To Steubenville, Mr. Erwine represented more than an edu- cator. He was past president of Steubenville Rotary Club;

Member Board of Directors, Y.M.C.A .; Member Board of Di- rectors of Fort Steuben Council of Boy Scouts; Chairman of the Area Court of Honor; Member Advisory Board Central Hospital Association; Board of Directors of Civic Music; Past Director of Steubenville Chamber of Commerce; Leader in successful Community Fund Campaign 1937; Member of American Association of School Administrators and of the Ohio Education Association; Speaker on Civic, Educational and Religious subjects: President of the Official Board of the First Methodist Church and active in Scottish Rite Masonry.

Born in Zanesville, Ohio, May 3rd, 1885, he is married and has four sons. He attended Zanesville elementary and high schools. Graduating from Ohio Wesleyan University with a degree of Bachelor of Literature, he received high honors in history and economics. He immediately became an instructor at the Delaware, Ohio, University, where he taught for three years. Then followed post graduate work at Wittenberg College and Columbia and Wisconsin Universities, during which period he added the degree of Master of Arts.

Mr. Erwine was appointed Assistant Superintendent of Schools at Akron, Ohio, serving from 1925 until 1932.

Prompt to recognize the potential sudden educational strain placed on present facilities by Government grants of $28,000,000 in Euclid for National Defense purposes, with an increase of approximately 8,000 workers, he filed a request through the State Department of Education for a Government grant of $875,000 for the purpose of building a new Euclid high school. Preliminary surveys indicate the need of com- mercial and technical courses, and it is tentatively proposed to add these to the college preparatory curriculum. In May. 1941, a questionnaire at Euclid-Central resulted in sixty-nine percent of Senior high-school male students stating they would have followed a technical course if an opportunity had been given. Only twenty-one percent showed a preference for col- lege preparatory work, and ten percent for commercial. Pro- posed courses include Art and ceramics; automobile repair; electricity; printing and graphic arts; machine shop and welding; mechanical drawing; sheet metal and art metal and woodworking.

EUCLID HEALTH CENTER

T WENTY years ago, - on June 12, 1921 - a group of civic- minded citizens of Euclid met and discussed plans for a health center in the community. At this meeting J. M. Page was elected president, and at the next meeting - on September 12 - a committee was appointed to meet with Council and ask for their aid and cooperation.

The Euclid Health Center opened its doors to the public on February 8, 1922. Four community clubs, Euclid Central, Shore, Roosevelt and Noble, supplied necessary funds for equipment, and Dr. Robert Lockhart of the County Board of Health supplied a nurse for one day a week. A baby specialist was obtained for the Child Welfare Clinics which met every Wednesday. alternating between Noble and Roosevelt Schools.

The first tonsil and adenoid clinic was held at Roosevelt School July 12, 1922, with 30 youngsters being operated by physicians from Cleveland. The largest clinic in Cuyahoga County was held June 4, 1929, with 96 patients operated on and home in bed by eight o'clock that same night. Between the years 1922 and 1930 a total of 396 children had tonsils and adenoids removed.

With a change in the constitution in 1932 the Parent-Teacher groups of Euclid were included, and who have actively cooper- ated since that time. Between the years of 1930 and 1937, children were taken to Cleveland hospitals for 436 successful tonsilectomies, when arrangements were made with the new Boulevard hospital, and in that year 45 Euclid children were taken care of with three local physicians, Doctors Hammill, Skur and Bost operating. With the operations for the present fiscal year not yet available June, 1941, 933 successful tonsilec- tomies have been supervised by the Center, with only a small nominal charge, or no fee if the family income was insufficient.

A dental clinic was opened at Roosevelt School on the Health Center's second birthday. The following year, on its third anniversary, the new Health Center building at Euclid Park was opened to the children. The building was donated for use by the City of Euclid, and a new dental chair had been pur- chased by the Shore Community Club. During 1936 a dental survey was conducted, with 1,730 elementary school children examined. This survey showed an average of 4.5 diseased

teeth for each child. There were only 185 with teeth in good condition, 808 permanent teeth were missing, 476 permanent teeth to be extracted, and 5,334 permanent teeth in need of dental care. Subsequent surveys have followed, and for the present fiscal year in 2,897 children examined, there were found 11,120 cavities, about ninety percent of which were permanent teeth. There were 2,622 children requiring dental care. For the eight months of the present fiscal year 113 dental clinics have so far been held, and 3,837 children examined. Free work for this period totals $622.00 and will probably exceed $1,000 by the end of the term.

