to the degree of Fellow Craft November 9, 1914, and raised to the degree of Master Mason December 17, 1914. He served the Lodge as Junior Deacon, 1916, and again in 1921; Senior Warden, 1922, and Worshipful Master, 1923. He served two years as a member of the Board of Governors of the Masonic Club.


He received the degree of Mark Master March 8, 1915; Past Master, March 15, 1915; Most Excellent Master, March 22, 1915, and Royal Arch, March 29, 1915, in Zanesville Chapter, No. 9, Royal Arch Masons.


He is a member of Zanesville Council, No. 12, Royal and Select Masters, and received the Royal and Select Masters de- grees April 8, 1915. He was greeted a Super-Excellent Master at a Special Assembly of this Council, held at McConnelsville, May 20, 1915.

He is a member of Amrou Grotto, No. 45, M. O. V. P. E. R., and is serving the present year as its Monarch.


He resides at 363 West Main Street.


On March 1, a resolution was adopted whereby the fee for degrees was raised from sixty-five to seventy-five dollars, and the annual dues from five to six dollars.


On Sunday evening, June 24, the Lodge united with the Lodge of Amity, in the celebration of St. John's Day, by attending divine services at the Putnam Presbyterian Church.


On October 4, a resolution was adopted requiring the pay- ment of annual dues in advance.


On October 26, the Lodge conducted the funeral services of Bro. John L. Mercer, a former Master. Services were held at the home, in Trinway, with burial in Greenwood Cemetery.


Forty-seven meetings were held during this year. Twenty- eight were raised to the degree of Master Mason, and two were admitted to membership. The annual return showed a list of six hundred and fifty-five members in good standing.

On Sunday evening, December 30, the Lodge joined with the Lodge of Amity and attended divine services at the Fair Oaks Baptist Church, on Maysville Avenue. The pastor, Bro. Harry B. Hazen, delivered the sermon.

Samuel Robert Torrance


1924 BRO. SAMUEL ROBERT TORRANCE WORSHIPFUL MASTER


Brother Torrance was born at Cumberland, Muskingum County, Ohio, September 20, 1889. His family removed to Zanesville when he was eleven years of age. He attended the public schools of Cumberland and Zanesville until fourteen years of age, when he secured employment with the Jones Gro- cery, in Putnam. He was connected with various groceries until January 1916, when he entered the grocery business for himself at his present location, on Maysville Avenue.


On August 2, 1911, he was united in marriage to Miss Helen J. Davis, and they reside at 1216 Maysville Avenue.


Brother Torrance was initiated an Entered Apprentice in La Fayette Lodge May 16, 1918; passed to the degree of Fellow Craft June 13, 1918, and raised to the degree of Master Mason July 18, 1918. He served the Lodge as Junior Steward, 1921; Senior Deacon, 1922; Senior Warden, 1923, and Worshipful Master, 1924. He served two years on the Board of Governors of the Masonic Club.


He received the Capitular degrees in Zanesville Chapter, No. 9, Royal Arch Masons, as follows: Mark Master, March 3, 1919; Past Master, March 5, 1919; Most Excellent Master, March 10, 1919, and Royal Arch, March 17, 1919. He served the Chapter as Grand Master of the Third Veil, 1924; Royal Arch Captain, 1925, and during the present year is Principal So- journer.


He received the degrees of Royal and Select Masters March 19, 1919, in Zanesville Council, No. 12, Royal and Select Masters, and was greeted a Super-Excellent Master March 20, 1919.


He is a member of Cyrene Commandery, No. 10, Knights Templar, receiving the Illustrious Order of the Red Cross and Knight of Malta March 22, 1921, and the Order of the Temple March 29, 1921.


He is also affiliated with Amrou Grotto, No. 45, M. O. V. P. E. R.


On March 6, the newly organized Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, was granted the use of the Lodge room.

