Manufacturing
Portland is the chief industrial center of the State of Oregon, and has become a city of diversified manufacturing, with products ranging from oil burners to swimming suits, flour to furniture, and alu- minum to paper. The 1954 U. S. Census of Manufacturers listed 1,799 separate manufacturing establish- ments employing an average of 57,000 workers for the metropolitan area in that year. Continued in- dustrial expansion since that census makes the present estimate of 2,000 manufacturing plants, employ- ing 60,000 workers.
The metal-working industry, which includes the production of pig aluminum, machinery and equip- ment. electrical appliances, foundry products and other similar items, is Portland's leading industry from the standpoint of employment, being followed by lumber and timber products, food manufacturing, paper and allied products, and textiles and apparel. Othe: industries of importance in the Portland area are furniture production, printing and publishing, and chemical manufacturing. A large number of products manufactured within Portland's industrial area receive national and world-wide distribution. Every day sees new advances in the way of diversification of production in this area, additional utilization of re- sources, and increased manufacturing by local industries.
Financial Center
Portland has been the business center of the Oregon country since the earliest days, when the State name included the whole Pacific Northwest. This city is the Wall Street for this corner of the U. S .. and its banks are the largest and most substantial in the territory. They have a wide reputation for strength and conservative methods. Portland has six banks and trust companies (with branches), some of which are national institutions. The bank clearings of Portland for 1957 totaled $10,219,024,995.
Retail
Here are located some of the finest retail mercantile establishments in the country, both depart- ment stores and specialty shops, featuring all lines of better-class merchandise. The retail trade is drawn from a radius of 40 to 50 miles.
Wholesale
This city is the largest distributing and wholesale center of the Pacific Northwest, covering a ter- ritory of more than 254,000 square miles. Here are located national houses with branches in Seattle and Spokane, managed out of Portland. Portland has one of the largest wholesale drug houses on the Pacific Coast, and the largest dry goods firm in the Pacific Northwest.
Headquarters of the grocery distributing, dry goods, knitting and jobbing industries are here. This is the center of the textile wholesale trade, and the distributing point for the automotive trades, as well as for agricultural implements, hardware, drugs and industrial machinery.
Library
Portland is the seat of the Multnomah County Library. This, with 16 branches gives easy access to its privileges from every portion of the city. Its cir "ilating rural libraries throughout the entire county, and affiliations with suburban communities, make this institution unique among American libraries. A feature of the main building is a series of commodious halls, available without charge for meetings of a civic or development nature. More than 100 organizations regularly avail themselves of this opportunity The circulation in a recent year was 2,200,443 volumes; the registered borrowers, 153,680.

TN ADDITION to names and addresses, your City Direc- 4 tory contains much detailed information concerning the people of your community. In order to list this information certain symbols and designations have been developed which enable important statistics to be compressed into the smallest possible space. You will receive far greater benefits from your City Directory if you familiarize yourself with the symbols and what they stand for.
In checking credit applications, in conducting direct mail advertising programs, in planning sales campaigns, in build- ing prospect lines, and in scores of other ways your City Directory will prove of invaluable assistance.
