Electric lights and gas, and any unshaded lamp, should be tab ood from a dinner table. Side lights, shaded with colored butterflies, make effective illumination, with candles, also shaded, on the table. No top lights.
In addressing a letter either write "Isaac Pond New- ton," or "I. P. Newton," not "Isaac P. Newton " This is a matter of taste, but it certainly looks better to see either birth names or both initials.
Never use the word ' barn " for a stable, nor "span " for a pair of horses, nor "depot " for a railroad station.
Many mothers and fathers speak of their daughters as "Miss Mary " and "Miss Susan." Only to servants- should this be done. There is nothing more countrified than for a man who knows a whole family well, and is received by them as a friend, to go about speaking of " Miss Jane Brown " or ' Miss Anna Smith." And never ! Never ! whatever you do, speak of your sister or your fiancee as "Miss Anybody." If you are engaged to Mary Jennings, and are announcing the fact, don't say you are going to marry "Miss " Mary Jennings, but give her name out plain Mary Jennings
When telephoning it is better to deliver your invitation first, instead of asking the party "What are you going to do to-night ? " you are many times told there is an engage- ment for the evening, when if they knew what you were going to say it would be different.
A woman should never help a well man on with his coat.
Gentlemen ought not to appear in high hat and tan shoes at the same time.
There is really no difference either in a lady's or gen- tleman's dress at a ball or " big dinner."
Never wear a hat or bonnet after seven o'clock in the evening, unless you are going somewhere in a street car or

omnibus. At the theaters hats are removed, and there is no need of spoiling one's hair by putting them on.
A certain latitude regarding evening dress for men has been growing of late and is not confined to summer. From June to October morning dress is not only permitted, but suggested to men, as being far more appropriate than the regulation evening costume. There are good reasons for this : one is that outings, bicycle trips long rides in street cars and various other out of-door informalities are apt to be proposed and another that an evening dress is never seen in the streets without an overcoat, the discom- fort in hot weather is great
There is also a tendency to be lax about evening dress for men at theaters, and, indeed, anywhere except at formal dinners, when there is no question of its imperativeness.
A servant should never call out "Mrs Brown, may I speak to you a moment ?" or "Mr. Brown, a man wants to speak to you." It is disrespectful. If it is necessary to summon Mr. or Mrs. Brown, the maid should s'and first, in such a way as to attract attention, and be invited to explain her errand. Then she should say : "May I speak to you, madam ?" or "a man wishes to see you, sir."
Champagne and all white wines should be served cold. but the temperation should be lowered in bottle, not in the glass. To cool champagne properly lay the bottle down in a basin, break up a handful of ice, put it on the bottle, sprinkle it with a little salt, and cover it with a wet piece of flannel, two hours before using.
Sauterne and Rhine wines should be moderately cool.
Claret and Burgundy should be drunk milk-warm. This condition is secured by carefully setting the bottle in hot water, and allowing it to remain long enough to gently heat the wine.
Porter and Sherry should never be chilled.
It is often a very convenient place to entertain friends .at a restaurant The principle guest must remember that on such occasions it is her duty to make the move after the

ETIQUETTE NOTES.
meal, instead of its evolving upon the hostess, as it would be in her own home. The reason of this is that the move from the table breaks np the party, and the hostess cannot, for that reason make it. The exception to this rule is when the party has been arranged for "dinner and play." In this case the hostess makes the move at the conclusion of the meal.
Unmarried women and widows have practically no crest. A wife uses that of her husband if she uses any.
In letter writing it is well to remember a few things. No letter is complete without the date. Letters containing directions to servants and tradesmen are written in the third person.
A letter beginning "Sir" or "Madam" ends "Yours truly ; " "Dear Sir" and "Dear Madam " ends "Yours very truly "
The laws of ettiquette do not permit us to use numerals, as 3, 4, 5, but demand that we write out three, four, five. The date should follow the signing of the name, at the lower left hand corner of the letter. The year and day of the month should be expressed in words
Letters of introduction are never sealed.
Elaborately ornamented notepaper, as well as highly perfumed notes, ere vulgar.
When a father dies Jr. is no longer attached to the son's name.
Guests should be served first if they are ladies ; if not, the ladies of the house should first be helped, then the visiting gentlemen.
A bib pin, with the birthday stone for the month in which a child was born is an appropriate gift for a birth- day for an infant, and also two pins to catch up the sleeves on the shoulder.