On April 3, the Worshipful Master appointed Bro. Orrin Pearson, Bro. Clarence E. O'Neal, and Bro. Paul R. Perry a General Committee to plan for a suitable celebration to be held May 25, 1925, the one hundredth anniversary of the organization of the Lodge.


On May 1, the salary of the Secretary was raised to fifty cents per member for each calendar year.


The annual returns showed a list of six hundred and eighty- six members.


Forty-one meetings were held and thirty-eight were raised to the degree of Master Mason.


The report of the Auditing Committee, made at the one hundredth Annual Communication, November 6, showed that the Lodge was practically free of indebtedness, with assets amounting to twenty-four thousand, nine hundred and ninety- one dollars and ninety-eight cents.

1925 BRO. CLARENCE S. LUCAS WORSHIPFUL MASTER


Brother Lucas was born in Zanesville, November 20, 1895. He secured his education in the public schools. After com- pleting his studies, he entered the designing room of the Amer- ican Encaustic Tiling Company, where he remained for two years. For the past ten years he has been connected with the Bessey Granite Company, first in the capacity of designer

and builder and later as superintendent, which position he now fills.


On June 8, 1922, he was united in marriage to Miss Edna M. Slack, of this city, and they reside at 351 West Main Street.


Brother Lucas was initiated an Entered Apprentice in La Fayette Lodge January 18, 1917; passed to the degree of Fellow Craft February 15, 1917, and raised to the degree of Master Mason March 29, 1917. He served the Lodge as Junior Deacon, 1922; Junior Warden, 1923; Senior Warden, 1924, and Worshipful Master, 1925. He is now serving his third year on the Board of Governors of the Masonic Club.


He received the Capitular degrees in Zanesville Chapter, No. 9, Royal Arch Masons, as follows: Mark Master and Past Master, March 5, 1919; Most Excellent Master, March 17, 1919, and Royal Arch, March 17, 1919.


He is a member of Zanesville Council, No. 12, Royal and Select Masters, and received the degrees of Royal and Select Masters March 19, 1919, and was greeted a Super-Excellent Master March 20, 1919. He served the Council as Conductor of Council, 1925, and is now serving in the capacity of Captain of the Guard.


He is a member of Cyrene Commandery, No. 10, Knights Templar, receiving the Illustrious Order of the Red Cross, Knight of Malta, and the Order of the Temple December 7, 1920.


He is also affiliated with Amrou Grotto, No. 45, M. O. V. P. E. R.


On April 2, Bro. Orrin Pearson, Chairman of the Centennial Committee, read portions of a historical sketch of the Lodge which he had prepared, and volunteered to complete the history provided the Lodge would publish it in book form. The propo- sition was unanimously accepted.


On April 15, the Lodge conducted the funeral services of Bro. Samuel R. Moore, who at the time of his death was the oldest living member and had served the Lodge thirty-three consecutive years as Secretary. Services were conducted at the home, on McIntire Avenue, with burial in Greenwood Ceme- tery.

History of La Fayette Lodge


OUR CENTENNIAL


On Thursday, May 21, 1925, the centenary of La Fayette Lodge was celebrated in a manner befitting the occasion. Al- though not held on the anniversary of its institution, no effort was spared by the Committee-in-charge to make the day one long to be remembered in the annals of the Lodge. The weather was perfect; and early in the day a Committee, composed of the wives of the officers of the Lodge, assembled in the ballroom of the Masonic Temple, in readiness to register the visiting ladies. These ladies were later entertained by an automobile tour of the city, and a visit to the Zane Pottery, at South Zanesville, where suitable souvenirs had been provided. Upon their return, they were entertained with a theater party at the Liberty Theater.


At one-thirty o'clock a Lodge of Entered Apprentices was opened by the officers of the Lodge, and following the introduc- tion of distinguished visitors and the initiation of one candidate, a Masonic address was delivered by M .. W .. Bro. Ike M. Robin- son, Past Grand Master, of Chandlersville. At the conclusion of this address, a reception was held for the visiting Brethren.