Eye clinics were opened at both clinics in 1926. In 1937, a total of 102 pairs of glasses were purchased, and for eight months of the present fiscal year 58 children have been sup- plied. The Lions Club of Euclid became interested in this phase of child welfare work in 1934, and has purchased 62 pairs of glasses for the underprivileged children of Euclid alone.

Thirty-six child welfare clinics have been held during the present year.

In cooperation with the Anti-Tuberculosis League, children have been examined by physicians using the fluoroscopic trailer presented by the American Legion Posts of Cuyahoga County, and X-rays advised or close observation followed in all necessary cases. With a quota for the Christmas season of 1940 of $700.00 in Anti-Tuberculosis seals, the Euclid Health Center cleared $934.00. The Center also has charge of the sale of Easter seals in Euclid for benefit of crippled and disabled children in Cuyahoga County.

A round-up of all pre-school children eligible for the next Fall term took place in June, and during the same month a preliminary tonsil clinic was held.

Euclid Health Center is aided by the City, which works with the County Board of Health, the School Board, which helps with the Eye and Dental Clinics, and with donations of the clubs represented on the Board and others interested in the Center. Endless hours of time and work are given by Board members and interested groups, and Euclid may well be proud of its splendid accomplishments.

EUCLID PARK AND CLUBHOUSE

B REASTING Lake Erie, with a splendid community-house, bathing beach and a fisherman's paradise, Euclid Park is recognized as one of the finest community centers in Ohio. Originally acquired as a site for a sewage disposal plant, intersected by a creek and covered with underbrush and weeds, its seventeen acres supported but two dilapidated, out- moded and unsafe buildings.

The facilities of the clubhouse are available to all civic

organizations and others having a commendable purpose. These are in almost constant demand. The plan includes two large dining-rooms, one of which is available on occasion to organizations. A kitchen is well-equipped and a modern heat- ing plant has been installed, while smaller groups may gather around a huge log fire on chilly evenings.

Entrance to the park is at Lake Shore Boulevard and East 222nd Street. The park conceals from view a modern disposal plant.

NEWLY EXPANDED PLANT of Addressograph - Multigraph Corporation

Business growth, like city growth, requires foresighted planning for the future.

The results of such planning were in action in 1931 when Addressograph - Multigraph Cor- poration broke ground for its home offices and plant on Babbitt Road in Euclid.

The same far-reaching policy was carried into effect still further by the recent erection of a large new addition to the plant.

In announcing plans for this expansion to the company's worldwide organization, Joseph E. Rogers, President and General Manager, said:

"Our expansion project will put

us in the position of doing our full part in the Defense Program, and at the same time will enlarge our facilities for serving the increasing requirements of our own business. I can assure you that plans for the growth of this business call for expansion far beyond what many may imagine."

The plant addition, which cov- ers nearly three acres, was started on April 7, 1941. Three months later, to the day, the first manu- facturing operations got under way in the new structure, which was entirely completed and in full operation by October 15, 1941.

Together with other plants, in- creasing steadily in size and number, Addressograph - Multi- graph headquarters exemplify

Euclid's growing importance as an industrial center.

A large number of the men and women who work here live in the City of Euclid. They and their families contribute and share in the civic, social and economic advancement of this community.

The broad lines of Addresso- graph - Multigraph products are essential aids to the efficient and profitable operation of business. The methods which these products put into effect are used for impor- tant procedures in all departments of every kind and size of business.

AUTOMOBILE ACCIDENT

In the name of humanity, if you witness an injury to anyone don't ever pick up the injured person, with idea of putting into a car and rushing to a hospital or physician. Un- less you are absolutely certain that the injury is very slight you should not attempt to handle the injured at all. For the untrained person to attempt to move the injured may result in an irreparable harm rather than good.

NEVER run automobile engine in closed garage; OPEN DOORS WIDE.

NEVER crawl under car with engine running, EVEN if the car is in open air.

NEVER sit in closed car with engine running, EVEN if in ventilated garage.

NEVER sit in closed car with engine running and all windows shut, EVEN if car is in open air. Always have windows open.

Have car inspected frequently by a responsible person to keep it in fit running condition.
