Astoria's school system is housed in modern, well equipped buildings. The principal church denominations, leading fraternal organizations, patriotic societies and service clubs are represent- ed in the city's social life. The finest turf athletic field in the state and other playgrounds provide facilities for many outdoor sports. Water sports enthusiasts find ideal conditions for motor boats and sail boats. The Astoria Annual Regatta and Salmon Derby is the outstanding water sports carnival of the Northwest.
At Astoria, is located the huge Tongue Point Naval Base, the second largest of its kind in the United States. The amphib- ious section of the 19th fleet is berthed here.
Astoria is located at the confluence of the Columbia River and Youngs Bay, about ten miles from the mouth of the river. The city is at the junction of two transcontinental motor routes -U. S. Highway No. 30, starting on the Atlantic Coast and ending at Astoria, and U. S. Highway No. 101, parallelling the Pacific Ocean from Mexico to Canada. Other modern, improved highways lead from Astoria into the farming and timber districts of the city's trade area. Passenger stage lines operate on all main highway routes. Railroad service is provided by the Spokane, Portland & Seattle Railroad Company, owned jointly by the Great Northern and Northern Pacific.
9
At the larger waterfront docks ocean liners load for ports around the world. A busy fleet of river craft carries passengers and freight between Astoria and Columbia River towns. Fast, frequent ferry services across the Columbia River connect the highway systems of Oregon and Washington.
Astoria's hotels, restaurants, garages and a modern retail shopping district furnish a complete, satisfactory service to the traveling public.
BASIC INDUSTRIAL RESOURCES
Astoria is the headquarters of the Columbia River fishing industry. Plants located in or near Astoria produce canned, frozen and cured salmon, fish meal and oil with an estimated volue of $30,000,000 annually. Salmon are caught by seines and nets in the Columbia River or by hook and line in the Pacific Ocean. A newly developed industry, steadily growing in eco- nomic importance, is the tuna fishing and packing industry. White meat albacore tuna are caught by deep-sea trollers beyond the mouth of the Columbia River in the Pacific Ocean, and the majority of salmon canneries have facilities for tuna canning also. Pilchards, used for fish meal and oil, are taken with purse seines by boats operating in the Pacific Ocean beyond the three-mile limit. About two thousand boats of various sizes and types are engaged in the Columbia River fishing industry.
Timber, several varieties, all growing to immense size, forms the basis of a large logging and lumbering industry in Clatsop County. Fir, hemlock, spruce, and cedar grow thickly on the slopes of the Coast Range. The logs are hauled by train or motor truck to tidal streams, then towed to Columbia River sawmills. There they are made into every kind of lumber or converted to other wood products, such as veneer, plywood, shingles, pulp and paper, eventually going to markets all over the world.
Agriculture-highly specialized, producing top quality, high value crops-is concentrated mostly along the Columbia River and its tributaries and in coastal river valleys. The principal dairy farms are stocked with disease-free herds of high producing agricultural activity. Dairying is favored by a long period of green pasture, large yields of root and forage crops.
Other important agricultural products are eggs, poultry, bent grass seed, cranberries, bulbs and vegetables. Fresh garden peas are shipped by carloads to eastern markets, where their ex- ceptional quality brings high prices.
10
CLIMATE
The geographical location of Astoria produces a mild, equable climate, spring-like during most of the year. There are no extremes of heat or cold. Temperatures below freezing are usually of only a few days duration and there are no summer "heat waves" or drought periods. The average frostless growing season is nearly ten months. The mean maximum temperature in December is 43. The average annual rainfall is about 76 inches, most of which falls between November 1st and March 31st.
RECREATIONAL ATTRACTIONS
Astoria is at the center of a beach resort recreational area along the Oregon and Washington coasts north and south of the Columbia River. The Clatsop beaches offer the vacationist and tourist unequalled opportunity for rest and recreation. South- ward from the Columbia River for thirty miles reach the smooth, surfwashed sands of the beaches, inviting pleasure seeking humanity to enjoy the variety of attractions with which Nature so richly endowed this section of Oregon.
-
Along this stretch of interesting ocean front are located the resort communities of Seaside, Gearhart and Cannon Beach. There are accommodations to satisfy any individual desire or fit any expense budget-modern hotels, comfortable cottages, auto courts or camping sites. The restaurants and markets offer all kinds of fresh sea food and garden vegetables.
The Pacific Ocean itself is the magnet for many visitors, with the invigorating tang of its salt breezes, the excitement of a plunge in its tumbling waves or the relaxation of basking in the sunshine on its clean, white sandy shore. The ideal summer weather is particularly delightful, with azure sky, soft days, always-cool nights calling for open fires and bringing deep restful slumber. Every season of the year has its own peculiar charms, showing ocean, streams, woods and mountains in a variety of moods and changing colors.
The Astoria Chamber of Commerce maintains an informa- tion service for tourists and others interested in Astoria and Clatsop County. Booklets, maps and other material are available free to inquirers.

SEASIDE
Miscellaneous Information
The City of Seaside is located on Clatsop Beach at the junction of the Necanikum and Wahanna rivers, 85 miles west of Portland via the Wolf Creek Highway. It is the terminus of the Spokane, Portland & Seattle Railway. Seaside is the most important beach resort in the Pacific Northwest on the Pacific Ocean. Seaside has a permanent population of 2,497 (1940 census), with as high as 20,000 during the summer months. Estimates of the permanent population in May, 1946, range from 5,000 to 6,000.
GEARHART Miscellaneous Information
A Post Office on the Spokane, Portland & Seattle Railway ; 15 miles southwest of Astoria, the County Seat, and 12 miles from Seaside, the banking point.
WARRENTON Miscellaneous Information
The City of Warrenton with a population of slightly over 1,500 is located in the northwest section of Clatsop County. The city was incorporated in 1899 and operates under the City Manager plan of government. The Skipanon River, a navigable stream, is used by ocean going vessels for the transportation of lumber and by the local fishing fleet. This stream being located through the industrial district and directly connected to the Columbia insures a fishing industry and sea going commerce to all industries requiring it. There is a complete grade and high school system as well as adequate churches.
Railway transportation is by the Spokane, Portland & Seattle Railway. The present tax rate is comparable to other Clatsop County towns and is lowering each year. This coupled with the fact that Warrenton has some very desirable industrial sites to offer makes the future look good. The bonded indebted- ness of the city has been reduced to the place where one more year will see the city completely debt free.
12
WESTPORT Miscellaneous Information
A Post Office and station on the Columbia River and Spo- kane, Portland & Seattle Railway and Oregon Motor Stages, 71 miles northwest of Portland and 28 miles east of Astoria, the banking point. Clatskanie is also a banking point. It is a lumber center. Mail daily.
